AIBU about Christmas dinner?

Sorry, it's still Summer but I'm being forced into thinking about this following a discussion last week at a family birthday.

It's our turn to do Christmas on Christmas Day. I would like to do Salmon and beef for the main meat. I don't like turkey. I eat it, but out of politeness, I would never buy it and eat it myself.

When I said that I planned to do something other than turkey, I've been told that we can't. It's got to be turkey. By MIL, both SILs and FIL. And DH (obviously!) doesn't want to upset his whole family, so has said our lovely plan to do a huge fillet of beef and a BBQ whole salmon has to be scrapped.

I obviously want to be a good host and give my guests food they like, but they all eat beef and salmon, they just don't want it for Christmas lunch. AIBU to say, I think they're rude for dictating to me what to cook them for Christmas lunch?

Christmas Day: Turkey
Boxing Day: Salmon/Beef etc.

Hope that helps!

ClashCityRocker · 09/08/2015 10:40

I'd may go for turkey plus beef.

Salmon with roast dinner trimmings is just weird (but I know people do it)

I must admit I would be a bit disappointed with no turkey. I wouldn't be rude enough to say so though!

pictish · 09/08/2015 10:40

I'd serve up the beef as well.

ElizabethSpenser · 09/08/2015 10:41

I hate Turkey. I cook a goose and a ham.
I'm not fond of salmon but would prefer it to turkey. I bloody love rib of beef.
Cook your own menu. Bugger the in laws.

Baddz · 09/08/2015 10:42

Salmon?
On Xmas day? Hmm
I dont eat fish (am allergic to shellfish and dislike most other types) and I don't like beef.
What would I eat if I was your house guest on xmas day?
Sorry, but as a host you should cook what you know your guests like/will eat.
Otherwise, what's the point?
Can't you do Turkey and beef or Turkey and salmon?
You only have to alter one of your choices.
What's the drama, really?

pictish · 09/08/2015 10:42

Agree with salmon with full roast trimmings being odd.
I was out last night so feeling a little delicate this morning - the thought made my innards churn a bit.

nancy75 · 09/08/2015 10:44

Glad I'm not the only one thinking salmon is weird for xmas dinner, surely you can't have it with roast potatoes and gravy?Confused

BlueMoonRising · 09/08/2015 10:44

Baddz - are you ivited to Xmas dinner by the Op?

If not, your likes and dislikes are irrelevant. Having said that, I am sure there will also be stuffing, veg, sauces, potatoes - plenty to eat other than beef and salmon.

Baddz · 09/08/2015 10:45

I just don't get it.
Why do people offer to host and then point blank refuse to cook stuff the guests like?
I've cooked things I wouldn't wedge a door open with

ImperialBlether · 09/08/2015 10:45

I'd give them Turkey Twizzlers!

Baddz · 09/08/2015 10:46

I'm pointing out that their guests might feel the same as I do Hmm lots of people dislike fish. And beef.
A plate of veg and potatoes at Xmas....lovely! Hmm

WorktoLive · 09/08/2015 10:46

She says everyone likes beef and salmon, they are just of the mindset that christmas isn't christmas without turkey.

It sounds like a lot of people are cooking turkey out of a sense of obligation rather than because they actually like it. I know I do - I might do something else this year and see what happens.

Icimoi · 09/08/2015 10:48

The thing is, though, you can have beef and salmon any other time of year - there's nothing particularly Christmassy about them.

InTheBox · 09/08/2015 10:48

I'm with sooty wait another 3 months before making a decision. In the meantime crack open the pims. It's only August.

startagainonmonday · 09/08/2015 10:48

Turkey crown and beef for lunch, poached salmon at the tea time buffet. Sorted!

coconutpie · 09/08/2015 10:48

No turkey at Christmas?

Seriously though, as much as I am Shock at the thoughts of no turkey on Christmas Day, you are the host so go ahead and do the beef and BBq salmon (which sound amazing). If they want turkey, tell them to cook up a turkey crown themselves and bring it with them.

I assume you aren't in the UK with the thoughts of a bbq on Christmas Day?!

Icimoi · 09/08/2015 10:49

Is it worth giving goose a try if you don't like turkey? Still suitably Christmassy.

cherrybakewelltart · 09/08/2015 10:49

I don't eat turkey but I know it's important for my mum and MIL to have turkey at Christmas, so I do Turkey and roast pork. Maybe do Turkey and beef as a compromise?

BlueMoonRising · 09/08/2015 10:49

But the guests don't feel the same as you do - the op has stated that in her first post.

The5DayChicken · 09/08/2015 10:52

My family has always alternated meats for Christmas. The one year I asked why we don't have turkey, DM cooked a crown for boxing day. It was nice while it was warm but the cold leftovers were so extremely dry Sad

Anyway, I'd probably cook a turkey breast and the beef on Christmas day then do the salmon on boxing day with cold cuts, salads, etc.

Scarydinosaurs · 09/08/2015 10:52

Pictish

Salmon as a starter- sorry, should have said that.

Baddz they all eat the food, they just don't want it for Christmas Day, so yours is a non point, as none of my guests are in that position.

We take it in turns so I'd never get to try the alternative Christmas dinner on Christmas Day, unless I do it as a host- which is what I thought I'd do, and when DH mentioned enthusiastically our plan we were quickly squashed.

I think turkey crown is the way forward.

MummaGiles · 09/08/2015 10:54

I do fall on the side of those people who want turkey on Christmas, but I'd never demand it if someone was kind enough to host us.

Oddpet · 09/08/2015 10:54

If it was any other day and guests were trying to dictate the menu, I'd say stick to your guns. But it's Christmas and it's traditional to eat turkey, so I'd go for a beef - turkey compromise.

ClashCityRocker · 09/08/2015 10:54

I'm struggling with salmon and gravy.

I love salmon, but surely there are nicer ways to eat it?

How many are coming? Could you just get a couple of Turkey breasts? With roast beef as well?

SideOrderofChips · 09/08/2015 10:55

Get a turkey crown from m&s pre prepared.
