Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

Yabu. It's not up to you what other people call their kids. If they don't like it when they get older they can change it.

WorraLiberty · 30/09/2015 21:35

Aaliyah is a very common name here amongst Muslims

I can immediately think of 3 girls with this name.

WorraLiberty · 30/09/2015 21:36

Oops, 4 actually.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 30/09/2015 21:38

I've never met an Aaliyah either. It's not weird to have not met one so I'm not sure why Sparkling was singled out by people when other people have made much worse comments Confused

I work in a large primary school so I'm wondering if we might have an Aaliyah in this years Reception intake. We do, however, have children named after objects and occasions.

Saying no more as it would out me.

SalemSaberhagen · 30/09/2015 21:42

Occasions lilac? I'm intrigued. Christmas, Halloween, Easter?!

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 30/09/2015 21:45

I know an Aliyah she is beautiful not just to look at but in her personality.
I think it's s gorgeous name.

Sunsoo · 30/09/2015 21:45

Nasty thread. This is why Mumsnet is called a nest of vipers.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 21:47

I am sure KJ doesn't give a shiny shite what anyone thinks Sunsoo. Relax.

noeffingidea · 30/09/2015 21:47

There should be a law against people like the OP.
Seriously, WTF has it got to do with you?

SaucyJack · 30/09/2015 21:48

Please tell me it's after Pancake day Lilac.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 21:49

You could say that about half the threads on MN noeff. Grin

Tneconni · 30/09/2015 21:54

FannyFanakapan

Based on how it's spelt, I would automatically go to pronounce Aaliyah as A-liar. It's an unusual name, I don't think Sparkling is particularly sheltered for not having come across it - I never have - it isn't exactly common

dietcokeandwine · 30/09/2015 22:00

I think Aaliyah is really pretty. I think Reign is americanised chavtastic in the extreme, but as others have said I very much doubt KJ will give a shiny shite what anyone else thinks.

Aaliyah Levitas is a bit of a mouthful and the poor child will most likely spend the rest of her life correcting people on how to pronounce it. But then again if KJ had called her Sioned Myfanwy Levitas she'd have spent the rest of her life correcting people on how to pronounce that too.

FabulousFudge · 30/09/2015 22:04

It makes me think of the singer who died in the plane crash.

I thought Katherine Jenkins would give her daughter the poshest name going - Araminta or similar.

DonkeyOaty · 30/09/2015 22:09

Oh. I would prn as Uh Liar too. If I came across in RL I would be guided by parents, sort of wait for them to say the baby's name a few times and mostly coo at the cuteness of babies.

Finallyonboard · 30/09/2015 22:20

YANBU.

HoneyDragon · 30/09/2015 22:22

How is it the humans have been naming small humans stuff for millennia and it's just been that thing that humans do.

Then the web was born and naming babies turns perfectly reasonable people into asshats? Confused

Vixxfacee · 30/09/2015 22:22

Uh Lee yah is Aaliyah

Ar Lee ah is spelt alia

FanOfSpam · 30/09/2015 22:25

Aaliyah is chavtastic. Reign is abysmal. OP, YANBU.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 30/09/2015 22:27

So a name predominantly used by black or muslim people has been described as outlandish and down market on this thread

Pretty par for the course on MN sadly.

Bakeoffcake · 30/09/2015 22:31

Angry "Chavez" "chavtastic"

some very narrow minded provincial people on this thread.

jorahmormont · 30/09/2015 22:36

I was surprised but mostly because I'd thought she would have gone for a Welsh name. Aaliyah is quite pretty, personally I'd go for Alia but to each their own. Reign I'm not quite sure about, isn't Chris Brown's daughter called Reign? But they do sound pretty nice together :)

I'm also more than a little bit relieved that she didn't go for a Welsh name, as I had visions of DD's fairly uncommon Welsh name suddenly having a surge in popularity Blush

Crazypetlady · 30/09/2015 22:37

I really don't see the hate for the name. There are far far worse names. Plus taking the piss of a name used a lot in other cultures and sneering at it makes you pretty shitty. inserts passive agressive Just saying.

wowfudge · 30/09/2015 22:37

There are lots of names either common to Judaism and Islam or with variants - think of Maryam and Miriam.

It's completely unnecessary to have a pop at KJ - none of us know her and I doubt anyone on this thread has even met her so to be slagging her off based on nothing concrete is horrible.
