To think that if you don't have the appropriate bra don't wear the dress?

Out and about yesterday I saw so many women with their bras on show - and not a bra strap peeping out on a shoulder, the whole bloody thing in some cases. Strapless tops with strapped bras, backless dresses with bra straps going across the middle of the back, halter necks with strapped bras, you name it, it was all on show - and in many cases there were combinations of low back, halter straps and a normal bloody bra. This wasn't confined to the young either - so I don't think it was some kind of fashion thing [old gimme emoticon]

It's underwear isn't it? Meaning it goes under the clothes? There are halter neck bras, strapless bras, backless bras etc so it's not like its impossible. I appreciate some dresses/tops aren't designed to be worn with any kind of bra so either go without or don't buy the dress or top! I've put many an item back when I've realised I won't be able to wear sufficient scaffolding support with it.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to dress so your bra isn't totally on show?

I'm quite excited at the statement Primark do bras in all sizes - I'll nip along for a 36j will I?

Grin

The other day, I walked into a shop that claimed had cups up to E. Of course not even in a 32, and they didn't have a 30. :)
I explained to the puzzled assistant all about the bra I was wearing, after she claimed it didn't exist. She ended up asking me where I bought it, as I noticed she was probably the same back size as me, and her bra was quite up her back (she was a size 6 or 8...)

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 16:53

I would be thrilled to see someone with a mouldy grey bra on full show in a backless dress on the school run doing it because she felt like it. The looks on the other parents and carer's faces would be priceless.

I am coming round to this. It would add to the gaiety of nations.

Lweji · 06/07/2015 16:54

I definitely wouldn't follow SJP's choice of clothes. :)

MaidOfStars · 06/07/2015 16:55

Because you feel like it

Well, ne'er the twain, I guess. A backless dress should be worn, well, backless, otherwise what's the point? Just buy a non backless dress.

You wear what you feel like, but I reserve the right to think it looks ridiculous (IMO, of course). I'm not going to rail at or insult anyone who does this, I just don't think it looks good. I'm also not expecting anyone to care what I think, just to preempt your next volley.

I'm not completely adverse to underwear showing. Layered vests and bright coloured bras can look fab.

(BTW, the descriptions of dress styles was somewhat romanticised)

MaidOfStars · 06/07/2015 16:57

Beat me to it. Those pictures are dreadful. Get some cups sewn in, woman.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 06/07/2015 17:07

You can think what you like about how it looks, totally your right. But you really need to stop telling other women what to do.

A backless dress should be worn however the wearer wants to wear it. And the point is mind your own business.

A lot of people on this thread can't seem to see the distinction between what they like and find attractive and what everyone else should be doing. Why on earth should anyone care what you find attractive, let alone change their behaviour based on that?

WilburIsSomePig · 06/07/2015 17:19

God do people really care about this stuff?

I don't show my bra straps but I couldn't give a rats arse if someone else does.

MaidOfStars · 06/07/2015 17:21

But you really need to stop telling other women what to do

Where did I do that? Except to suggest that SJP have some cups sewn into her dress.

In fact, I distinctly said:

You wear what you feel like, but I reserve the right to think...
I'm not going to rail at or insult anyone who does this, I just don't think...
I'm also not expecting anyone to care what I think...

Why on earth should anyone care what you find attractive, let alone change their behaviour based on that?

It's a thread on an internet discussion forum. I think you need some perspective.

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 17:21

Winter, it is possible to express an opinion that it is an unattractive look without actually telling women what to do. It is not mutually exclusive. I hope that is not too fine a point for you.

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 17:23

Winter: "Why on earth should anyone care what you find attractive, let alone change their behaviour based on that?"

This is precisely the point. Nobody cares what I think nor do I expect anyone to change their behaviour based on my opinion. What does it bother you so much that others find the look quite shit.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 06/07/2015 17:35

Except lots of posts ARE telling people what to do, including you, Maid. I'm not reading things that aren't there!

"Just buy a non-backless dress, they shouldn't wear them, look for a matching bra, buy better bras, Want to wear a strapless top but have no strapless bra? Wear something else until you go buy the appropriate bra, it's that simple, Buy a vest top and put a bra under it, Clear detachable straps, just a couple of quid on ebay, wear your bra with any neckline...sorted"

These are all DIRECT quotes from this thread, so lets not pretend its just about private opinions. And thats before we start talking about the comments that tell women that if they aren't conforming to this standard they have a lack of self respect, look grubby, trashy, disgusting, irritating, and worse.

I don't care what you or anyone thinks about it. I do care that we haven't moved on a bit from telling other women what they should wear, or from judging their characters from their clothes.

lastuseraccount123 · 06/07/2015 17:44

anyone else seriously tempted to post a pic of their bra strap in an outfit, just cos?

Smile
goodasitgets · 06/07/2015 17:45

Trying to find a dress that doesn't show any of my bra is a nightmare
Halter neck, strapless, backless, strappy - all ruled out. Day dresses aren't as hard but night out ones aren't easy to find

LegoComplex · 06/07/2015 17:45

Yabu, aint nobody got time for bra selectiveness every day of summer! not me anyway its hard enough getting out of the door!

LegoComplex · 06/07/2015 17:46

and i always wear racing back vests with a normal feeding bra... so have that!

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 17:47

ok, winter. I still think you are projecting massively but I recognise there is a lot more going on with you in the background that is working you up.

lastuseraccount123 · 06/07/2015 17:49

you're welcome. I love the way the pink contrasts with the green. Grin

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 17:52

good: "Halter neck, strapless, backless, strappy".

There seems to be a lot of TOWIE influenced fashion in the high street which looks good on paper (or hanger) but really needs proper underwear or none at all to work in practice. I learnt from hard experience that those same items will be left lying in my wardrobe because I would have to choose between exposing my underwear or losing my modesty.

goodasitgets · 06/07/2015 17:54

Yep exactly. I can't go braless and strapless and halter neck bras don't exist in my size

MamaLazarou · 06/07/2015 18:09

Primark don't make my size bra Sad

morelikeguidelines · 06/07/2015 18:10

Yabu.

It may not look good, but there is no law against not looking good.

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 18:32

Yes, only the fashion police cares.

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 06/07/2015 18:48

Nice armchair psychology blueshoes, but wrong. And I'm not sure how c&p'ing direct quotes constitutes projecting of any kind, but whatever.

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 18:50

Winter, you are quite blinded.

FujimotosElixir · 06/07/2015 18:53

im a 40F and only just got a decent strapless bra that wasn't a small fortune
