To be angry at suddenly becoming old?

jimijack · 12/05/2015 14:40

Well tbf it feels like it has suddenly happened.

I used to be gorgeous (I did!!) Gorgeous long blonde hair, 8 stone, trendy, could eat anything, always out here & there. Job I loved, people around me equally you'd & gorgeous.

Now.
I am almost 45. I'm fat, frumpy, short very greying hair, I have a moustache, bushy eyebrows, can't remember when I shaved my legs last. I don't recognize this person in the mirror.
I look forward to the Aldi magazine, my wheelie bin gets out more than I do & I've had to change jobs. Much less enjoyable, challenging and mundane.

How did this happen?
I LOVE my life, I am very fortunate, I just hate me & what has happened to me.

Time has gone nowhere, really fast.

op, I love that your wheelie bin gets out more than you, that sentence just about sums up my life! Grin

jimijack · 13/05/2015 09:53

Awwww you ladies have made me laugh and reflect.

Tbh I couldn't give a shiny shite about being attractive to any one else, it's how it makes me feel and the speed at which it has all come about.

As previously mentioned, I am exceedingly fortunate and have a very very happy life, of course I do not take that for granted,

My baby has given me a huge breath of fresh clean wonderful air. For him I keep healthy. It's just taking a while & a ton of effort to shift that 3 stone pregnancy weight gain nearly 2 years on. I'm tired, it's gotta affect your outlook & perspectives.

Wooohooo...bring it on, while there are razors, hair dye and threading, oldness can just fuck the fuck off Grin

oh oh

woman in shop just said to me (on discussing my thirteen year old ) oh you must have had her young then.

i had to laugh given i was feeling like an old haggard whellie bin person am hour ago.

i told her i love her, and i shall run with that comment today.
(and she was younger than me so it must be true )

netty7070 · 13/05/2015 10:45

I'm 45 this year. My theory is that when we were stone age people, hardly any of us would actually get to BE this old, therefore middle age still comes as a shock. Christ knows what proper old age will be like! Shock

SolidGoldBrass · 13/05/2015 10:51

I do get that, if you were naturally conventionally pretty in your younger days, it is far more distressing to realise that you have 'lost your looks'. Mainstream prettiness is dependent on being young and, even if you have naturally beautiful bone structure and are prepared to do the maintenance work on yourself, there comes a point when you are only going to be 'not bad for her age.' And yes, that sucks. It sucks just as much if you were very successful at something physical (sport or dancing) when young, because that, too, will go as you get older - no matter how hard you work, there comes a point when younger bodies are simply more efficient at the sport/dancing than you.
But this is why the thing they tell you when you are young, that you think is either a lot of old cock or just jealousy, is actually very true: don't put everything into the one thing that's dependent on being young. You won't be this pretty/athletic/strong forever. Devote at least some time and attention to your other good qualities and develop other passions.

DuncanQuagmire · 13/05/2015 10:57

that is true, SGB.
a problem is that many of us were raised or brainwashed by society to think that our only value was in our looks. Just have a look at a 'Jackie' magazine from the 70s !!
I think I look great now at the age of 50, I am slim, strong able bodied and have hardly any lines on my face. All those years of being a miserable hag has paid off!!

ghostyslovesheep · 13/05/2015 10:58

45 in 2 weeks and hating it - pre kids I was a tiny fit gym bunny now I am a short fat hairy woman who runs just to stop getting any fatter

ghostyslovesheep · 13/05/2015 11:22

Thanks Blush I think we all look better than we think ... Beard is hidden by make up in that shot! Wink

Nellagain · 13/05/2015 11:25

There is hope!
I had a manager in her 60s whose style and trendiness is the envy of everyone from their 20s onwards. She looks fantastic at 65. Still parties still works. Very young outlook. She is my role model for growing old disgracefully.

I think the trick is to look after yourself and think young.

however · 13/05/2015 11:31

I'm 47 and am starting to quite like my grey hair. I think it suits me.

I like how I look.

herethereandeverywhere · 13/05/2015 11:35

Never forget that getting old is a gift - only the lucky ones manage it.

I have lost friends that shall remain youthful for eternity - but they'd have given anything to get old.

[Sorry for the downer, supposed to be a perspective thing.]

scandip · 13/05/2015 11:39

All you ladies that posted a pic are pretty. Noddy, not sure about the tape.

DuncanQuagmire · 13/05/2015 11:39

yes herethereandeverywhere, I totally agree, some of my school friends were dead at 18, bet they would have loved the chance to get grey and so on.

6cats3gingerkittens · 13/05/2015 11:47

I'm shocked by my arthritic knees which prevent walking, standing (I have to wash up in short bursts) gardening and cycling. Also the back has "gone". The windows are fil

...filthy and even the new vacuum cleaner is too heavy to carry upstairs.
Life is pretty shitty. Bugger it. But I am 67 so should I have expected all this?

Gruntfuttock · 13/05/2015 12:10

6cats3gingerkittens, I have the same problem with arthritis. Medication has made me put on weight, but getting exercise, even just a brisk walk - especially if any of the walk is even slightly uphill - is very painful indeed. It's all very well to say "there's no need to get fat when you're old" but thinhgs aren't always so simple.

Gruntfuttock · 13/05/2015 12:11

Please excuse typos above. Should have put my reading glasses on.

6cats3gingerkittens · 13/05/2015 13:01

Hello Gruntfuttock, I didn't mention the weight gain as its all so depressing. And by the way. The 3 ginger kittens are 3 strapping toms, shiny furred and very affectionate, who know that there is a cooked chicken lurking somewhere in the kitchen. I had better dish some up before they bite lumps out of my leg.

thegreylady · 13/05/2015 13:07

Hi folks
I am 71
I have grey hair, dodgy feet and my most exciting post in recent months has been a poo collecting kit to check for bowel cancer.
I am more than 20 years older than most of you and WOW! Those 20 years have been amazing, some of the best in my life. I'm unlikely to have another 20 but I'm not old till I'm done :)

thegreylady · 13/05/2015 13:10

Here is a picture of me wishing I was somewhere else :)
