The biggest issue with the CoD games is not the gore (which, as you say, can be turned off) it's the manipulation of the player to do things, horrible things, which they know are morally wrong in order to progress in the game.

In one game all the women and children in a village have to be rounded up into a hall and killed by the player. In another, the player walks through a crowded airport spraying bullets at fleeing civilians in (including a pregnant woman) and mowing them down. In black ops, they torture someone to get information out of them by breaking a window, putting the broken glass in their mouth and then punching them in the face, whilst demanding answers.

If a 12 year old is playing this it severely warps their sense of right and wrong and leaves them feeling cross with themselves for enjoying doing something they know is evil. That's why after long sessions of play kids seem to be aggressive, fractious and difficult.

I hate those games and I don't see any value in playing them at all.
If he has to play that sort of game look at assassins creed. It's not great but at least it has a few redeeming features and you only kill the bad guys.
