Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

Ah-lee-ah or Ar-lee-ah

TheSeptemberIssue · 30/09/2015 20:02

I agree. She should have called her Amelia just to avoid any threads like this. Never mind that she'll be the fifth Amelia in her class, just as long as she's got a name that people can spell....

DrSeuss · 30/09/2015 20:03

Teaching in a school with a lot of Muslim children, I would assume a girl named Aaliyah to be Muslim. Reign? No idea.

LadyShirazz · 30/09/2015 20:03

Zebulon is a Biblical name isn't it...?

Aaliyah is not too bad in itself - but "Reign"...? Urgh.

Sallyhasleftthebuilding · 30/09/2015 20:03

Waiting for crapbag to appear ...

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 30/09/2015 20:03

SaucyJack, that was my initial reaction as well. However, none of mine - I thought she was going to be named 'Melody' or 'Aria', shows my lack of imagination Grin. Still think Honey is the 'worst' seleb name I've heard so far this year though.

RiverTam · 30/09/2015 20:04

So basically any name that isn't the 'norm' in middle class white British circles is outlandish now, is itHmm? I take it you don't live in London, or any big city with a diverse population, OP? You'd have kittens at some of the names in DD's class.

sonata1 · 30/09/2015 20:04

Nothing worse then going through all the personalised mugs as a child and not finding your name ! LOL

ShowOfHands · 30/09/2015 20:07

Don't be silly. Nobody would call their daughter Crap Bag.

It's a boys name.

Princess Consuela Banana Hammock is for girls.

GreatFuckability · 30/09/2015 20:07

I have a niece called Aaliyah. Reign is kind of a weird one though.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 20:07

I thought it would be pronounced A-liar or similar.

Ah well as long as KJ is happy I guess.

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 30/09/2015 20:09

Most people Katherine's generation will know how to spell Aaliyah thanks to the singer. Children of the baby's generation won't have a problem with spelling it as it obviously isn't all that unusual.

Reign is a bit daft mind you! People just love a bit of pearl clutching...

SniffsandSneezes · 30/09/2015 20:09

To clarify, I find the Reign element more offensive than Aaliyah, and was just using it as an example of the wider problem.

I do live in London, I think that's part of why I'm so exasperated!

Presumably little Aaliyah will be spending plenty of time in the USA where her name has been solidly top 100 for the last decade. I don't think she'll have trouble finding personalised crap at Disneyland.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 20:12

I would rather my DC had names that people can actually spell. Nothing more annoying than when people insist on guessing or pronouncing it incorrectly.

I have never heard of the name Aaliyah and have never met anyone with the name.

lifesalongsong · 30/09/2015 20:13

Reign Disick/Kardashian in a boy Confused

TinklyLittleLaugh · 30/09/2015 20:16

There is an Aaliyah on Corrie, so hardly obscure.

MagicDucky · 30/09/2015 20:16

YABU. Who died and made you queen names?!

IsadoraQuagmire · 30/09/2015 20:20

Nothing wrong with Zebulon either. It's Grandpa's name in The Waltons (he's my favorite!) :)

lljkk · 30/09/2015 20:20

Alia would be nice, or Aisha. I don't favour highly ornate spelling.

BarbarianMum · 30/09/2015 20:22

Then Sparklingbrook we can assume you don't get out much. Aaliyah is a perfectly normal name, if not as popular amongst the white middle classes as Ellie, Hannah or Isabelle.

katemiddletonsothermum · 30/09/2015 20:23

This morning I was thinking about starting a thread about the most ridiculous names you could dream up for a celebrity baby. Real life has beaten me to it.

Booyaka · 30/09/2015 20:24

Sorry, but that name is almost a caricature of the name Vicky Pollard or Waynetta Slob might give their child.

If somebody in a sitcom was trying to come up with an outlandish name which would indicate that kind of person then Aaliyah Reign would be bang on the money. Poor kid.

AnguaResurgam · 30/09/2015 20:26

I think the Corrie one you might mean is Alya (is that a Muslim version of the same name, though?)

Zebulon, an Old Testament name (yes, one of Joseph's brothers) is only really mentioned really on threads where posters are asking for something different.

AuntieStella · 30/09/2015 20:27

I wonder why they didn't spell the middle name the usual way - Raine
