To ask lady to stop smoking near my newborn and pregnant friend?

pinktrufflechoc · 05/08/2015 15:49

Out for coffee and a friend went in to get them and a woman is smoking. Friend is pregnant and I have a newborn.

I asked her to stop and she was being rude to me and said she'd smoke outside if she wanted!

Do you think I was unreasonable? I think it's horrible ...

On FFS won't be able to fart soon. Shock

TheHouseOnBellSt · 05/08/2015 17:28

I smoke and I do NOT think YABU. I never ever smoke outdoors near other people. I go away...down an alley...under a tree...just not near others. It's rude and lazy not to.

I am about to move house where I will meet my new nephew and I will not let him see me smoke either,. Not once.

sugar21 · 05/08/2015 17:30

Come to think of it I object to being in costalot and the yaddy daddy let's one go

specialsubject · 05/08/2015 17:31

no. Smokers smell - truth. Fag smoke smells - truth.

smoking stinks, but is allowed outside. Like other forms of inconsiderate but legal behaviour (shrieking down phones, wearing perfume that can be smelt feet away, picking noses). Those of us who don't like being near people who do this must move away.

facts don't change just because you don't like them.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 05/08/2015 17:41

People break wind, truth. They eat garlic and other stinky food, fact. They drive big smelly cars, truth. Some don't wash, babies fill nappies up, animals do worse, the world is full of blooming smells, not all nice. Walking down the high street, passing a Greggs, McDonalds and hot dog van all at the same time smells a bit like hot sick. Going into the countryside on a summers day - best keep your windows rolled up! However, only smokers get picked on because they're the 'stinkers'. Ok then. I'm not denying facts, I'm just pointing out you are discriminating against a certain group who are just adding to everyday smells - not exactly a pile a steaming poo in the middle of a rose garden are they?

WorraLiberty · 05/08/2015 17:50

Cringing here at an adult calling them 'stinkers' Grin

It's up there with 'poo poo', 'wee wee' and 'bum bum'.

No! Just no! Grin

noeffingidea · 05/08/2015 17:55

Just walking past Mcdonalds makes me feel sick. I might politely request them to close so that I don't have to smell the stench of grease and disgusting stinky meat.

sugar21 · 05/08/2015 18:03

But noeffin You would make poor little Ronald homeless and I would be obliged to call. SS

cleanindahouse · 05/08/2015 18:24

Specialsubject

Are you 12?

You win the cringe award.

LadyFairfaxSake · 05/08/2015 18:28

@ thatBloody, loving "rudiculous", covers it perfectly. Was it deliberate? Either way it's inspired.

ThatBloodyWoman · 05/08/2015 18:33

Ha! Lady I hadn't noticed I'd done that -but,as it goes I was going to put rude, then changed to ridiculous,so,yep,I suppose I kind of did mean 'rudiculous' Grin

pinktrufflechoc · 05/08/2015 18:47

Normally I'm quite easygoing but I didn't want to smell of smoke as DH has a nose like a bloodhound as well so just reacted more strongly than I would normally have.

goodnessgraciousgouda · 06/08/2015 07:06

I don't mind if we are sat outside and someone is smoking near me, because I can switch my seat around, or move the seat back a bit, and I'm not a precious twat. Even when pregnant funnily enough.

I've only had to move before when both tables on either side of us all lit up with multiple smokers, and it was like an inescapable cloud.

What DOES make me angry is when people light up joints sitting near you in the park, or right to the side of you on the river bank (popular for picnics here).

flanjabelle · 06/08/2015 07:13

You think that's bad op, I took my dd with me to a shopping centre last weekend and popped outside to the nice decking bit by a lake as she was getting frustrated in the buggy. It was packed with smokers, but dd wanted to see the ducks. As she was watching the ducks a woman lit up next to us and tapped her ash all over dd. I didn't say anything, just moved away. Sometimes smokers give themselves a really bad name. It is unfair that all outside space seems fair game now and any consideration seems to have gone out the window. It wasn't a designated smoking area, it was just one of the few outside spaces by this shopping centre.

FarFromAnyRoad · 06/08/2015 07:25

What's with the 'stinkers' thing? Heaven help us - you DO sound about 12. Or like the kind of busy little person who wears 6 pairs of knickers and dusts the toilet roll! Grin

YUDOTHIS · 06/08/2015 07:29

YABU,
If it bothers you THAT much, Just bloody move yourself? Smokers can't sit indoors, can't go through markets etc anymore and in some cities (such as Cardiff) its actually illegal to smoke in bus stops. Where the bloody hell do you expect us to go?!

DoctorDonnaNoble · 06/08/2015 07:54

Theoretically it's illegal to smoke at all bus stops if they have a roof and. 3 sides, just not enforced. Neither is the legislation about distance from entrances, which can get annoying. I hate walking through a cloud of smoke to get in somewhere. It is frustrating that it is sometimes difficult to sit outside but I have noticed some cafés/pubs splitting their outside area into smoking/non-smoking. Grin

RedDaisyRed · 06/08/2015 07:54

I detest smoke and think smokers are really anti social. They don't seem to appreciate that outside we want to breath normal air! My son was out in London this week eating on benches and his friend had to waft away smoke continually. In the end just to be able to eat their food they had to move away. I don't see why the smoker didn't realise how much she was ruining their meal. I just about never come across smokers but when I do it's dreadful. Our painters in the house are smokers but smoke in theory outside although it seems to have crept into the garage and every night I pick up butts outside - why wouldn't a smoker pick those up and put them in a bin? It's really strange.

Anyone only 1 in 4 people smoke now so it is thankfully on the way out.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/08/2015 08:10

See to me it's a massive over reaction to pull a face if a person close to me is having a fag outside.

If it's a rare occurrence of sitting close to a smoker then I fail to see the issue, move if a smoking person pisses you off.

In my opinion the fumes from vehicles on our roads affect children more on a day to day basis than sitting close to an occasional random smoker in an outdoor cafe.

Thatsafunnyface · 06/08/2015 08:29

YANBU smoking is a horrible, pointless habit and it's not fair that those of us who don't smoke have to always just lump it and sit inside. If it's a sunny day I want to be outside at the cafe or pub or whatever.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 06/08/2015 08:34

I think YWBU, because as everyone has pointed out it isn't illegal etc etc. However I would support legislation to ban smoking in ALL public spaces outdoors (like beer gardens, parks, outdoor cafes etc) because it is incredibly unpleasant for everyone and should be discouraged as much as possible, in my view.

OneDayWhenIGrowUp · 06/08/2015 08:35

Oops pressed send. But meant to add that people defending their "right to smoke" always just end up sounding ridiculous to me, because I really can't see why people want to keep doing it.

tobysmum77 · 06/08/2015 08:40

Just because something's not illegal doesn't make it right. So for example in a restaurant/ cafe it is not illegal to let your children scream at the top of their voices. But it is considerate to consider other people in general. So yanbu imo op. Why should non smokers have to sit inside? Confused

noeffingidea · 06/08/2015 08:46

oneday it isn't 'incredibly unpleasant' for everyone. Some people don't actually care either way.
I'm an exsmoker (over 10 years) and couldn't give a monkeys if people are smoking around me in the open air. My son has never smoked (and says he never will) and actually quite likes the smell of cigarettes.

Tryharder · 06/08/2015 08:49

The problem is is the whole of outdoors is now a de facto designated smoking area.

So every outside seat in a cafe is shrouded in a haze of smoke. Why should non smokers have to sit indoors on nice days just to avoid being smoked on.

I'm not bothered about smokers as such having lived with one before but I totally get that it's annoying.

YANBU!
