To think that if you don't have the appropriate bra don't wear the dress?

Out and about yesterday I saw so many women with their bras on show - and not a bra strap peeping out on a shoulder, the whole bloody thing in some cases. Strapless tops with strapped bras, backless dresses with bra straps going across the middle of the back, halter necks with strapped bras, you name it, it was all on show - and in many cases there were combinations of low back, halter straps and a normal bloody bra. This wasn't confined to the young either - so I don't think it was some kind of fashion thing [old gimme emoticon]

It's underwear isn't it? Meaning it goes under the clothes? There are halter neck bras, strapless bras, backless bras etc so it's not like its impossible. I appreciate some dresses/tops aren't designed to be worn with any kind of bra so either go without or don't buy the dress or top! I've put many an item back when I've realised I won't be able to wear sufficient scaffolding support with it.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to dress so your bra isn't totally on show?

Freya strapless 28F.

i've haven't had a good experience with strapless bras (H cup here). today i'm wearing a top with a cross over back and a lacey white bra with normal lacey whtie bra straps underneath. i look awesome.

AyMamita · 05/07/2015 21:51

YANBU OP. So many women look a right state at this time of year and it seems to be a peculiarly British problem - you would NEVER see a French or Italian woman in a strapless top with a full-coverage strappy bra underneath.

I have always wondered what goes through these women's minds when (if) they look in the mirror before leaving the house. Based on the responses here, it seems to be "fuck it, I don't care" rather than "this works! I look great!". Somehow that makes it even more depressing. It's possible to be comfortable and look good, even with huge boobs, even in hot weather - just take a bit of pride in your appearance!

ThisTimeIAmMagic · 05/07/2015 22:15

YANBU but I wish I didn't feel this way. I have monstrous norks and my horror of greying bra straps means that there are lots of tops and dresses I simply can't wear. I tried on a beautiful dress a few days ago but it needed me to wear no bra at all and my boobs were racing towards my stomach Sad

bikeandrun · 05/07/2015 22:18

What is depressing about fuck it I don't care? Could be seen as liberating. Sometimes I care and wear make up, nice clothes, high heels but also sometimes I get up grab some old shorts and a reasonably clean t shirt( sniff test!) and head out to go to the park, walk the dog, ride my bike, do the school run without a second thought to my bra straps, sometimes I cant even be arsed to put one on at all.

SnapesCapes · 05/07/2015 22:21

Surely life is too short to spend it staring at everyone in the street and giving a shit about their bras?

Sarah Jessica Parker spent most of the time on SATC with bras showing in one way or another, nobody told her to sort out her shitey under crackers. I don't wear strapless tops because I have broad shoulders, and combined with long blonde hair I look like Dog the Bounty Hunter if I go strapless. But if others want to go for it, long live the bra straps showing.

lastuseraccount123 · 05/07/2015 22:29

for those of you with greying bra straps - try soaking them in some oxygen bleach and water. baking soda helps too.

blueshoes · 05/07/2015 23:23

OP, YANBU. It is not a good look and I judge.

GobblersKnob · 05/07/2015 23:38

There is an enormous difference between; 'fuck it, I don't care' and 'fuck it, I don't care what you think '.

Think that's what might be confusing you ;) am perfectly happy in both my skin and my clothes - that I choose to wear, I just have no desire to pander to conformity, life is a billion times too short.

Oldraver · 06/07/2015 00:39

I've mailnly stopped wearing bras as they irritate the fuck out of me. Oh you would probably judge

kali110 · 06/07/2015 00:49

Grin yes gobbler

TriJo · 06/07/2015 00:51

I don't wear clothing that I don't have an appropriate bra for - I just don't find the bra strap sticking out look particularly attractive.

olgaga · 06/07/2015 00:52

Yes I have to say I find all the bras & crop tops on show under clothes awful. Why? Just why?

Mind you my generation used tiny gold safety pins to anchor our "vest" top straps to the bra strap. In the days when ALL bras were grey/blue Grin .

StrawberryMouse · 06/07/2015 01:09

I try. Blush

I'm an 32F and after two babies very much rely on my bra but apart from that still have a nice figure which I like to dress for esp in the summer.

Would dearly love to be able to wear one of those backless or deep v-cut dresses for example but I know they are just not for me. I cannot go braless and those little sticky cup contraptions would do worse than nothing so I stay away from anything I can't wear a normal bra / halterneck bikini top underneath.

I often have black straps on show under vest tops etc though despite constant adjustments. It's rare I find a bra that does anything for me so when I do, I can't be too fussy.

StrawberryMouse · 06/07/2015 01:09

Olgaga top tip there, I'm going to try that.

Also, with detachable straps, you can buy different strap colours that are less noticeable peaking out of the clothes.
I have nude, blue and dark pink that I use according to the clothes.

Lweji · 06/07/2015 06:50

Also, with the correct back size, you can wear quite a deep back (almost to the middle) before it shows a bra at the back.
I have a dress with a large hole at the top of the back that doesn't show any bra at all.

My main problem are arm openings, because most clothes aren't made for breasts larger than a B cup in that size.

Twowrongsdontmakearight · 06/07/2015 08:27

OP. I also think it looks hideous. Certainly wouldn't do it myself. It's a bit like buying some Jimmy Choo strappy sandals but, as they're not really comfy and might rub a bit, wearing socks with them. Spoils how they're meant to look but heigh-ho people can choose to wear what they want. They might feel they look great.

IMO both looks are preferable to the low-rise-jeans-with-stomach-hanging-over look that we still see lots of up here!

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 09:07

Yes, they are all just crimes against fashion.

LashesandLipstick · 06/07/2015 09:49

Lewji not true about correct size. I have a really short torso and high set boobs, doesn't take much for me to be able to lean over and see my bra back. If you don't have this problem great but loads of petite women do.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 06/07/2015 11:04

I wear things and deliberately put my bra on show, I could search high and low but would be unable to find a fuck to give that others might judge me for it.

I think I am in love with you.

Sazzle41 · 06/07/2015 11:05

It IS a fashion thing tho, well it definitely is in London, for daytime 'casual' these days. Why does it matter if its clean and a nice colour? Better supported with visible pretty bra than unfettered and drooping!

blueshoes · 06/07/2015 11:12

It's visual pollution.
