Dontlaugh can't you understand why that is? fat people do not impress young girls. Young girls do not want to emulate fat people. However they do want to emulate thin people. Anorexia is a serious illness in young girls and celebrities are looked up to.In a way they do have a certain responsibility, they create an image, they know young girls will try to copy that image. They should care about their young fans. It isn't a lot o ask for, they are earning a lot of money, it's all about appearance. They need to show some responsibility imo.

SummerNights1986 · 25/10/2015 00:44

Completely disagree though that she 'must' have got the job because of her looks.

There's no nice way to put this example really, but - have you seen pics of Nicola from GA when they started? I doubt very much she was hired for looks (I feel really mean saying that but it is true). She's drastically improved with age though!

mellowheart · 25/10/2015 00:49

Scarf Simons tweets that she's a good judge are hardly proof she's good. He hired her, he would say that wouldn't he. No I wouldn't say it about Adele, she's has got talent, yes she's overweight but she is where she is because of sheer talent. But apart from that young girls won't decide to go on an eating binge to get to b e her size. It's totally different. Cheryl Cole is now very thin. I don't see why that has to be analysed, it's true. Why deny something just to make the point "well you wouldn't say that about fat people". She is the one under discussion.

bodenbiscuit · 25/10/2015 00:53

I like Cheryl. She is very thin though. There is no getting away from it. People look bigger on TV so imagine how tiny she probably is in RL? And when she was in Girls Aloud she was never that tiny although still slim. Even though I agree with earlier comments about people in the UK being too big generally, there is a whole other extreme in the world of celebs. Cheryl is not the only one. I can understand why it happens when you are being photographed day in, day out whether you like it or not though.

I can't believe the pasting that the OP has got on this thread and anyone who agrees with her! And how rude of some posters to say that the OP isn't a dietician. How on earth do you know that? I agree that Cheryl is way too thin, and her face is scrawny and she looks unwell. She was wearing a white coat in one shot at bootcamp and she looked like a little girl dressed up in her mom's coat.

As for her looks, there are pictures on U Tube of her very first audition and recently one that said "Oh so Cheryl was just a normal looking teenager" and she was - pretty enough but nothing special. I think the work she's had done on her teeth make a lot of difference and of course when we see her she's always made up and hair done by a top stylist etc. I know this is true for all "celebs" - I remember the auditions when GA was formed and they were just pretty but ordinary looking girls. Someone mentioned Nicola and yes she was quite plain I recall. I don't think Cheryl has much of a talent as a singer but clearly others think so because of her success both in GA and as a solo artist. I do like her - I somehow think she is genuine, though I might be naïve but I hope not. She doesn't make any secret she came from a council estate in the NE.

However I think it's a real worry that girls as young as 8 are apparently worrying about their body size. I know being overweight is a problem but anorexia is a serious mental illness and can be fatal. And I think they do look at celebs and think that's the way they should be.

bodenbiscuit · 25/10/2015 01:03

The reason Cheryl is popular is because in the UK we tend to like people who have humility. She comes across very well as a judge and is likeable. She's not in the slightest pretentious.

The thing is, over the last 30 years we've gradually through the media come to accept thinner and thinner celebrities as the ideal. If you look at the pictures of Kate Moss in the 1990s which caused such an outcry over anorexia she looks positively healthy, hale and hearty compared to many models and celebrities today. Ditto many of the pictures of Posh Spice or Nicole Richie back in the day when they caused similar stirs.

I don't think it's right to expect people to keep silent about a media which is desensitising us to accept pictures of women who are clearly thin to the point of ill health as normal and desirable. Not in the name of 'body shaming'.

And it's a bit disingenuous to expect people to pretend that it's just Cole's natural shape and she shouldn't be shamed for just being what she is naturally. We all saw her in her teens and twenties when she was slim but healthy, we all know that for her to end up like this in her 30s is down to more than just genes and nature.

I think all this 'you can't body shame' plays exactly into the hands of a media which spends most of it's time telling grown women they should have the body shapes of girls who are just beginning puberty.

Booyaka · 25/10/2015 01:06

Yeah, Boden, she was really humble when she was punching that toilet attendant in the face.

bodenbiscuit · 25/10/2015 01:08

That was ages ago Booyaka - I'm sure she regrets it!

bodenbiscuit · 25/10/2015 01:09

On your other points though, I agree,

mellowheart · 25/10/2015 01:12

Cheryl Cole humble Grin

mellowheart · 25/10/2015 01:15

And Cheryl isn't successful because she's pretty
I absolutely don't agree.

Cheryl looks too thin.

Megan Trainor is fat.

Tess Halliday is morbidly obese and extremely unattractive.

There, equal opportunist criticism.

None are currently great role models but Cheryl is facially more attractive than the other two.

Crazypetlady · 25/10/2015 01:23

The original post on this thread was body shaming. People shouldn't be body shamed fat or thin. I think Cheryls weight loss is a little worrying. She does not look unattractive though.

There is pressure for girls to be thin but there is also pressure for them to be curvy. As a pp said there are Real men like curves posts. There are also, plenty of posts about thigh gaps. Rather than shaming women like Cheryl the media should be shamed for all the pressure it puts on women to be a certain way.

mellowheart · 25/10/2015 01:47

Well Scarf you tell me why you think she's successful, are you honestly saying she's a very talented singer. Of course there's a lot of much more beautiful than her that aren't successfull, it's all down to lucky breaks. She got lucky with getting in GA, and it's basically carried on from there. If she was a plain looking girl she would have faded into obscurity by now.

thefutureofpolitics · 25/10/2015 01:54

Skinny bashing is ten million times worse than fatty bashing because so many people are fat. It's like the fatties are reaping their terrible revenge. It is coming to something when it is seen as normal to be fat / overweight / obese. I got that sick of getting rubbish for being skinny (naturally thin due to genetics scrawny indie chick) that I put on weight ... I look back on that and I think, why should I have had to do that because of jealous fatties? From experience, skinny bashing is horrendous, and I feel sorry for Cheryl seeing the flack she is getting.

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/10/2015 01:59

12 stone+ is not "real" - it's inviting heart disease, diabetes, and ongoing health issues but hey, let's not fat shame

Bollocks is it. I'm 6ft and just right at 12stone+.

SummerNights1986 · 25/10/2015 01:00

It's should not be seen as 'normal' to be obese. But nor is it normal to be very underweight, nor should it be promoted as such.

SummerNights1986 · 25/10/2015 01:06

I disagree that Meghan Trainor is fat. I feel there is a difference between being overweight and fat (to my mind anyway) and MT is the former.

I'm overweight now and could definitely do with toning up and losing a few pounds. But i'd not say I'm fat.

mellowheart · 25/10/2015 01:19

and I feel sorry for Cheryl seeing the flack she is getting.
I wouldn't feel too sorry for her. She's been in a successful girl band, had success as a solo artist, is now a judge on X factor, and has millions in the bank. She also must get constantly told how beautiful she is, I hardly think she'd worry about a few comments on Mumsnet saying she's gone too thin.
As luck and good fortune goes she's not done too bad for herself.
Is it any wonder some celebs believe in all their own self importance. To be constantly told how wonderful/perfect you are is surely not a good thing.
