SAHM/P question? (personal)

waitaminutenow · 22/07/2015 08:56

Going off another thread and because I am extremely nosey...lol
My question is if you are a SAHM (or SAHP)...
How long have you been at home?
How many children do you have and what ages are they?
What does your OH do and what is they're pay (v personal I know!)?
Do you receive wtc ctc and cb?

I don't want this to turn into a bashing thread for or about anyone. It's genuine curiosity of how others live that is all.

I've been a SAHM for 11 years.

2 DC, 19 and 7.

DH works in IT, salary c. £130k.

No benefits.

Pengweng · 22/07/2015 09:56

SAHM for 3 years
Twinks are nearly three
Dh is a Admin type person earning approx £26K
We get some TC (approx £200 a month but this will go to nothing next April) and CB for both the girls.

I will be looking for P/T work once they start Reception 2016. We don't struggle but have no money for extras such as holidays etc.
DHs role is being restructured so by the end of the year should hopefully be earning enough that by the time April rolls around and we get no TC then we should be ok. Then when i start earning it will pay for after school care and maybe a holiday.

ItsNotAsPerfectAsItSeems · 22/07/2015 09:58

I was a sahp until last year. 4 kids, eldest is 12 and I have fluctuated between sah and working p/t since he was born, so 11yrs on and off.

3 boys, 12, 8&3 and a dd,1.
DH was a solicitor but now works for an investment bank in their legal department. He earns around 160k. So combined income around 190k. DH did not really want me to return to work but I had had enough after 11yrs.

No tax credits or CB which is how it should be.

spinnydozers · 22/07/2015 10:04

Kids are 7, 5, 3 and 8 months. Have been a sahm for almost 4 years.

DP had just finished his PhD when I first stopped work and earned 16k. He now earns 36k as a University Lecturer. We don't get benefits other than child benefit and child tax credit. We expect our tax credits to stop at the end of this month.

littlejohnnydory · 22/07/2015 10:21

Ds is Home Educated so expect to be a sahm for another few years although I'd like to work a couple of days a week when baby is a bit older. We struggled hugely financially at one point but since moving to an area where living is cheaper we are ok. We were worse off on 32k in the SE than on 16k in Wales.

Bambambini · 22/07/2015 10:26

Not worked for over 13 years since my first was born. Have 2 children both school age so not little.

Husband is self employed in management consultancy. Earns a lot.

No benefits.

autumnboys · 22/07/2015 10:31

I was at home for nearly 9 years, DC were 8, 6, 2.5 yo when I went back to work very part time.

DH's income went up quite a lot over that time period. We only ever got CB and lost that when they withdrew it from HRT payers.

BumpTheElephant · 22/07/2015 10:32

Sahp for 5 yrs.
2 children
DH is an accountant
We get CTC and CB
I plan on going to uni soon and then into employment after that.

Buddy80 · 22/07/2015 10:40

Fairylea I was reading your post and nodding. Very similar situation myself.

Been a SAHM for 7-years (some working between). Am a carer to a son with severe autism. My yongest starts school in September.

nousernamesleft · 22/07/2015 10:41

Sahm for 8 years. 4 dc (12, 9, 19 month twins), 9yo disabled so I receive carers allowance.
Dh earns approx 13k.
Recieve cb, ctc, wtc, dla for ds, ca.

GlaceCherries · 22/07/2015 10:47

SAHM for almost 13 years (went on maternity leave and haven't returned to work yet)
2 DCs in secondary school
DH works in computing, earns around 80k
No benefits of any kind

Should be tying this thread up with the "how big is your house" thread, lots of data mining could be done! Grin

AdoraBell · 22/07/2015 10:49

Too bloody long
2 DCs verging on 14
DH is a consultant, not the medical kind, and earns various amounts
Just moved back after living over seas so no benefits and don't expect To qualify for any now.

Stars We've just moved from South América. Do you mind if I ask which country you are in? Sorry for your losses Thanks

Missanneshirley · 22/07/2015 10:52

I'm finding it interesting to read the salaries of the partners of the sahps - some much lower than I would have thought - I thought your other half had to be loaded! but as someone said up thread it's just about what your outgoings are isn't it?

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 22/07/2015 11:00

Sahm for nearly 2.5years
Dd is 2.5. 10 weeks pregnant with dc2
Dh earns 45k
We get cb.

wevecomeonholidaybymistake · 22/07/2015 11:01

I was a SAHM for 7 years.
2 DC
DH earns £27k
Get CB but nothing else.

duckydinosaur · 22/07/2015 11:05

SAHM for 4 years, 2 kids (4 and 2). Husband owns his own company and earns 100k. We don't claim child benefit.

StarsInTheNightSky · 22/07/2015 11:10

AdoraBell thank you. We're in Argentina, although we have some investments in Brazil too.

StarsInTheNightSky · 22/07/2015 11:11

Gah, pressed send before finished typing! Where did you move from (being nosey)?

AnnikaHansen · 22/07/2015 11:26

Like a couple of others, I started out as a SAHM 7yrs ago and now I'm a carer to my two autistic DSes, 7 and 4. Also have a 9mth old DS.

My DH is a self employed auto mechanic making around 15k a year. We get HB, CB, CTC, WTC, DLA (high rate care, low rate mobility) and CA.

We live in a small 2bed flat and don't have holidays or nights out or any savings or pensions as we just can't afford them. I used to work in retail and earned about 12k a year so realistically we wouldn't be much better off with me in work, and the childcare would be unsustainable for 2 disabled kids.
