Aaliyah Reign?! Seriously?!

SniffsandSneezes · 30/09/2015 19:41

So, Katherine Jenkins, a woman with about as regular and average a name as they come, has called her daughter... Aaliyah Reign.

AIBU to be sick of celebrities (who almost always have utterly ordinary names, Katie Price I'm also looking at you) giving their babies the most godawful names you could think of??

And worst of all, it's spreading to normal people. I occasionally wander over to the baby names thread on MN when I need a laugh and, genuinely, there are people on there suggesting all manner of ridiculous names, including... wait for it... Zebulon.

I mean WTF is that?!

I'm serious, there should be some sort of law against this, these people need to be stopped.

AIBU?

Her child her business so YABU for wanting laws against it and wanting to stop people.

Sparklingbrook · 30/09/2015 20:28

Thanks for that BarbarianMum I get out loads. Confused i have just never met anyone with that name. Sorry about that.

Bluecheese22 · 30/09/2015 20:31

Where I live Aaliyah is the ultimate 'chav' name. Along the lines of Chardonnay!!

wallywobbles · 30/09/2015 20:33

Just for info Zebulon is the French name for Zebedee in the Magic Roundabout so a truly daft name. (The magic roundabout was originally a French 1960's political satire !)

Bakeoffcake · 30/09/2015 20:35

I really like the name Aaliah. In fact I knew one 27 years ago and when I had DD wanted to use it but dh didn't like it. I'm sure it was spelt differently though.

Liomsa · 30/09/2015 20:36

I've certainly come across more than one Zebulon in American fiction, usually elderly men or fairly recent ancestors. There's a Zebulon Valley in a Barbara Kingsolver novel, called after the great-grandfather of one of the characters. It could be the next Elijah or Joshua. It's no odder than Zachariah/Zac.

I don't think Aaliyah is odd at all, though I have met more Muslim Aaliyahs than not. Reign is AWFUL though, and suggests the parents might just think it's a cool and different way of spelling Rain. Which always reminds me of 'Acid' Raine Spencer.

Snossidge · 30/09/2015 20:36

Aaliyah is the usual spelling of the name Sparklingbrook, Alia and Alya are more likely to have to spell their names.

elQuintoConyo · 30/09/2015 20:39

I was reading an article a couple of weeks ago about an American man called Thomas Johnson (actually not that surname, but something equally everyday-nothing-special), his son Denali and daughter Sequoia. I thought they were beautiful names, even if I wouldn't choose them myself. And he had such a Joe Average name. Made me smile.

Aaliyah Reign. Meh. Nothing to write home about.

Carlywurly · 30/09/2015 20:41

I'm now considering changing my name to this for work purposes. It will put me first in our crazy alphabeticised printer queue system.

Perhaps Katherine had this in mind. A name like Zoe would be disastrous in my office.

EnthusiasmDisturbed · 30/09/2015 20:42

Aaliyah is a lovely name I know someone called Aaliyah she really suits the name

my name was considered a stupid foreign name that most mispronounced in the 70's and 80's I love my name and often commented on now how lovely it is

FanFuckingTastic · 30/09/2015 20:43

Aaliyah isn't a weird name, my niece is almost eleven and called that. The combination is a bit weird, I wonder if there are personal reasons?

I know my niece is named after a musician who was meaningful in some way to my brother and his partner, and her middle name is a unisex name that she would have been called had she been a boy.

megletthesecond · 30/09/2015 20:43

It's the Reign part that is unnecessary. Honestly.

screamingarmadillo · 30/09/2015 20:44

Aaliyah is nice enough but Reign just plays into Katherine's delusions of grandeur.

badgergirl82 · 30/09/2015 20:45

Aaliyah Reign - when I saw this thread I thought there was a 'reign' of a pop singer! Grin

They definitely 'do' names differently in the states. Trendy names are posh. Mackenzie and Madison and peyton (for a girl?)

I do have an unusual name and I don't like the fact I can't be anonymous. If I'd signed up to mumsnet with clarey2014 no one would be any the wiser but my real name - I don't really need a surname.

Also mumsnet hates my name Sad but loves it's variant (which I hate!!)

MrsWhirling · 30/09/2015 20:46

I like Aaliyah, I thought it was Arabic. Reign pronouced rain but as in the queen reigns is Kardashian and odd. I dislike KJ. I've always thought of her as massively attention seeking.

DingbatsFur · 30/09/2015 20:54

I met a little Aaliyah on the bus the other day (she had a blanket with her name on it). The mother pronounced it 'ah lie ah' much to the bemusement of two little old ladies.
I was tempted to say 'aww but I bet she always tells the truth'.

DickDewy · 30/09/2015 20:56

Horrid - both names

bettyberry · 30/09/2015 20:58

I know a kadifae. Its not even google-able.

leghoul · 30/09/2015 21:00

Reign is offensive to my sensibilities.

Aaliyah is fine, I know one who is very nice.

ALemonyPea · 30/09/2015 21:03

Aaliyah is fine, nothing wrong with it.

I met a 5 year old Neil the other day, with his friend Vincent. Thought I'd been transported back to the 80s.

FannyFanakapan · 30/09/2015 21:11

I have an Aaliyah - no one can pronounce her name properly.

she pronounces it Ali-a. STress on the first A, pronounced in a short a as in cAt.

We have had:
A-Liar
a-LEY-a
Aaaaah-liya
a-LEE-a

drives her bonkers.

SilverOldie2 · 30/09/2015 21:22

Both names are bloody awful but her choice I guess

Alchemist · 30/09/2015 21:25

ALemoneyyPea I met a newborn recently whose name is Barry.

Vixxfacee · 30/09/2015 21:29

So a name predominantly used by black or muslim people has been described as outlandish and down market on this thread Hmm

SalemSaberhagen · 30/09/2015 21:33

fanny I've known a few people named Aaliyah (as well as the singer) and I've only ever heard of it pronounced a-lee-ah. I always thought the ali-a pronunciation was spelt Alya.
