To wonder how many cover ups there are and what we're not being told?

I've never really believed in conspiracy theories and thought people who thought there is any kind of truth in them were a bit odd/strange, but since the whole Jimmy Savile thing Im finding myself wondering more and more about what we're not being told things. Years ago I used to post on another forum and people on there were always hinting that Savile was a pervert and then the moderators would come along and ban people for libel and posts would get removed, but it turns out it was all true.

Now today I've just watched an Australian current affairs show attempting to expose a pedophile ring at the very heart of the British establishment, why aren't the UK media doing this? I feel so disturbed. What aren't we being told?

AIBU to wonder how many cover ups there are actually are? Everything is starting to feel a bit unreal, like one big lie.

Yes, Stuart syvret did go to jail. Here's some of the story here. The comments at the end of ( the very log article) are particularly illuminating.

The mirror appealing for info re child abuse at Angell road care home in Brixton.

Tony Blairs govt was briefed about it before it was halted? A serving minister was implicated.

Children's home boss Michael John Carroll was sentenced to ten years in prison for CSA

Did you know the Freedom of Information Act is under 'review'? Further restricting its scope would cripple the investigations that are uncovering hidden facts.

Worrying Garlick. They give with one hand and take away with another.

UnGoogleable · 25/07/2015 13:24

I would imagine, if they do change the FOI act, that there would be a torrent of FOI requests before they change the law. It would cripple the civil service trying to answer the requests in the statutory time limit.

Someone mentioned Dolphin Square and the CSA at parties there.

Just been reading this article and it's mentioned there

redshoeblueshoe · 25/07/2015 21:23

Garlick - I don't know how I missed that.

howtorebuild · 26/07/2015 13:47

There is an odd DM article today. A Tory MP exposed a Labour MP for recent CSA.

BettyCatKitten · 26/07/2015 14:39

How ironic! He needs to look at his own party.

Garlick · 26/07/2015 15:13

That is an odd story! Since the accuser claims the other man's been arrested for drunk driving - but the accused says he doesn't drink - it looks like this will go pear-shaped either way Confused

In less emotive news, it looks like the Conservatives hid the fact that railway upgrades had already been shelved until after the election. They are trying to withhold the exact timings.

caroldecker · 26/07/2015 15:52

Neither the Titanic or the Olympic were fully insured, so insurance fraud is unlikely.
Many people are married to pedophiles and unaware of thier activities - is it really strange to have the odd dinner party with someone and not know thier sexual preferences?

Verbena37 · 26/07/2015 17:18

A couple of days before the 'Titanic' sailed, the company increased the insurance.

caroldecker · 26/07/2015 17:42

The policy paid out $5m, less an excess of $0.5m and cost of $0.25m, so received $4.25m.

cost to build it was $7.5m.

Loss to White Star line was $3.25m, so half the build costs - not much of a successful insurance scam.

LaVolcan · 26/07/2015 20:17

I thought the scam with the Titanic was that it was a fire in the engine room - so human error/negligence, for which the insurance wouldn't pay out, rather than hitting an iceberg which could be seen as an 'Act of God'?

www.theguardian.com/environment/2015/apr/20/revealed-government-knew-of-farm-poisoning-risk-but-failed-to-act

"Documents show officials knew of danger from chemical mandated for sheep dipping that left hundreds of farmers with debilitating health problems, prompting politicians to call for Hillsborough-style inquiry"

LaVolcan · 26/07/2015 21:00

Wasn't there someone who tried to blow the whistle on organo-phosphates at the time, and was subjected to all sorts of blackmail and suspicious behaviour? I can't find his name now.

Garlick · 26/07/2015 22:01

Kate, the organophosphate article and its comment thread are really frightening! Not least because I can't afford to eat organic. I've been staunchly not worrying about glycophosphates - now I am worried, but can't do anything about it!

John Gummer seems to be quite a piece of work. I'd forgotten about him feeding his daughter a beefburger to "prove" there was no BSE! I bet she feels good about that nowadays.

Garlick · 26/07/2015 23:38

Just seen my error above - I meant glyphosate (weedkiller) which is unrelated to organophosphate (pesticide).

Tuskerfull · 27/07/2015 07:41

Tuskerfull - I agree that there is a lot of sloppy thinking and spurious conclusions all over the internet. I know that peoples knee jerk reactions to Satanism and occult shenanigans is to dismiss it outright but I think it is dangerous to rule it out just because some people are hard of thinking.

Mm, but I think theories presented with zero evidence DO deserve to be ruled out.

Quietattheback · 28/07/2015 15:10

By 'zero evidence', what do you mean?

If you mean the likes of the flat earth brigade who simply have a limited grasp of evidence based reasoning, fair enough. But to dismiss allegations of institutionalised cover ups due to lack of evidence is folly IMO. Of course there would be little/no evidence available if those in charge of investigating are also those perpetrating the crimes., it's kind of the definition of a cover up.

Of course, conclusions can't be jumped to, nor people's guilt decided upon on gossip and speculation but where there are potential victims involved, neither can we close are ears and hearts because they are too powerless to provide us with the evidence needed.
