to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

How hard is it to accept that an individual is the best expert in what their gender is, and that this is not a choice?

You seem to have a problem distinguishing between biological sex and gender.

Snossidge · 29/10/2015 20:05

attheendoftheday - in that case surely you could argue that why is anyone with a penis a risk to women? Why have sex segregated prisons at all?

RickRoll · 29/10/2015 20:05

"Depending on what stage of transition she is in its likely that her penis is far from "fully functioning"."

That directly contradicts what she advertises on escorting websites, and reports from her clients

" Finally she fucked my ass with her beautiful stiff cock and had me waking the neighbours with my moans"

"Why does her having a penis (while being a woman) put others at risk"

It doesn't. Being a physically large person who has said that she enjoys "surprising" people with her erect penis and who has been convicted of violence against women is likely to put others at risk.

BojackHorseman · 29/10/2015 20:09

Did you just compare Gary Glitter to a transsexual?

saucony · 29/10/2015 20:09

A simple internet search indicates that this woman uses her penis and it is functioning. If you can't work out why that might put women prisoners at risk, then you need to give your head a wobble.

Onthepigsback · 29/10/2015 20:09

This is an awful thread. I'm shocked at so many people saying she should go to a men's prison. Why don't you go to a men's prison as a woman and see what happens to you.

God people have no understanding of transgender issues at all.

DickDewy · 29/10/2015 20:10

She will be separated in the male prison, which is where I think she belongs.

I have no sympathy.

attheendoftheday · 29/10/2015 20:10

Jesus, I actually despair.

No, I don't think possession of a penis makes someone an automatic risk to others.

I am perfectly clear on the difference between sex and gender, thank you.

GuiltyPleasure · 29/10/2015 20:10

Fair enough RickRoll I stand corrected on the functioning of her penis. However, all prisons do a cell share risk assessment so if she's either considered a risk to others or at risk she'll be in a single cell

LibrariesGaveUsP0wer · 29/10/2015 20:11

I think someone with a penis does not belong as an inmate of a women's prison.

It isn't about gender identity to me. It is about biological sex. And that sex is male. If someone has had full surgery that is a bit different and I think exceptions should be made.

saucony · 29/10/2015 20:11

"No, I don't think possession of a penis makes someone an automatic risk to others."

So why can't Mr Smith who 'only' committed insurance fraud and is otherwise, a lovely, kind family man not be in a women's prison?

Snossidge · 29/10/2015 20:12

So why are prisons sex-segregated attheendoftheday?

TiggyD · 29/10/2015 20:13

This is her by the way.

MaudGonneMad · 29/10/2015 20:13

Exactly Libraries.

lavent · 29/10/2015 20:13

Personally I think she should be accommodated in a single cell in a female prison.
I agree it's a controversial issue though and I can see everyone's point of view.
I also agree her profession is not relevant.

attheendoftheday · 29/10/2015 20:13

If she has form for sexually assaulting women then she should be managed in whatever way other women who sexually assault women are managed. They are not taken to male prisons, because that would be pretty inhumane.

HermioneWeasley · 29/10/2015 20:15

attheend so you're in favour of mixed sex prisons, gym showers, hospital wards, DV refuges etc?

You don't think there's any need at all for sex segregated spaces?

And no I don't believe that all men are rapists, but because enough of them are that 1/5 women experience sexual assault, and because women's bodies are fetishised and sexualised by society, we do tend to segregate for reasons of modesty and safety.

I don't give a fuck about someone's "gender identity". I give many fucks about their biological sex when they want to share intimate space with me.

As far as Im concerned you can do what you like. Look as you like too, its a free world.

However, I would not call a person who wants to look like a woman and function like a man "she".

That person belongs in a male prison.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 29/10/2015 20:17

AFAIK prisons are segregated by sex not gender. While the person in question may have a female gender, they are indisputably biologically male.

As a previous poster suggested there may be a case for a fully transitioned person to be in a prison based in their gender rather than their sex. But that is not the case of the person described in the OP.

robinofsherwood · 29/10/2015 20:18

That isn't what is happening though, eatdesert. I've been following her campaign and she is in her own cell and locked up 23 hours a day but she is mixing during the remaining hour and she is being subjected to significant and frightening harassment. It's not just any prison either, it's one known for not doing enough to solve inmate violence.

One instance of common assault does not make her a risk to others in general - although no, it's not great either. Common assault can be, for example, throwing an object at someone and missing. There is nothing to suggest that if allowed into a female prison she would randomly rape or impregnate her female cell-mates. I don't know, but I'm assuming she's into sex with men so it seems altogether unlikely. Possessing a penis and even possessing a penis while not having great self-control does not make you a rapist.

My understanding is that people who are transgender are much more likely than others to turn to prostitution though I don't understand why. But it's obvious that this is already a very vulnerable person and for a minor crime we are allowing her to be subjected to 12 weeks on sexual harassment. It seems completely repellent to me.

Nanny0gg · 29/10/2015 20:19

Please can someone explain to me the difference between sex and gender?

HermioneWeasley · 29/10/2015 20:19

attheend you really think she's a woman in exactly the same way that biological women are? Is that what "woman" means to you - some ethereal concept of "gender identity" quite independent of biological reality?

What about the people who believe they are animals ("Kins" I believe they call themselves) - do you think they should be allowed to live in animal sanctuaries because if you declare you identify as a squirrel there is literally no difference between you and a squirrel?
