to give a limited number of religious vetos for school trips

My DS's school is trying to organise a school trip to the far east to encourage the development of new language courses they have put on offer recently.

The person organising quite a complicated trip is being asked by a number of parents about not flying on certain days, not using public transport on those days when away, asking that all food follows religious rules for their children - I feel the organiser will spend more time accommodating this group to the detriment of the trip as a whole.

My memories of trips to the Far East is all about the food because it is so different, seems a shame half the group will miss out but that is their concern I guess.

AIBU to suggest we put a limit to the number of restrictions? (slightly tongue in cheek here Smile) but would be interested if any other parents have encountered anything similar?

Maybe the atheists should get some protection from too many restrictions foisted upon them.

why156 - I think that most other large religions differ from the "God's chosen people" thing in that they are proselytizing and encourage other to join their religion, though my knowledge is probably limited to Abrahmic religions. Christianity and Islam both "think they are right" and would like other to become Christians/Muslims. In contrast Judaism "thinks it is right" but doesn't seek to convert non-Jews. Apparently the Jewish requirements for non-Jews is to follow the 7 laws of Noah and also to know God and this is sufficient to get the same treatment after death as Jews (though there doesn't seem to be a clear picture of what happens after death).

This may have been answered already so appologies ( I have tried to read most of the thread).

It has. Always puzzled me as to the treTment of Jews by the Nazis.

I always thought being Jewish was a religion, so found it odd that anyone would bepunished for their relatives religion.

Sorry if I'm not making myself clear.

Let's say I am Catholic, my dh is atheist. My mil is c of e, my fil is Jewiish.

How on earth can anyone say what religion my dcs are.

So in other words in this senario no one knows what my dcs are.

Did Hitler himself believe that Judaism is a race?

Mygardenistoobig · 14/07/2015 22:40

Btw I know that being Jewish was just one of the scapegoats for the genocide.

OurDearLeader · 14/07/2015 22:47

Yes Hitler believed they were a race. Most Jewish people believe they are a race to one extent or another.

Catholics and C of E judge membership on what your beliefs are and if you have been through certain ceremonies.

Judaism has a lot more to do with inheriting the faith from your family. As I said earlier the traditional way of being Jewish is that your mother is Jewish and it's passed through the female line. It's not simply a decision to believe, it's descent to many Jewish people, particularly the more Orthodox ones.

And there is quite a lot of genetic research which backs up that Jewish people are mainly descended from ancient Israelites and do not reflect the ethnic make up of the natives of the countries they live in to anything like you would expect considering that they have often been out of Israel for 1300 years.

Thank you ourdearleader.

This has become an interesting thread.

I think pico2 has summed it up very well. Because Jews don't think you need to be Jewish to obtain salvation (whatever that means), we don't encourage conversion. If you're not Jewish And decide to have a bacon fry up, that's not an issue. But if you converted to Judaism, it would be. So if anything becoming Jewish means a whole new set of rules to keep, and people should know what they are letting themselves in for. It's nothing to do with the "chosen people" concept.

manicinsomniac · 14/07/2015 23:19

I don't think so why156 - I'm a Christian and I still believe that the Jews are God's chosen people - it says so in the Bible.

What an interesting thread this has become - place marking for further discussion

"This is like playing chess with a pigeon. However well you play the pigeon is still going to shit all over the board and then strut around like it won the game."

Very accurate in terms of certain people on this thread.

"I don't think so why156 - I'm a Christian and I still believe that the Jews are God's chosen people - it says so in the Bible."

the bible says a lot of stuff. Most of it untrue, unprovable, contradictory and just general nonsense. plus some songs, poems and some stories.

you can't use the bible as any sort of reference in an argument. wikipedia is notoriously unreliable but still better than any religious book
