To think that if you don't have the appropriate bra don't wear the dress?

Out and about yesterday I saw so many women with their bras on show - and not a bra strap peeping out on a shoulder, the whole bloody thing in some cases. Strapless tops with strapped bras, backless dresses with bra straps going across the middle of the back, halter necks with strapped bras, you name it, it was all on show - and in many cases there were combinations of low back, halter straps and a normal bloody bra. This wasn't confined to the young either - so I don't think it was some kind of fashion thing [old gimme emoticon]

It's underwear isn't it? Meaning it goes under the clothes? There are halter neck bras, strapless bras, backless bras etc so it's not like its impossible. I appreciate some dresses/tops aren't designed to be worn with any kind of bra so either go without or don't buy the dress or top! I've put many an item back when I've realised I won't be able to wear sufficient scaffolding support with it.

AIBU to think it's not that hard to dress so your bra isn't totally on show?

Bodicea I usually go by that too. But being pregnant has given me a lot of sympathy for "comfy dressing". SPD doesn't lend itself to my normal heels and dresses sadly.

Plus I haven't had to buy any mat clothes, I have 6 weeks left and I refuse to buy any now lol!

sebsmummy1 · 05/07/2015 08:10

Why should Summer dresses only be available to those who can afford a wide variety of bras or have small pert breasts that don't require support?

I spent my twenties dressed to please people like you. Swathed in dark clothes that covered any wobbly bits, making sure my ugly bra straps were covered as I was embarrassed I could afford any new prettier bras that crossed over or had invisible straps. Nowadays I can afford to dress better but I love seeing people who just embrace life without a care for other's sensibilities. God I wish id spent my formative years not giving a shit about miserable cows and their own hang ups about other peoples preferences.

Yabvu

My bra size is 32J. I've recently lost weight, used to be 36L! I weigh 10 stone 11. A proper bra to support me properly costs £36. There is no way I could afford an array of bras in different styles, just onthe off .chance we will have a scorching day and I might need to wear a racer style vest. So yesterday I wore a play suit in that style withmy usual bra. The world didn't end.

daisychain01 · 05/07/2015 08:10

There is a much better selection of bras in rainbow colours nowadays. And leisure clothing seems to be cut so that a bra can be like a crop rather than the old type that were meant to be hidden.

That said, for work I make sure I wear a nude colour bra and don't wear it on show. It can spoilt the look of a nice outfit.

In the very hot weather it's better to be comfortable than have to worry if a bit of bra is showing

What other people do, is neither here nor there to me, but I agree that nowadays it is a point of fashion that is almost obsolete

Wotsitsareafterme · 05/07/2015 08:11

Yanbu it looks rank

Dowser · 05/07/2015 08:12

It baffles me too. I can understand sometimes a bit of fabric pokes out. No matter how much I adjusted my sundress with shoulders I often looked down at a bit of coral bra showing at the arm holes.

However I'm completely baffled that you would wear a strapless jumpsuit with a bra.

People can wear what they want . I do but I do find it strange to see a backless top with a bra on show . I'll have to look out for the strapless jumpsuit with bra straps ;-)

Ilovewheelychairs · 05/07/2015 08:13

Have never yet found a strapless or multiway bra that gives sufficient support to my H cups breasts- one wear and I might as well let the dog ears go without! I am also quite a large lady so bikinis are out. Each of my industrially scaffolded bras costs me about £35/ £40. I try and hide the bra straps where I can by covering with a shrug etc, but to be honest, I suspect you'd be more offended by my spaniels ears appearing out of the bottom of my top than by a bit of bra on show. YABU. You don't have to have your bra straps on show but it's absolutely none of your business what I do with mine!

Superexcited · 05/07/2015 08:22

I tend not buy clothes that I can't wear a concealed bra with because I think that bras are underwear and belong underneath my clothes. However my husband has bought me dresses and tops in the past that have been strapless or low back etc so I bought a convertible bra that has clear straps and diamanté straps as well as normal straps which are all interchangeable and can be worn in a variety of ways (one strap for halter neck etc).

I can't really get wound up about what bras other people wear though. In any case people's fashion sense is often a lot more offensive than them just having a bra on show.

SuperFlyHigh · 05/07/2015 08:23

dowser I suppose that comment is to me?!

My only strapless bra is from bravissimo and bloody painful to wear all day are you seriously saying I should either wear the uncomfy bra all day or not wear my strapless jumpsuit?!

When they make a comfy strapless bra for my size eg 28FF I will listen to you otherwise please avert your eyes if you see me and my friend in same jumpsuit and bras showing and hurting your eyes!

User543212345 · 05/07/2015 08:25

Superfly (autocorrect has you as Superbly, which made me smile) that would cause me to raise an eyebrow too - why not wear nude pants/a thicker dress/no pants etc.

I think some people are misunderstanding me - a bit of bra showing is kind of understandable, and really not an issue. The whole bloody thing on show is odd to my eyes (and maybe an indication of my repressed upbringing). I'm quite booby myself, and having lost a lot of weight have much more skin than volume in my boobs which makes going braless impossible without looking incredibly droopy, so I just make sure that the outfit I wear has straps that cover my brastraps, or use a converter to make a racerback/lowback bra (these converters are very cheap on eBay) rather than have it all on show. The only strapless bra I've found to hold me up is the wonderbra ultimate but the silicone on it gives me blisters so I don't wear strapless tops.

Honestly yesterday I saw some lovely tops/dresses that could have been worn with a multiway bra or a normal bra using a converter and looked very elegant, and instead there was underwear on show everywhere.

Oh and dowser I just said upthread I'd try a bandeau bikini with said jumpsuit but hadn't thought of that before...

You really have no idea what it's like to be my size and by the way I'm a small/Top Shop 12 so not huge not that THAT matters. Angry

SuperFlyHigh · 05/07/2015 08:28

sweary the comment wasn't to you as I did read your original thread, however forgive me if I'm wrong but dowser was offended.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2015 08:28

I don't understand why someone would wear a strapless top with a strapped bra. Why?? It makes no sense at all.

YANBU.

SoupDragon · 05/07/2015 08:32

Why buy a strapless jumpsuit if you can't wear a strapless bra? Surely the point of a strapless item of clothing is that there are no straps. I don't like strapless bras so I don't buy strapless clothing.

Obviously people can do what they like but it doesn't mean I understand why :)

Sansarya · 05/07/2015 08:33

YANBU OP, a bit of bra strap or side fabric showing is sometimes inevitable, but I don't see the point of wearing a backless dress or top if your entire bra is going to be on show as it kind of defeats the purpose! And those clear bra straps with strapless tops? They aren't fooling anyone!

Another braux pas is a lacy bra under a sheer top when you can get smooth tshirt bras everywhere these days and for any size, even at Primark!

usualsuspect333 · 05/07/2015 08:34

I can't work myself up to give a fuck about seeing someones bra.

sebsmummy1 · 05/07/2015 08:34

OMG not a 'grey, old bra!!!!' Maybe she couldn't afford to replace it Hmm

pasturesgreen · 05/07/2015 08:40

YANBU, bras on show are a pet peeve of mine. And of course in this climate the problem becomes particularly offensive.

What annoys me most is the fact that, most of the times, a decent strapless bra would resolve a multitude of problems.

Want to wear a strapless top but have no strapless bra? Wear something else until you go buy the appropriate bra, it's that simple.

Underwear on show is gross, on both sees.

I couldn't give a toss about seeing a bra strap here or there but yesterday I saw a (young) woman walking down a busy street in her bra. Just her bra. Definitely not a bikini top. Young people nowadays eh?! Having said that my 19yr old daughter thought it a bit odd too Grin

daisychain01 · 05/07/2015 08:55

Strapped bra worn with a strapless top, well that should go in the other thread running at the moment "WRONG!!"

Runningupthathill82 · 05/07/2015 08:57

The odd strap sticking out doesn't bother me.

But an ordinary bra with a strapless dress or jumpsuit - no. Just no. It looks ridiculous, and messy IMO. I don't understand why anyone would buy strapless when they haven't got the underwear to go with it. It's not as if there aren't any strappy dresses and jumpsuits out there.

I am large of boob and struggle with strapless bras. I don't even own one at the moment. Hence I don't wear strapless tops.

Also, I find strapless tends to look better on petite people anyway. It's probably for my own good that I can't "do" strapless properly, as my boobs are big (30ff) and my arms are less than toned. A strappy top with a well fitting bra is much more comfortable and flattering.

The only exception for me is sports bras, which can work well under flimsy racer-back vests, especially in summer when I want to run in the lightest kit possible.
