"A boy? You won't know what's hit you"

I have a DD aged 22mo and am pregnant with DC2 who I have just found out is a boy. I am sure I am being hormonal and oversensitive but I'm finding the things people say really annoying...so far I've had...

"A boy? You won't know what's hit you"
"OMG you have no idea how exhausting boys are"
"Boys are so different to girls - they never sit still...prepare yourself..."

And loads more besides. I know this is all very well intentioned but as someone with a DD who could best be described as a total livewire - is always climbing something, jumping off things, sticking things into plug sockets, running around like a mad thing, bashing things, swallowing pebbles etc - I'm finding it really annoying!

Who are these people who think little girls sit there angelically playing with dollies? Do they seriously think I've just been sitting back relaxing for the past 2 years sipping from a wine glass while she looks after herself? (I wish)

And does anyone have a good comeback that won't make me sound like a total nark?

I have no idea why this is said as children are all very, very different. People like to hang on to stereotypes I guess.

BanKimoon · 31/05/2015 09:56

Don't even bother coming back. It's utter bollocks. DS is about the same age and is very laid back and sweet, his little girl friends seem like much more of a handful! Kids are kids, especially at that age. Congrats on expecting a lovely boy and I hope all goes smoothly!!

SumThucker · 31/05/2015 09:56

No comeback for you, but boys are fab! My daughter runs me ragged, though. Grin

ChannelingFlop · 31/05/2015 09:58

Exactly the same happened to me. I never did come up with a good comeback. The worst was people who wanted to commiserate with me when they heard it was a boy! Rude.
DS is awesome and 7 months old now. More wriggly than DD was but I don't think that has anything to do with him having a willy

Rosieliveson · 31/05/2015 09:59

People love teasing pregnant women Hmm. I'm almost 20 weeks and get comments like that lot. For what it's worth though, my DS (18m) is an incredibly calm and content little boy. Not all members of all sexes have the same temperament.

LokiBear · 31/05/2015 10:00

You know the comments are stupid so ignore them. My dd had colic. She couldn't have been a more difficult baby. I defy any second baby of mine to be more challenging than her, male or female! My SIL has one of each and her little boy is so much more chilled and relaxed and her dd.

AbbeyRoadCrossing · 31/05/2015 10:00

I get this too. I currently have DS and am pregnant with DC2. People can't compute that I'd be as happy with 2 boys as I would with a girl and a boy.
Almost as soon as I'd had him I got a 'boys are trouble' off the midwife. It's all lighthearted but it's all the time. And probably daft but I do worry that if people keep saying he's going to be naughty etc in front of him then he might get the idea to be naughty.
Even my friend who's just found out she's having a boy sent me a text saying 'arghhhhhhh it's a boy, trouble coming'

meglet · 31/05/2015 10:00

ime there's very little difference. Both my dc's are active and balls of energy.

dd has never sat down and played with dolls, I have trouble keeping her still for the seconds it takes to put a ponytail in!

LokiBear · 31/05/2015 10:00

Than her dd^

SoggyBottoms · 31/05/2015 10:00

Ha Chanelling I guess I should just be pleased that hasn't happened! That's crazy.

People can be such dicks.

You might well not know what's hit you - you're soon going to have your livewire toddler and a baby.

That is pretty intense! Grin (But brilliant :) )

The fact that the new baby will be able to wee in your face probably won't be a major concern.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 31/05/2015 10:02

Don't bother with comebacks.

Tell them how thrilled you are to be having a gorgeous boy , how you're really looking forward to him.

I have 3, boys are brilliant, congratulations Flowers

DosDuchas · 31/05/2015 10:02

boys are like dogs

feed exercise let them rest

ladymariner · 31/05/2015 10:02

Utter rubbish! Ds has been an utter joy all the way through, I've been very lucky, he's funny and laid back, and makes me laugh so much.....enjoy your boy! Xxx

WinterOfOurDiscountTents15 · 31/05/2015 10:03

People talk an awful lot of shite. They usually don't mean anything by it. I guess if we all accepted this though MN would shrivel up from lack of use!

Boy, girl.....its a baby. End of story.

maroonedwithfour · 31/05/2015 10:03

I have three girls who I thought were handfuls then I had ds.... Just saying. Hes lush.

SoggyBottoms · 31/05/2015 10:04

Bathtime I hadn't even considered the face weeing possibilities...I take it all back !

Psippsina · 31/05/2015 10:04

I have three boys

First very difficult to control handle, I thought it was me

Second very easy indeed, didn't even cry

Third another tornado

It's totally random.

CuppaSarah · 31/05/2015 10:05

I've always found toddler and preschooler boys tend to be calmer and more cuddly than girls, then around 3-4 it all changes and a lot of the boys become more boisterous and the girls settle often down a bit more. Obviously hugely generalising abd there are a lot of exceptions, but working in preschools and nurseries it really seems to be the majority.

I would just laugh when people say such silly things and ask why having penis makes them so much more hard work than girls. Don't be snarky, just seem amused and lighthearted. I bet none of them can come up with anything better than 'boys will be boys' then you'll know they don't have a bloody clue what they're talking about. Congratulations on your little boy Flowers

OrlandoWoolf · 31/05/2015 10:05

Just wait till they get to be teenagers....

Teenage boy or teenage girl... All have their own issues and personalities. Because they are individuals.

Newshoesplease · 31/05/2015 10:05

I'm getting the opposite now I'm having my first girl. "Oh god, good luck". People just HAVE to say something. Incredibly irritating.

BathtimeFunkster · 31/05/2015 10:06

boys are like dogs

Shock

WTF??

purplemurple1 · 31/05/2015 10:06

Surely all toddlers are like dogs though

SaucyJack · 31/05/2015 10:06

My oldest DC was the type who'd squirt tomato sauce in the washing liquid drawer every time I closed my eyes to blink. My middle DC is the sort who'll sit and play with Lego quietly for hours. My youngest has such a foul temper that I get strangers commiserating with me in Tesco when they headbutt the floor repeatedly. All three are girls.

Just do a tinkly little laugh at them and tell them you didn't think anyone really still that sort of sexist rubbish in 2015.
