To ask this reception teacher to back down?

My son will be 5 in June. He is in reception. They are having a teddy bear picnic tomorrow. Text message yesterday warning parents 'bring your child's favourite bear to school'. My son loves his build a bear toothless dragon bear. He told his reception teacher how excited he was to bring this toy to school. He was sobbing as he came out of school and teacher said to me 'DS is sad as he has said he wants to bring toothless to school tomorrow. He can't. It's a teddy bear picnic not a dragon picnic. Our theme is goldilocks and the 3 bears not 3 dragons. Find a bear'

He is so upset, toothless is his favourite bear. I have suggested that we take toothless plus a teddy bear. AIBU to ask teacher to let toothless sit on desk and watch while bear joins in? Or am I undermining teacher? Another compromise? He's 4 ffs.....

In all fairness, DS has a monkey, a pig, an iggle piggle, and a scout. Nothing else.

And monkey is his favourite.
I do think the combination of "favourite" and "bear" is misleading.

I don't believe the update. Either that's not true, or what op said teacher said in op isn't. Because they don't match up whatsoever.

Seriouslyffs · 08/05/2015 20:57

Glad it ended well. I would have made him take a bear and had the child going Hmm and Sad at all the other children with their non bears.

MeggyMooAndTinkerToo · 08/05/2015 20:59

arethere. I don't believe it either.

But the child made the dragon at build a bear. Ergo, to the child, it's a bear.

FastWindow · 08/05/2015 21:28

Can't believe I just said ergo. Sorry MN.

Tell her that bears evolved from dragons (ok dinosaurs)

MeggyMooAndTinkerToo · 08/05/2015 21:51

toothless dragon bear

It's a dragon, not a bear!!! Jeez, it's not had to differentiate.

SoldierBear · 08/05/2015 22:34

Just because the dragon came from BAB does not mean the child built it - it could have given ready stuffed to him as a present. So it is irrelevant where it came from.
Although of course BAB themselves do not class it as a bear anyway.
I'd be worried if a child of almost five thought that a toy cat/pig/dragon was a bear no matter where it came from.

FastWindow · 08/05/2015 22:35

Yep camel I am 'bearating' myself.

Claralikessage · 08/05/2015 22:37

Sew bear ears on the dragon.

teatowel · 08/05/2015 23:00

So yesterday the teacher told you in no uncertain terms to bring a bear and today she forgot all about that and welcomed all comers. What a load of rubbish this thread is.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/05/2015 08:37

A dragon is not a bear

Toothless went to school for another activity

I do a teddy bears picnic for children I look after - everyone brings a bear - coz it's a teddy bears picnic !!!

Op - you did something you were asked not to do - bring in the dragon - yet you still did Hmm

you have taught your ds it doesn't matter what an adult says - if I cry then I get my own way

And like others I don't believe the outcome either

never take a fav toy out of the house - I see it to many times that a small child has lost their snuggly and can't sleep

If you make a baby / toddler depend on a stuffed toy to sleep - then make sure you have 3 of them to rotate and wash

But I'm wandering of the post

Toothless is a dragon

It was a bears picnic. You take a bear. If you don't have a bear (rare) then say that to the teacher and she may say bring something diff or you can have one of our bears

I have never known any child not to least own one bear

Kleinzeit · 09/05/2015 11:29

I don’t disbelieve the story. Any teacher can have a bright idea, get carried away and try to take it a bit far, and then think better of it when it comes to the point. Glad it all worked out sensibly.

Is it wrong that I want a Toothless dragon cuddly toy for myself now?

FFS a dragon is not a bear. How are children supposed to understand rules when parents like you ignore them?

Teacher was a didappointing wuss in the end, she should have excluded all non-bear-bearing children from the picnic.

Blondeshavemorefun · 09/05/2015 19:25

miaow i also have a HUGE teddy bear, sits on my sparebear bedroom
