To think that if you don't have the appropriate bra don't wear the dress?

Out and about yesterday I saw so many women with their bras on show - and not a bra strap peeping out on a shoulder, the whole bloody thing in some cases. Strapless tops with strapped bras, backless dresses with bra straps going across the middle of the back, halter necks with strapped bras, you name it, it was all on show - and in many cases there were combinations of low back, halter straps and a normal bloody bra. This wasn't confined to the young either - so I don't think it was some kind of fashion thing [old gimme emoticon]

It's underwear isn't it? Meaning it goes under the clothes? There are halter neck bras, strapless bras, backless bras etc so it's not like its impossible. I appreciate some dresses/tops aren't designed to be worn with any kind of bra so either go without or don't buy the dress or top! I've put many an item back when I've realised I won't be able to wear sufficient scaffolding support with it.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to dress so your bra isn't totally on show?

am I supposed to now check all clothes items so they pass the VPL test?!

You can do what you bloody like. But knowing that no VPL looks better than with VPL. That is all.

Lweji · 08/07/2015 18:53

I don't wear thongs.

I avoid VPL (although probably not all the time) by one or a combination of:
not wearing very tight dresses or trousers (definitely not leggings).
wearing larger knickers (and not too tight)
wearing blouses over my bum

Not that I'm too bothered about it, actually. But if I am going out and I am making an effort to look good, then I'll make sure it's not an obvious thing. The same with bras and bra straps.

Weebirdie · 08/07/2015 19:45

wee of course it's usually very obvious hence my point actual VPL must be quite rare to see, yes?!

Full length mirrors definitely appear to be rare. But VPL? No.

LassUnparalleled · 08/07/2015 20:00

It's a bit like wearing shorts with leggings underneath. Oh wait

Shorts with opaque tights and ballet pumps are fine are they not? My son's girlfriend often wears that combination. You get to show off nice legs and keep warm at the same time.

chelseabuns2013 · 09/07/2015 16:28

The ultimate crime has to be those leggings (tights better describes them) and a pink thing. Witnessed on many occasions and not always the skinniest of girls.

Tyxiaa · 09/07/2015 20:43

Clothing is a social construct with no necessity other than to keep us warm and comfortable. We shouldn't give a single hoot about how it looks or how other people use it. Frankly I think it's ridiculous that we can't get our boobs out in the sun like the lads.

SuperFlyHigh · 10/07/2015 09:26

Lweji and wee I have checked and no no VPL here!

I never wear anything clingy and what you wrote below seems to be fine and all women should adhere to it in some form (but they don't), if I do wear leggings I do cover the camel toe/butt area and I wear knickers that fit...

  • avoid VPL (although probably not all the time) by one or a combination of: not wearing very tight dresses or trousers (definitely not leggings). wearing larger knickers (and not too tight) wearing blouses over my bum*

yes I know I can do what I bloody like but my original beef was with other women (smaller boobs or endless time/money etc) to source different undergarments.

I don't know if you realise but my back size 28 really but have to resort to a 30 sometimes is quite rare, 26 even more rare, add to that large boobs (which don't look as big as they are (FF/G) and you have a conundrum.

I only just found last week through googling a company in UK I think who make 26 band bras and another one that makes bras (more expensive) in my size.

Like I said before I'll try to adhere where possible to the haters rules re not showing (yes I don't like and can't wear vests which show side bra so I don't wear that or have a black bandeau top to go with them (must get a nude bandeau) but a nicely contrasting bra looks nice.

And apart from my jumpsuit I rarely wear straps showing.

The women I know who do horrors of horrors occasionally show a strap don't like that it shows and we talk about it (eg Bravissimo or Rigby and Peller for which size as I know a K or L sized woman) BUT as I said before it's time getting to them and also they're not cheap.

But thank you so much for roundly criticising all the women who do stray. The OP I think did get my original points.

La Senza used to be good for bra converters and bigger size bras until they went bust or their owner Theo Pap..... opened Boux Avenue (HQ in my old work town Wimbledon) now the only Boux I know offhand is in West End or Westfield whereas you used to get a few La Senzas in each town/shopping centre.

Selection of Bravissimo bras available in 28g, beginning at £19. Fyi.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 10/07/2015 09:47

Ah the link doesn't go straight to the page I copied, but if you put 28g in the search box they come up.

SuperFlyHigh · 11/07/2015 07:56

shotgun I've got s strapless Freya deco I think it is but no way is it comfy to wear all day.

I will try the wonderbra one as that seems more comfy.

Also sometimes it is not about the bra but the bra style. My best styles are balconette or Demi balconette! Hell I'd love a tshirt or full coverage bra but they really don't work for me and that's according to bravissimo too!

SuperFlyHigh · 11/07/2015 08:01

shotgun since I last bought my strapless bra they've brought out a few more a Curvy Kate one and another one. Reviews seem good so will try so thank you for looking for me! Smile Flowers

Lweji · 11/07/2015 08:06

Superfly, you may have missed the part where I only really give a damn for myself when I need to look good or for a more formal occasion.
I've been known to misjudge and outfit and show more than I'd want.

It does make me a bit sad that some women wear clothes so tight that all the bumps are showing, but I don't know if that's because they think they look skinnier, have just grown out of previous better fitting clothes or can't find their sizes.
A bit of strap here or there is perfectly acceptable in day to day situations.

ShotgunNotDoingThePans · 11/07/2015 09:13

My pleasure Superfly - always happy to help the fellow well-endowed!

Mumadom321 · 11/07/2015 09:29

I don't mind bra straps showing what does it matter , yes if you can wear the right bra with the right outfit but it's not law
What I do hate is to see a black bra under light coloured tops and you can see it ,HATE HATE HATE IT ????????????????????????

grapejuicerocks · 11/07/2015 10:43

Pretty coloured bras showing, even proper white, white ones, not my cup of tea but I'm not bothered if I see them.

Dirty, grey ones yuk. Yes I judge. If you haven't got a nice one, don't expose it. Money should not be an issue. I don't have those types of clothes in my wardrobe because I don't buy them. Money, or lack of money won't change that.

TelephoneIgnoringMachine · 11/07/2015 10:53

I don't suppose Primark sell 28E?

SuperFlyHigh · 11/07/2015 11:03

Telephone as far as know no Primark don't sell 28E. M&S are 'supposed' to sell 28 bands in larger cups but never seen them.

it's mostly bravissimo, Boux Avenue, R&P etc for us - Debs gorgeous are great though and more budget.

Why should Summer dresses only be available to those who can afford a wide variety of bras or have small pert breasts that don't require support?

I'm 34FF and I have summer dresses, there are lots of different kinds available, they don't have to be strapless to be cool and comfortable. If anything I see many women in strapless sundresses who look anything but comfortable, seeing as boiled lobster isn't a good image.

I'm another one who just can't see the point of buying a strapless dress and then wearing a bra with it. You are still getting white marks in your tan if that's the issue, so where's the advantage in having the dress?
