Strangers talking to my baby

annatha · 04/06/2015 19:41

People love babies. I'll often smile at them or say hi if I see a little kid looking at me, but since having dd I'm amazed at how many people waltz up, stick their heads in the pram and start cooing. luckily dd is a social butterfly and usually laps it up but what if she wasn't? DH hates it and has actually had words with old women who have startled dd by getting right in her face when she's grumpy or tired. He was sat at a table in a cafe yesterday with her while I queued and a woman actually leant over his lap to talk to dd. probably a cougar. Anyone else have this?

OttiliaVonBCup · 04/06/2015 19:43

Sort of.

People talk to my dog all the bloody time.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 04/06/2015 19:43

Is this a stealth brag or a pfb thread? Or both....

I always like it when people show attention towards my DD, I think it's sweet! A little awkward when I'm stuck there trying to make small talk, but I think people are just being nice really

hazeyjane · 04/06/2015 19:47

Hey?

Yarp · 04/06/2015 19:47

Well if she wasn't 'a social butterfly' then you'd deal with it on her behalf, in a kind way. Although doesn't necessarily sound like your DH agrees

It's nice that people love children, I think.

Do you know many elderly people don't get to talk to anyone all day, least of all a small baby

ToastyFingers · 04/06/2015 19:47

You'll probably get flamed for this but I agree with you.

DD hated being touched and fussed by strangers, it'd upset her every time, to the point where she'd get anxious about going in shops etc.

Now she's bigger she just covers her face or shouts no, which seems to put most people off sufficiently.

fiveacres · 04/06/2015 19:47

Oh, people are being nice. I love it when people do this to DD as I can get rid of her for a couple of minutes.

MayPolist · 04/06/2015 19:47

Yes and all babies are. They cannot thrive without human contact, it is how they learn. This is why babies smile and look at people to try to get their attention, it is an evolutionary mechanism to make sure they are cared for, even if their mother isn't around

Toasty

So you say - sorry, she's not feeling sociable.

MrsTedCrilly · 04/06/2015 19:49

I've never had anyone get so close to DS but they do chat and pull faces to him which is really lovely. I love how babies brings out the softy in people. If they are literally sticking their head in the pram then it's a bit much though!

AndNowItsSeven · 04/06/2015 19:49

Your dh has " had words" with elderly ladies cooing over your baby? He sounds like a bully.
Yabu.

ToastyFingers · 04/06/2015 19:50

I disagree may
My DD certainty wasn't like that.

crustsaway · 04/06/2015 19:50

I think its a lovely thing to do and don't understand people like you at all.

SaucyJack · 04/06/2015 19:50

My DD is not a social butterfly. She either cries, headbutts the floor or looks the other way and studiously ignores them. They soon get the message Wink

ApocalypseThen · 04/06/2015 19:50

I think it's great when people do this. I don't want my little ones growing up in a hostile, unfriendly or indifferent world. Where would we be if everyone didn't love little babies? They're so precious and gorgeous when they're brand new.

NerrSnerr · 04/06/2015 19:50

People always stop and coo at my baby. That is because my baby is THE most adorable baby ever. I tell no lies.

TwinkieTwinkle · 04/06/2015 19:51

Can a baby be a 'social butterfly'? Confused

lentilpot · 04/06/2015 19:51

I don't mind as long as the baby is awake, some old lady lifted up the muslin draped over my DS's pram and woke him up, I could have throttled her!

Saucy

Miy DS1 had the most gorgeous eyes, so he'd attract a lot of attention. Yes, he was even more lovely that the OPs, or your Grin. But he was not very 'sociable'. More of a hard thinker.

ToastyFingers · 04/06/2015 19:53

Believe me, i've tried that, it's usually followed by "oh no! Is someone feewing gwumpy? Cootchie coo"
