Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

"So a name predominantly used by black or muslim people has been described as outlandish and down market on this thread"

I don't think the Muslim origin of the name has much to do with the chav factor of it. It's more the type of person who names their kid after a pop singer.

Shakira and Anastasia are perfectly nice names in their own right, but you just....... wouldn't, would you.

SniffsandSneezes · 30/09/2015 22:39

Well this was supposed to be a lighthearted thread... should've made that more obvious.

That said, magicducky I would totally be up for Queen of Names. I'd be awesome at it.

"Oh, so you want to call your son Ptolemy Varicose Neon?? No. GTFO"

Also slagging someone with a popular name (Katherine) off for calling their DC something unusual is weird.

I have a pretty bog standard name, my DCs names are unusual. I did not get the memo that this was verboten

SniffsandSneezes · 30/09/2015 22:42

Jorah he called his poor kid Royalty. UGH.

I think it's more the idea of white people culturally appropriating black or muslim things that is chavvy. It's like boys from Grimsby or Barnsley that try and talk like they're from Jamaica or South Central.

You are not a gangster. You work in a fish gutting factory with your nan.

Prettyinblue · 30/09/2015 22:47

Sniffs I'm sure if you told us your DC names a fair few people would find them dull/faddy/unoriginal/ etc

Thank fuck not all kids are called Oliver or Oliva or Lilly or whatever.

kickassangel · 30/09/2015 22:49

Perhaps you'd like to come to the school I teach at, where several kids have traditional student names, and mock Aaliyah? Maybe turn up at Aaliyah's Bat Mitzvah and tell her that her name should be banned?

There are actually laws against blatant racism, and mocking names traditional to a culture/religion/race falls well within that category.

There is nothing light-hearted about that attitude.

Accept that there is more than one culture in this world, and stop judging others for their lack of white skin/Christian religion.

SniffsandSneezes · 30/09/2015 22:52

People like me are people who think Reign is a verb that means to rule as monarch or hold royal office, and is therefore not a name with which to saddle your poor helpless offspring, unless maybe they're a direct descendant of the Queen, and even then I'd think it was awful. It just screams delusions of grandeur.

I've already said my problem is not with the first name.

And do you think that there is something wrong with it just because you've not heard of it PrivatePike, or are you perhaps open to the idea that, just because something is beyond your experience it's not necessarily weird or derisory (or even unusual)?

I spent the 1970s listening to people squealing about my 'foreign' name. So pleased to see such attitudes alive and well in 2015. Hmm

Backforthis · 30/09/2015 22:56

It's a Hebrew name. Her DH is Jewish.

Holy fuck I've gone from starting a lighthearted thread about ridiculous names (seriously, defend Reign. Go for it) to being racist?!

That escalated quickly.

My DS's names are all taken after their fathers/grandfathers/great grandfathers names, so I don't really care if people think they're dull. My DD has my Grandmothers middle name as her middle name. Her first name is probably what you'd call classic but hasn't been in the top 100 for the last few years.

And, again, my problem is NOT with the name Aaliyah.

I'm clearly way out of touch with popular culture here - someone said upthread that Reign is a Kardashian name - is that like a StarTrek thing? Like Klingons? A name from a galaxy far far away? Confused.

Unreasonablebetty · 30/09/2015 23:05

Can we comment with the most god awful names we've heard?
I met a mates newish girlfriend last week, who told me her friend is a teacher, and for ages in a new class she was reading a child's name la-la... La-la... Is there anyone in this class called La-La?
Girl pipes up and says, I wasn't answering because you didn't say it right. It's la dash la ladashla...

I was also told of a girl called daisy, spelt daysay
I think I'd take Aaliyah reign over them two names anyday

kickassangel · 30/09/2015 23:07

You only amended your comment to the middle name after being told that Aaliyah is Jewish. You also made a bit of a 'thing' about Zebulon, another traditional biblical/Jewish name.

Are you sure you want to use a public forum to spout anti-Semitic comments?

But you think that the Jewish people using those names are the ones who should be stopped.

RebootYourEngine · 30/09/2015 23:08

I quite like it. The name sounds like a performers name.

But then i am biased as my dn is called aaliyah(pronounced ah-lee-a). It has both jewish and muslim connections.

Well if you don't care what people think of what you have called your children than why do you care what she called hers? Oh yes that is right its because its none of your bloody business really, just likes its none of our business what you called your children.

Yes usual, and it wasn't "your mates girlfriend who's a teacher", it was definitely "your mum who's a doctor's receptionist".

RebootYourEngine · 30/09/2015 23:16

Booyaka - what a load of shit.

Aaliyah isnt just a black or muslim name. It is also a jewish name. Are you going to call a jewish person with the name aaliyah a chav because they arent black or muslim.
