Would it BU to report this store clerk to his manager?

NoPillows · 25/04/2015 15:04

I've just been into Sainsbury's. I look young for my age (not a stealth boast, it's relevant). Among other things I also bought some alcohol. I went to the self-check out tills where the attending store clerk asked me for ID, checked it and I got on with paying for the items all good so far.

Before leaving the store I went to buy cigarettes. When I asked the person staffing that area for the cigarettes he loudly declares "Gosh! You sound younger than me, do you have any ID" I give him my license and then he looks at it and says "oh 1984!" He then holds my license in the air next to my head and loudly ponders "are you sure this is you... I mean your hair is down, are you sure its you!?" I get frustrated and tell him to leave it then (because obviously if he doesn't think its me he's not at liberty to sell me anything).

He then says "No, no, I was just wondering because of your hair" he still has my ID in the air looking at it and then back at me. He does in the end sell me the cigarettes and his colleague next to him says "you've upset her." I then tell him that "he shouldn't treat customers like that" As I walk away he says "sorry miss."

I'd rather he just refused to sell me the cigarettes and I'd have just left, there was no need for this stand off which left me feeling a little bit humiliated. I know that in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter but I really didn't like the way he went on about the whole thing.

I rang the general enquiry line to ask what procedures they'd have in place for bad customer service. I told the rep that I wouldn't want to report him if it meant that he'd lose his job. The rep said in all likelihood he wouldn't lose his job but the store manager would have a word with him and he advised I contact the store directly. So should I call the store manager?

The older you get the more jealous you become of such stories

NoPillows · 27/04/2015 00:48

Exactly Dambusters Exactly. They are all clearly very jealous.

you don't resort to insults? Quite a few of your posts have been insults!
You seems to have zoned in on me in particular just for pointing out a comment.
Yes you have tried to belittle people, example trying to insinuate that you couldn't understand my post because of a spelling error.
I'v only replied to your comments, i won't let someone try to bully me from a page.

lullabyneedy · 27/04/2015 01:11

I was ID'd and on my photo I was a brunette. At the time I was a blonde.

The woman who ID'd said - Yeah you look much better blonde.

She probably crossed the line by saying that, but I found it pretty hilarious

OP YABU but at this point and how this thread had gone seems pretty irrelevant now.

ThereIsIron · 27/04/2015 01:12

YANU ... Smoking will kill you

NoPillows · 27/04/2015 02:36

kali I can see you have nothing to provide to the discussion other than wanting to play victim. So I'll just say yes I was BU. So unreasonable that I don't even know how to begin to rebuild my life. So there. I do hope you are pleased with yourself. I will not keep repeating myself so either you just leave or accept that you are actually wrong. And infact a GF.

Iron I know... I bought an e-cigarette thing weeks ago to help me to quit. I'm taking it day by day. I did the patches and gum but they only helped to a certain extent. I know any initiative will need a great deal of will power but I'm hoping to quit this year, my dad died of lung cancer so I'd be the first to champion anything that worked. I will stop. My Dsis got me to try putting the money i'd spend on cigarettes in a tin just to prove how much money I'd be saving (or wasting).

NoPillows insult me next!! You're very good at it and rather funny.

Hmm need to say something that will push your buttons. Here goes -

OP he was probably flirting with you, don't take it personally that he ID'd you. He could get a fine, did you not know that?!

WinkGrin

kali110 · 27/04/2015 03:12

You are funny. I'v no idea what a gf is. must be because i'm an idiot Grin
Oh yes soooo pleased op. I never cared if you were unreasonable or not.
You are a bully though. You don't like people stating when you've been out of order so you resort to the insults ( or attempts to, fuck off was just unimaginative).
Don't know why you decided to pick me out of everyone though, i feel so special Smile

Only keyboard warrior here is you. I haven't been goady to you or resorted to insults or swearing.

aderynlas · 27/04/2015 06:38

What a crazy thread, made me laugh. Op you clearly know how to stand your ground, im suprised you didnt deal with the cheeky blighter yourself.

Undefined · 27/04/2015 06:46

"you just happen to be the only bugger still willing to be unreasonable"

Confused

It was you that asked if you were being unreasonable, and you were overwhelmingly told yes! It's you that keeps coming back to the thread and insulting other posters. You're the keyboard warrior here!

With that smart mouth you have I can't imagine why you were so humiliated at a 'sales assistant' questioning your ID. Why didn't you just swear at him like you have done to others on here?

GraysAnalogy · 27/04/2015 08:05

I'm in my 20's so clearly not jealous of the story, just think you're being unreasonable. The passive aggressiveness is brilliant though. I too am surprised you didn't come up with a comeback to the checkout person.

ilovesooty · 27/04/2015 09:52

Well interestingly the OP seems to have been deleted several times by MNHQ.
I think there's only one GF here.

KneeQuestion · 27/04/2015 10:14

You sound like an arsehole OP.

Mrsstarlord · 27/04/2015 10:34

I RTFT this morning, I think OP may have been drunk or is unwell. The whole thing is quite odd and was becoming more irrational by the minute. Hopefully OP is now sleeping it off and will feel better soon.

kali110 · 27/04/2015 10:43

Sooty appears the responses deleted were to me ninja and someonelse.
Iv never had seen someone try to humiliate someone before or have that level of aggression and rudeness thrown at me before simply for not agreeing with someone Confused
Says a lot that towards end of thread only op's posts were deleted.

gotthemoononastick · 27/04/2015 11:19

Ancient pearlclutcher here .This whole story/ thread is absolute BOLLOCKS! Always wanted to use that( new to me) word that I have learnt on Mumsnet!!

usualsuspect333 · 27/04/2015 11:20

What a bizarre thread.

usualsuspect333 · 27/04/2015 11:21

It's a very Trollish thread.

There are a lot of them about.

LadyTmalia · 27/04/2015 11:34

MusicForTheMasses
They can lose their job if they sell cigarettes or alcohol to people who may look close to the ID age (25 I think). I would be flattered.

No, they will lose their job if they sell cigarettes/alcohol/knoves/lottery tickets etc to people WHO ARE underage, not who look close to 25 Hmm

YesIDidMeanToBeSoRudeActually · 27/04/2015 11:43

Agree, usual.

Fairly innocuous, even boring, OP followed up by a whole load of goady fucking.

Wonder if it's the same people?

GahBuggerit · 27/04/2015 12:27

It must be so tiring getting wound up about stuff like this, you say you look young but I always thought being a frowny face causes more wrinkles??

Ringing Sainsburys on a Saturday evening about someone having a bit of a laugh.....Grin

NoPillows · 27/04/2015 12:34

I agree Sooty, being able to defend your position without resorting to swearing etc is a much better approach. It is Gah it really is. Usual I think some threads are just deleted by HQ for that reason but i'm not sock-puppeting (if thats a word). I'd eventually trip myself up if I did.

OP posts:
lullabyneedy · 27/04/2015 12:57

I think to be fair to the OP no one can tell her she shouldn't be upset by it.

There are situations I've found myself upset in where others would be like Confused

Being upset is just a reaction to a situation.

I do think this is a classic AIBU where people try to be goady and then act shocked when the OP dares to respond.

Definitely in the camp of I'm surprised you didn't have a witty reply for him at the time NoPillows Grin
