Why should JKR be the best writer anyway? What on earth has that got to do with it. People die in equal amounts.

cocobean2805 · 22/07/2015 22:33

I am 29 and my sis is 23 and we cry when Dumbledore dies. HP world is amazing and I'd go again in a heartbeat. My DN is 5 and I wouldn't show him any HP past number 3 ( and not without express permission from Mum.)

TBH I've been to HP studio tour twice already with DD in her HP mad phases and I can't remember much beyond the fourth film.

The Prisoner of Azkhaban is the best one anyway.

Because, to borrow from Ursula Le Guin (a rather better writer than JKR!), death is the price we pay for living. For the word to be spoken there has to be silence after. But that's probably a bit airy-fairy for an 8 year old.

UncertainSmile · 22/07/2015 23:15

The DM hates JR, mostly because the Dursleys are such stereotypical DM readers and they don't like the piss take.
Plus JKR seems to be a very nice person who happens to be a leftie. Of course they'll hate her.

dougieroseagain · 22/07/2015 23:21

The DM article shows a house called The Whitehouse in its photos. YOu can only assume its alluding to this as JK's house. Anyway, here are the details on rightmove if you fancy a nosey I'm not a stalker, honest gov

Was JK not a serious contender (my choice too) for mn selected prime minister? Smile

dumbledore goes intothe forest and fetches umbridge back. she is in the hospital wing and then carted of to st mungos. (in the books anyway)

Can't be as bad as letting and eight year old watch Disney? They always kill off a parent in the first ten minutes.

ILovedYouYesterday · 22/07/2015 23:45

I was most annoyed about poor Hedwig. She should have had a long and happy life :(

BertrandRussell · 22/07/2015 23:45

"Oh bless, Bertrand Russell - older daugher (age 17) has been the custodian of the Harry POtter films for several years. She's deemed it appropriate as the Harry Potter police."
That's ok then. Do you let her make all your parenting decisions?

LikeABadSethRogenMovie · 23/07/2015 00:22

I had to stop watching Disney movies when I was pregnant. All those dead parents and orphaned children was far too much for my hormones!

cocobean2805 · 23/07/2015 00:29

Oh lordy, I'd forgotten about Hedwig. Big fat tears of misery.

TryToEngageBrainFirst · 23/07/2015 00:41

I'm incredibly upset that ANYONE would show children the films in place of reading them the books/letting them read the books themselves - the books are so FAR superior to the films. And I think the films are great. The visuals are fantastic, but the pictures she paints in your head are better.
If you're not a reading aloud person, get the audios with Stephen Fry -they're amazing.

The books are spectacular (imo), and that has nothing to do with her writing (carp all you want to about her writing style), but I wish I had her imagination and ideas

She has defined my DDs childhood, so I will not let her go undefended!

And I think she deals with life and death, good and evil, friendship and enemies, childhood going on to adulthood BRILLIANTLY and I love what she's created. She deals with complex issues and the writing of Snape is nothing short of genius (Alan R, if you ask me to, I WILL leave my husband for you!)

Good on her!

PurpleSwirl · 23/07/2015 01:10

Not read rest of thread, sorry. Although Voldmort and Bellatrix die. They're evil.

PurpleSwirl · 23/07/2015 01:12

Stupid t'interweb connection go slow. Should say they're evil.

PurpleSwirl · 23/07/2015 01:15

I used to love Disney as a child. Now as a soft arse grown up I just can't watch any without becoming a blubbering mess.
He's seriously got an agenda against parents, hasn't he?! Ones got to die, somewhere or have some torture or painful thing going on. Sad

Icimoi · 23/07/2015 06:45

I disliked Dobby till I heard the Stephen Fry readings, and there was something about the way he read and the voice he used for Dobby that turned me right round. When he died I had to stop reading, I couldn't see the page for the tears.

Capricorn76 · 23/07/2015 06:50

Can you change the title as it contains a massive spoiler and also say 'contains spoiler in title'.

Not everyone has read them all or watched all of the films. Pretty annoyed actually.

I remember sobbing hysterically over Dumbledore's murder. I couldn't speak for quite some time afterwards. My mum thought something truly dreadful had happened to me.
And when TOotP was released it was leaked that there'd be a major character death, and all the Internet rumours said it'd be Hagrid. I was so relieved when it was Sirius!
But poor, dear Fred! His death hit me the hardest.

Methe · 23/07/2015 07:11
