to think if you have a penis, you do not belong in a woman's prison

There is to be an appeal tomorrow, at Bristol Crown Court, regarding the decision to send violent criminal Tara Hudson, who works as a transsexual prostitute (still has a penis, as 80% of transsexuals do), to male prison. Tara wants to go to a female prison.

AIBU to think that if you have a penis, you should go to male prison?

People are arguing that Tara is at risk of sexual assault, but Tara is not unique in this - lots of (non transgender) men are vulnerable, and the prison service has a responsibility to protect them.

hamatime - really like that blog.

TheXxed · 05/11/2015 17:10

Hairy I signed the petition, you don't have to display your name.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 05/11/2015 17:37

Hairy, my concerns about starting a new thread are that a) it could be forced into the Petitions section, which I bet is a wasteland, and b) that if there's any chance at all that we're flying under radar at the moment, that would blow it.

CharlieSierra · 05/11/2015 17:38

I've signed it, and passed it on.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 05/11/2015 18:01

I've tweeted it. I'm tweeting my arse off about this atm.

HairyLittleCarrot · 05/11/2015 18:22

Fair point, Empress. I didn't even realise there was a petitions section.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 05/11/2015 18:26

But the more people who sign and share the better! I've tweeted Stonewall to point out that with supporting Tara Hudson & this self-ID shit, they're throwing lesbians under the trans bus. Not hopeful about a reply though. Binned my Stonewall T-shirt. Sad

IamTheWhoreofBabylon · 05/11/2015 18:31

I've signed but, for the first time ever, anonymously

howtorebuild · 05/11/2015 18:39

I can't sign it. I don't think it's fair to punish all transwomen for the behaviour of transactivists. The quieter transwomen may feel as scared of the activists as we do.

SoftDriftedSnow · 05/11/2015 18:55

Signed.

I never understood why the T became part of the whole LGB thing. It makes a bit more sense now the activists are more visible and vocal.

I'm sure the quiet transwomen are intimidated by the activists. They still stand to gain from their demands (and the current acquiescence of society). Just like nonviolent men benefit from the actions of the violent ones who actively maintain the patriarchy.

DoingTheBestICan · 05/11/2015 18:59

I've signed it and I hope everyone else on mumsnet does as well.

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 05/11/2015 19:09

Howto, I don't think any of us are anti-trans people. What we're anti is the activists who want to steamroll over us. They're doing the quiet trans people no favours whatsoever and Stonewall have jumped on their bandwagon. I honestly think conflating gay rights with trans rights is just unhelpful and confusing.

Of course they benefit. Trans activists demands shift the Overton window.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 05/11/2015 20:17

I don't think trans people generally benefit from trans activists. Maybe in the short term, but TAs are becoming ever more ludicrous and trans people are being tarred with the same brush. That doesn't help them, in the long run it sets them back.

TAs do about as much for trans people as MRAs do for the men they claim to care about. IE: fuck all.

PlymouthMaid1 · 05/11/2015 20:17

Voting for male prison here as working man bits makes that very sensible. I also think, regardless of what we are told to think, that transwomen are not and never will be 100% female and also often do not look female either as usually too tall and broad with enormous feet. I am happy to refer to them as female if that is what they want and really do not care what is going on under their frocks but it is relevant in this case.

Enough already.

Kittlekattle · 05/11/2015 20:35

I think quieter trans folks are disadvantaged. I read some of the submissions to the Parliamentary enquiry and noticed that there was a study that amongst other issue found that transmen were the most likely group to avoid going out for fear of finding a bathroom they felt comfortable using. Now I imagine they might not feel comfortable using the womens loos, be at risk using the mens and would benefit from a unisex cubicle arrangement. If all the (usually mtf) transactivists are campaigning to be able to use the female toilets rather than for appropriate unisex cubicles then that doesnt help transmen.
Also, it doesnt help post op transwomen I should think. They probably have a far greater need of an individual cubicle arrangement as gender reassignment surgery renders you permanently incontinent and you have to self catheterise to urinate. I would have thought a bit more space and privacy might be welcomed by them.

Kittlekattle · 05/11/2015 20:49

Apologies - Im not sure if that is true anymore with current techniques. Might be based on old lectures possibly not well remembered about reassignment surgery as I can't find any reference to that when I look now!

HermioneWeasley · 06/11/2015 20:55

I've asked on Sandi Toksvig's guest blog what the WEP's stance on biological women having woman only space is

EmpressKnowsWhereHerTowelIs · 06/11/2015 21:28

Thanks for the idea Hermione. I've posted there too.

CharlieSierra · 06/11/2015 21:33

Me too, good idea Hermione

HermioneWeasley · 06/11/2015 22:01

Thanks all

venusinscorpio · 06/11/2015 23:30

Brian, I found that article horrifying, and more so, as no one is questioning it. It's clearly the unhealthy influence of the internet and parents, and possible advantage being taken by psychiatrists if a child is 3, ffs.

venusinscorpio · 06/11/2015 23:30

Briar, not Brian!
