Tattoo and OH - AIBU?

My OH doesn't like tattoos. I don't have any, but I have always wanted one, and in general I quite like them. I recently achieved something, a sporting success that I've worked very hard for and am really proud of. I'd love to get a small, not visible except in underwear, tattoo to commemorate it (sort of like the Olympic ring tattoos that Olympians get). I just like the idea of having a reminder of something that I'm proud of and worked so hard for.
But he'd hate it. He really would. He just doesn't get the point of them, even the Olympic rings he thinks are tacky and off-putting.
So - AIBU to get it done anyway? I think if it were the other way round, I'd be happy for him to have something that he really wanted, even if I didn't particularly like it. But equally, I don't want to upset him or have him feel that I've done something that is a real deal-breaker.

It's not a 'confused' face, it's a 'wry' face. Just because MNHQ call it 'confused' on their emoticon list doesn't mean it is us for that.

Like Envy is mostly not envy at all, it's green-about-the-gills
Hmm isn't 'hmm' by any stretch of the imagination, it's WTF? or 'you don't know what you're talking about' or 'I smell bullshit' or some variation... not 'Hmm'.

I want to know what the sporting achievement is!

I quite like some tattoos, particularly ones with a story behind them.

It's just when you see the dolphins of the 90s, the Chinese symbols and tribal armbands of the 00s and the full sleeves of now that I find it a bit embarrassing. It demonstrates a lack of foresight and individuality IMO.

I mean, I wouldn't want to wear the baggy jeans, pigtails, chokers and napkin tops that were just the thing in 2001, so why would I still want a black squiggle that means "love" in Mandarin, or whatever, at the base of my spine?

I love tattoos and have many hours worth of ink. All can be covered if I choose. I had my first at 20 and approaching 40 had a big one done over a few sessions. I never regretted any of them. It is a shame that this has turned from comments about the OPs situation into a chance to slag of tattoos and people who have them. I am shocked that one poster likened tattoo to scars and said they make a person unattractive. Nice.

OP if you really like the idea of the tattoo in a few months, discuss it with your DP. You might find he is perfectly ok with the idea if it is important to you. While there are strong reaction on here to the idea of tattoos I think a lot of people while they wouldn't have one are interested and accepting.

Maybe she said that because she sees tattoos as scars and thinks they make a person look unattractive.

I'm shocked that someone would criticise someone else from voicing a valid opinion, just because they didn't agree with it. Nice.

I have seen lots of tattoos that look like scars or burns. Especially those with a lot of red/purple or pink.

These tattoos from a distance look like bad psoriasis or a burn.

Yes, keepto, actually they do, I can see that.

How somebody could sit through that without leaping up though, that takes some determination.

keeptothewhiteline · 26/06/2015 06:53

It's why they would want to that beats me.

To my mind tattoos are a disfigurement.- the pictures above demonstrate that. And these are not the worst I have seen in terms of quality of art.
