Without even trying I usually eat 10+ portions a day, I just can't think how anyone doesn't have at least 5 a day.

Today ive had
oats with kiwi and banana
Apple to snack
Chicken pasta with tomatoes, courgette, onion garlic peppers mushrooms (3 portions at least)
Greek salad tomatoes, cucumber, avocado Basil red onion

And now currently snacking on carrots and humous

I don't understand how people have a problem with it.
Bloody Mary for breakfast, that's 2 in one. Glass of cider at lunchtime, that's 3. A gin and tonic in the late afternoon with either cucumber or lime in it followed by wine at dinner

PHANTOMnamechanger · 16/05/2015 18:31

But am intrigued as to how they don't feel like s!@t

Well if we are talking about folk who literally eat hardly any fresh f&v at all, they probably do feel like shit, ie lethargic, constipated , bad skin etc, but that is their "normal", so they don't know.

I was watching a program about a large family on benefits, eating all cheap, processed, wheat laden foods in the main, and what struck me was how ill they all looked. The ones in their 30s looked 10 years older too.

dixiechick1975 · 16/05/2015 18:35

Purreed fruit is not an option on the Sodexo hospital menu. Had a little soup (made from a packet) yoghurt no bits and vanilla flavour ice cream.

Artandco · 16/05/2015 18:48

Well Maybe not in hospitals but for elderly or those with chewing problems a blender could be a solution if they wanted. A nutribullet takes no more cleaning than a normal cup, and can throw veg and fruit in raw and not cut up so would be helpful to many. You can choose to not eat veg or fruit of course, but saying people don't due to chewing is a poor excuse

BigChocFrenzy · 16/05/2015 19:31

PHANTOM If you took that satsuma back & forth to work, that's 5 days x 2 journeys, so 10 portions - you've nailed it Smile
I manage 5-8 portions daily, but that means I have to buy loads of different veg & fruit to tempt myself.
I'm embarassed by how much I bin, because some veg or berries only stay fresh a couple of days.

Many people have to buy what keeps, is cheap, everyone will eat and isn't a faff to prepare when you all get home starving & knackered.
Another major challenge is that each portion has to be 85g of a different food. It would be much easier to eat 3 peppers and 2 bananas, but that's still only 2 portions.

Redglitter · 16/05/2015 19:34

I eat NO vegetables and don't feel like s* I do eat fruit though. Drink plenty etc. I've NEVER eaten veggies

PHANTOMnamechanger · 16/05/2015 19:38

HaHa Bigchoc Grin

confession: I ate choccy on 3 days instead of satsuma

Artandco · 16/05/2015 19:38

Wow red, you have never eaten any? What do you eat can I ask? As veg and fruit is probably 70-80% of our diet

PHANTOMnamechanger · 16/05/2015 19:41

I was wondering what on earth red eats too!

no chilli/spag bol/risottos/soups/roast dinners/no salads AT ALL?

how do you manage to eat out?

DisappointedOne · 16/05/2015 19:58

What veg is in spag Bol?

hotdogsandmustard · 16/05/2015 20:03

Ha redglitter were we separated at birth ?

I just move it around my plate

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/05/2015 20:03

Tomatoes, carrots, celery, onion.

Nonie241419 · 16/05/2015 20:05

I hardly ever eat 5 a day. If I have breakfast, it's usually buttered toast. If I have lunch, it's also usually buttered toast. If I snack, it's generally pilfered biscuits. Dinner usually includes 1 or 2 portions of veg. No pudding. Apart from a couple of biscuits with a cup of tea in the evening, that's me done for the day. I don't want to swap my toast for fruit and I don't want to add fruit in as an addition. I do occasionally worry about it, but not enough to want to change.

idliketoteachtheworldtosing · 16/05/2015 20:07

congratulations you have earned my very first Biscuit

DisappointedOne · 16/05/2015 20:10

I've never eaten spag bol - I've made proper ragu for DH and DD - but thought most people made bolognaise with meat, onion and tomatoes (which are a fruit).

MitzyLeFrouf · 16/05/2015 20:13

I'm afraid it can't have been proper ragu if it didn't contain carrot and celery.

Artandco · 16/05/2015 20:14

I would make spaghetti bolgnaise sauce with at least tomatoes, carrots, onions, garlic, celery. Usually add peppers, courgettes and mushrooms also but that's us not standard I suppose

NotReallyAPrincess · 16/05/2015 20:16

I thought I'd had a delicious 0 fruit & veg day today, but remembered that I chucked some blueberries onto my toffee cheesecake. Maybe half a portion. Today's been spectacularly crap in terms of eating: I have had
Pancakes and bacon and maple syrup for breakfast
Half a packet of fruit pastilles (not real fruit, sadly)
Ham sandwich
Half a tube of Aldi Pringles
Steak & chips
Cheesecake Grin

It's been a brilliant day. Now I'm having some Wine.

(No, I don't eat like this every day. But YABU to be shocked that people, on average, don't eat healthily. )

Strathconon · 16/05/2015 20:22

Hi ouryve long time no see. I'm glad someone's saying what I was thinking - about the portion size.

Marvel101 · 16/05/2015 20:28

Do you eat enough of each of those to separately count all if them as portions?

CremeEggThief · 16/05/2015 20:30

Most smug op I have ever read on MN.

TooManyMochas · 16/05/2015 20:31

I don't eat my five a day because frankly I just can't be arsed. Middle class food puritanism bores the life out of me Grin.

atticusfinchatemybaby · 16/05/2015 20:32

What's happened to OP? She's been absent for a while. Has she shat herself to death or just disappeared to binge eat kale?
