Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

effing that's true, but let's face it, if nobody ever opined on things that didn't concern them then AIBU wouldn't exist...

Well Callum is a Gaelic name meaning 'dove'

But it doesn't stop many Mumsnetters crying chav

So just because a name is predominantly Jewish or Muslim, that's not going to stop people either if they're that way inclined.

Therefore as much as I think the OP is being a bit of a dick about this newborn baby's name, it doesn't make her racist or anti-Semitic.

noeffingidea · 01/10/2015 00:05

If AIBU depends on taking the piss out of newborn babies names then perhaps it shouldn't exist.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/10/2015 00:06

Loving the frantic backpedalling on this thread.

It's chavvy

No it's ethnic

Well of course it's absolutely lovely then, heaven forbid anyone calls me racist.

WorraLiberty · 01/10/2015 00:09

That's my point

As much as I hate the word 'chavvy', I can't see why something can't be chavvy and ethic.

SniffsandSneezes · 01/10/2015 00:19

If someone, anyone, can find the comment where I said Aaliyah is chavvy I'll give them a fiver. Fuck it, a tenner. Others said that, not me.

But seriously though, a quick google of celebrity baby names brought up these beauts:

Audio Science
Tu (Surname- Morrow)
Jermajesty
Pilot Inspektor
Sage Moonblood
Speck Wildhorse
Kyd
Diva Thin Muffin, Dweezil and Unit (Oh Frank Zappa, the drugs you must've been on...)
And of course the collective Geldof/Hutchence children.

Now I'm sure all these names have some deep significance in Hindi/Ancient Greek/Swahili or whatever but seriously? None of you would have a chuckle or say some of those are daft?

OP posts:
Crazypetlady · 01/10/2015 00:22

There is a difference between those names and the name Aaliyah

TinklyLittleLaugh · 01/10/2015 00:24

My kids all have classic Bible/chairperson of ICI names. But hand on heart I don't give a monkeys what anyone else chooses to name their child. A bit of variety makes the world go round. How boring would it be if everyone had the same taste?

FanOfSpam · 01/10/2015 00:26

I said it was chavtastic. And it is. And it has nothing to do with cultural usage and everything to do with the fact that it begins with double vowels and sounds like 'a liar'.

SniffsandSneezes · 01/10/2015 00:27

Oh my God in heaven how many times do I have to repeat that I wasn't talking about Aaliyah?!

Reign. Nope nope nope.

shadowfax07 · 01/10/2015 01:21

I don't know anyone called Aaliyah, but it sounds nice.

Reign sounds like the registrar panicked, and wrote down the wrong spelling though. Not that I particularly like the spelling Raine, I always wondered if that it was a short form of Lorraine...

I once worked with a lovely (single) Australian lady called Louise, whose surname was Ianna. I always wondered what her parents were thinking. Confused

sproketmx · 01/10/2015 01:36

Callus is scottish too. Tell them to bog off Grin and no I did not know it meant she was destined for greatness. That greatness may be yet to reveal itself, it's certainly not at the recorder anyway. She's been blowing that thing tone deaf all week. Blush [there is no mumsnet icon with fingers in its ears]

sproketmx · 01/10/2015 01:36

*callum

AnotherGirlsParadise · 01/10/2015 01:58

I'm Jewish, with 2 DC who have VERY traditional Hebrew/Israeli names, but I can't say I'm keen on Aaliyah either. It always makes me think of the dead singer.

Reign is awful. Didn't the rapper Li'l Kim name her daughter Royal Reign? It's not an unusual choice, it seems. I also know someone who called her daughter Reign, but pronounces it as 'Regan'.

NinjaLeprechaun · 01/10/2015 02:33

"I was reading an article a couple of weeks ago about an American man called Thomas Johnson (actually not that surname, but something equally everyday-nothing-special), his son Denali and daughter Sequoia."
Denali and Sequoia are both national parks. They're also the tallest mountain in North America and the tallest trees in the world, respectively. And they certainly do make lovely names.

I knew a lovely Zebulon growing up, known as Zeb. He's still lovely, in fact. I always thought it was a fantastic name. The Old Testament is actually full of fantastic names.

BikeRunSki · 01/10/2015 05:46

I know a 7 year old Zebulon whose brothers also have (IMO excellent) Old Testament names. I also went to school with one many years ago, and DS had a baby board book about "Zebulon Zebra". I rather like it, but then I rather like OT names. I don't think it's odd at all. Unusual but not made up/unheard of/ you-neek.

GirlOverboard · 01/10/2015 06:02

'Reign' sounds like a name an American rapper would use for their child, but it's only a middle name and I really don't think it's THAT bad. The only 'Aaliyah' I know is the singer, so for that reason I think it's a beautiful and classy name (I didn't realise it had chavvy associations or that it had become so popular recently).

Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2015 06:19

Why do people care so much about other's opinions re baby names? This is why I don't understand the Baby Names topic. Name the baby whatever you want. Some will like the name some won't.
As I said earlier I doubt KJ cares what anyone thinks.

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 01/10/2015 06:55

Katherine or Katharine should be spelt with a K.

It is Catherine that is the newbie (French) spelling

confusedandemployed · 01/10/2015 06:59

You can take the girl out of Neath...

FanOfSpam · 01/10/2015 08:00

Callus means 'wore white stilettos too much' in Essex.

FanOfSpam · 01/10/2015 08:03

Look, if we are asked to judge the suitability of a baby's name (ie the Baby Names thread) then jolly well judge we will. Stop being a drip.

Mrsjayy · 01/10/2015 08:08

I think its a nice name reign is a bit meh though but its not the worst celeb baby name ive heard

Sparklingbrook · 01/10/2015 08:08

Why would you ask a load of random internet strangers what they thought of your baby name? Confused

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 01/10/2015 08:11

How do you pronounce Aaliyah?
