DAMN THEM, only attending parents evenings. There are many,many parents at my very multicultural school who don't do that. I would be delighted if all my parents came to sodding parents eves. Most of the Muslim parents come. The top offenders for not coming are WBRI. Make of that what you will.

Oh, and I will only be going to parents eve for my DC, when he gets to school - just because my DC goes to school with someone, doesn't mean I necessarily want to socialise with their parents...I'm not a massive joiner inner and I have my own friends...

Well, Kardamyli I must not have integrated either then... During my DDs' primary years I attended precisely one 'school fayre' after school and one weekend event. We never went back because they were frankly awful. I'm so glad mine are at secondary now and there isn't any of that stuff. Where in the rules does it say that parents must participate in this kind of thing to be good members of a community? Okay, so it's the 'done thing' here in the UK - in Holland it mostly isn't and so we don't. Where do we cross the line between integration and forcing our culture on people?

Could be good if some non ethnic minority people adopted some of the more ethnic-y values: valuing and caring more for elderly people, spending more time with extended family, drinking less or no alcohol. I think we can learn a lot from each other.

And its totally sensible that if a lot of people of one or two groups live in an area, they will have shops and places of worship that they need in it. Try buying halal meat in Winchester, a challah loaf in North Allerton or tef in St Andrews, and youd be stuffed.

But to accept no invitations to play or parties in 7 years of school? Seems quite determined not to mix. Perhaps if they'd wanted their children to integrate into UK society they would allow them to participate in harmless activities such as play dates which are considered the norm here? Or perhaps they consciously choose not to let their children integrate more than they have to.
