to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

Scarlet - how about stop being professionally offended and abusive and get involved with some of your more logical thoughts which back up why you feel that way?

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 21:00

Not very weird for them, very weird that you would say that.

EatDessertFirst · 29/10/2015 21:01

robinofsherwood That prion has clearly failed in its duty of care if Tara is being subject to abuse. End of story.

Two men did attempt to attack the transexual during an exercise period in DPs prison I mentioned. Not only did she/he beat the shit out of the attackers in about 18 seconds, she/he was then moved to a different wing (single cell) for protection before being convicted and moved prisons.

Being of the female gender does not diminish the brute strength/size of the actual physical male. I say again, penis = male prison, with necessary management by prison staff.

ScarletRuby2 · 29/10/2015 21:01

I am not professionally invented. Do you think it would be OK to say 'hitting gay-peak' or hitting 'Muslim-peak? It's discriminatory.

ScarletRuby2 · 29/10/2015 21:01

*professionally offended

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/10/2015 21:02

very weird that you would say that.

Now Im confused. Your friend changed their body, to match their gender, but they weren't unhappy with their original body?

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 21:02

what on earth are you on about scarlet Grin

StrawberrytallCake · 29/10/2015 21:03

Then say that!!! Say you think it's discriminatory and explain why - you can't enlighten people with your thoughts without talking through it!!

Not saying I agree with you - I'm not entirely sure I know what trans-peak means but I think the debate should be open!

StrawberrytallCake · 29/10/2015 21:03

There is an assumption from current trans allies that those of us who don't buy into "trans women are women" and that gender identify trumps biological reality, that we are hideous bigots. Until recently I was an active trans ally, but like so many others (including TW) have reached "peak trans" following issues that throw women under the bus.

Imustgodowntotheseaagain · 29/10/2015 21:04

Any transwoman could be midway through a transition, button, but we're now seeing people who say they identify as women choosing to keep, use and celebrate their penises, i.e they aren't intending to undergo surgical reassignment. I find that difficult to get my head round. If you love your cock, surely you're a man.

Shall. I call myself vile before Scarlet does?

BertrandRussell · 29/10/2015 21:05

Scarlet. Do you think that an inmate in the woman's prison should be forced to share a cell with Tara?

GinandJag · 29/10/2015 21:05

Too much faux indignation from Scarlett. Elaborate on the points and educate us. We are clearly not going to get there by guesswork.

MrsToddsShortcut · 29/10/2015 21:05

I find this an absolute minefield to be honest. On the one hand, if she has been genuinely living as a female for many years (and her physical appearance alone would suggest that she would be in no way safe in a male prison unless she was in isolation permantly) then it would be very traumatic for her to be in a male prison.

Conversely (and this is a very personal viewpoint) if I was forced to share intimate spaces with anyone (identifying as male or female) with a penis whom I did know and trust, I would find it potentially quite traumatising as I was raped when very young. I have residual issues around this stuff so would find it very hard to cope with in some respects. That's not Tara's fault, but it's not mine either. It's why we have 'safe' spaces.

I actually don't think she expected to be jailed from what I've read, although I don't know enough about wat she did.

HermioneWeasley · 29/10/2015 21:06

"peak trans" is the experience of turning off a previous trans ally when the issue or individual in question is so unreasonable or delusional that you say "fuck this for a game of soldiers"

AdjustableWench · 29/10/2015 21:08

'Having a penis' is, in my view, a very strange way of defining 'being a man'.

I'm very much in favour of trans rights, and there is already plenty of legal precedent for dealing with trans men and trans women who are sentenced to prison time, so presumably this case is being handled according to those already-established principles.

I totally agree that it's important for all prisoners to be protected from every kind of bullying and abuse.

StrawberrytallCake · 29/10/2015 21:08

Thanks Hermione, ah it seems peak trans is about where I am too then!

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 21:08

I personally applaud someone that totally trans and would back them all the way. I don't get out of my seat for someone that wants both and then screams about things to benefit themselves if it does go their way.

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 21:08

*doesnt

RickRoll · 29/10/2015 21:11

"Excuse my ignorance. Had a look at her pictures- where exactly is the '7 inch surprise' housed?"

It seems rather visible to me?

A person that feels predominantly like a woman but wants to keep their penis

This, for me, is the big white elephant in the room that nobody seems to talk about.
Why do so many, who want to identify fully as women, opt to keep their penises? Hmm And there seems to be a lot that go so far and then Stop.
If you really want people to view you as a fully functioning female, as opposed to someone who is merely wearing female clothes and has boobs, then why not go the whole hog and have the full reconstruction?

Why hold onto the single most male feature you have? (and lets face it, you can't get more male than a penis)

Could it be that some of them actually still like that part of being a man, but won't admit it?

I think this is what is confusing people.

HermioneWeasley · 29/10/2015 21:12

imust the trans activist argument in that case is because the person identifies as a woman then their penis is a female penis. Because gender identity is reality and biology is a social construct, and if you question what genitals someone has you are literally thinking like a rapist.

I shit you not.

Peak trans anyone?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 29/10/2015 21:12

I can totally see why someone would choose not to go through with surgery. It needn't mean they're not dysphoric about their genitals, just that removing a set of healthy functioning genitals to be replaced with a primitive imitation of the opposite sex's, necessitating a lifetime of medical care, may not seem the best decision.
But they would need to accept this will have implications for how other people will respond to them.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/10/2015 21:13

'Having a penis' is, in my view, a very strange way of defining 'being a man'.

Surely a man is an adult male human? How do you define a man (or woman)?

pinotblush · 29/10/2015 21:13

Its not confusing really is it. They are still predominantly male and should be treated as such.
