Without even trying I usually eat 10+ portions a day, I just can't think how anyone doesn't have at least 5 a day.

Today ive had
oats with kiwi and banana
Apple to snack
Chicken pasta with tomatoes, courgette, onion garlic peppers mushrooms (3 portions at least)
Greek salad tomatoes, cucumber, avocado Basil red onion

And now currently snacking on carrots and humous

I've just completed my 5 a day.I've had -
Mixed dried fruit in my porridge
A banana
Beetroot slices
Houmous
Salsa dip
Some mini peppers stuffed with ricotta.
Actually it was quite easy today. I usually try and eat 2 portions of fruit (easy) and 3 portions of veg a day. I prefer to have my 3 portions of veg in one meal then I can have something like toast and marmite or a toasted teacake for my other meal. Yes, I love my bread and bread products.

shelleybee · 16/05/2015 16:55

Breakfast today was a white bread roll with margarine.
Had an Aero mid-morning.
Lunch was two white bread rolls with margarine.
Just had some haribo as a light snack.
Dinner will be a margherita pizza.
So that's 0 for me today!

I don't eat fruit, it is full of sugar (I do love those mushed up fruit nakd bars but they are a biscuit and not a fruit).
Today I have eaten sausage, bacon, omelette, toast and a tomato/pepper balsamic chutney thing that may equal one portion of veg. I am having slow cooked pulled beef for tea that may come with some veg.
I very rarely manage five a day unless I have made veg soup.

SummerHouse · 16/05/2015 17:02

Aday!

I thought it was a week.

EuphemiaCoxton · 16/05/2015 17:10

Does rose Turkish delight count?

notinagreatplace · 16/05/2015 17:14

I am vegetarian and genuinely really love fruit and vegetables but, even so, I don't always hit 5 a day just because I don't eat that much. E.g. yesterday, I ate a small salad for lunch (courgette, halloumi, beans, seeds, tomatoes) which was probably 1 portion), curry and chapatti for dinner (probably 1-2 portions) and some watermelon (1 portion). At most, that was 4 portions.. Sometimes, I have a meal with no fruit or veg - e.g. macaroni and cheese or a cheese sandwich and then I only hit 3 portions.

Stillwishihadabs · 16/05/2015 17:19

Do we think people's digestive systems become accostumed to the amount of fibre in their diet ? If I eat less than 4 a day I do get quite constipated and feel horrible.

I think we do always eat 5+ portions a day each. We eat fairly paleo though and don't have a small food budget

We are fairly busy most days so I try and get as much fruit or veg into breakfast as possible then I don't feel so bad if we don't get lots as the day goes on. Today we have all ( myself, dh and x2 children) eaten,

Breakfast : fruit and veg smoothie - spinach, carrot, cucumber, kale, banana and blueberries.
With poached egg, beans, and mushrooms.

Lunch - greek salad ( tomatoes/ cucumber/ olives/ feta), with lamb meatballs

Snack - kids just had strawberries with greek yogurt

Dinner - will be later tonight- chicken, chickpea and butternut squash casserole ( onions, carrots, peppers added)

That's a typical diet here. Weekdays the lunch will be taken similar to office, and dinner similar will be pre batch cooked to save time. But I have no idea how many portions the above would be because it's not 80g of every item for every person. It's just a variety and eat however much according to age/ how hungry.

RingtheBells · 16/05/2015 17:25

Surely people only snack on carrots if they are on a diet. I do usually get my five a day but I don't fancy snacking on a carrot.

girliefriend · 16/05/2015 17:29

I'm on a tight budget so could not afford it. I do try and make sure dd gets 5 a day where possible

Today so far has been

Toast and marmite
Marmite sandwich
A bag if quavers
1 pitta bread and humous to dip it in
A biscuit

Dinner will prob involve carrots and broccoli when I can tear myself away from mn!!

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 16/05/2015 17:30

Does strawberry flavoured vodka count? please please please

VivaLeBeaver · 16/05/2015 17:32

I haven't had any fruit or veg today. Which is fairly usual. I'm suprised I don't have scurvy. I live off toast and sandwiches and diet coke.

I have however just ordered a Nutribullet which im hoping will kick my arse into some sort of health craze. I don't like veg and just don't seem to be arsed with fruit.

IDismyname · 16/05/2015 17:33

I suffer from IBS and on a FODMAP diet. It means I have to limit the amount of fibre I ingest... so I frequently don't get my 5 a day.

However, I do make sure I eat dairy for calcium, take a vitamin and extra Vit D supplement, and exercise every day....

Do you do all that as well, OP????

OttiliaVonBCup · 16/05/2015 17:35

Strawberry flavour vodka with a slice of lime and some roasted almond.
Lois we talking three out of five!

PHANTOMnamechanger · 16/05/2015 17:35

Do I get any points for taking a satsuma to work every day this week?

It didn't get eaten, the same one has traveled to and fro and is looking a bit manky TBH Grin

I do like veg though and the DC have 2 fruits every day in their lunch.

But it is obvious to anyone with any sense at all that some people, some families, just eat badly day in day out through necessity, through poverty through lack of education, through lack of availability of cheap fresh ingredients, through lack of basic cooking skills, or equipment, or a working oven/hob, or just sheer habit.

dixiechick1975 · 16/05/2015 17:38

Well I've had none since Monday. In hospital nil by mouth then approved for liquid only. Many ill or very elderly people can't chew or digest fruit and veg.

Artandco · 16/05/2015 17:40

Dixie - they can drink it though surely if they wanted in terms of not chewing

Stillwishihadabs · 16/05/2015 17:41

I do understand it. But am intrigued as to how they don't feel like s!@t as I do when I haven't had anything fresh for a couple of meals

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 16/05/2015 17:42

otilla Almond? Ooh thats a new one on me, sounds good! Although if it takes me longer to assemble the drink than it does to drink it we might need to part ways GrinGrin

MummyLuce · 16/05/2015 17:44

Because I actually have a life with like, shit to do...
Breakfast: cereal bar whilst quickly feeding a dc.
Lunch: half a salami sandwich and a pimms at a picnic
Dinner: muesli and an apple in bed after long busy day. I have neither te will, inclination or time to chop carrots for a houmous based snack.

You sound very silly and quite odd.

CupidStuntSurvivor · 16/05/2015 17:45

Sorry I'm so late commenting OP. I was busy making you a chufty badge. Bloody difficult to glue cucumber to things.

ByTheWishingWell · 16/05/2015 17:52

I have no health issues, can afford to eat healthily, have adequate cooking facilities and skills, and, believe it or not, still don't always eat 5 a day! Shock

I do try to make sure DD eats more healthily than me though. For lunch today she was sat in her highchair eating sliced cucumber, pepper, carrot, cheese and plum, while I hid behind her dunking biscuits in my tea. Blush

Talismania · 16/05/2015 18:22

I don't often get 5 a day. I don't buy much fruit and veg because it goes off before I can finish the bag and I hate wasting food. I usually have

Toast with peanut butter or canned apricots with cream for breakfast
Ham, cheese, and lettuce sandwich and a bag of crisps for lunch
Pasta with tomato sauce and cheese, or some kind of meat or fish potatoes and green beans, or takeout for dinner
Cheese and crackers snack

I don't have a particularly varied diet because I don't have the time to plan meals. I tend to buy the same stuff every week and eat the same meals every week. Could I add more fruit and veg? Yes, but it would take me so long to get through it that if have to buy the frozen stuff and I don't like that. I do get through a bag of green beans a week but if I bought a ton of fruit and veg most of it would end up in the bin.
