Would it BU to report this store clerk to his manager?

I've just been into Sainsbury's. I look young for my age (not a stealth boast, it's relevant). Among other things I also bought some alcohol. I went to the self-check out tills where the attending store clerk asked me for ID, checked it and I got on with paying for the items all good so far.

Before leaving the store I went to buy cigarettes. When I asked the person staffing that area for the cigarettes he loudly declares "Gosh! You sound younger than me, do you have any ID" I give him my license and then he looks at it and says "oh 1984!" He then holds my license in the air next to my head and loudly ponders "are you sure this is you... I mean your hair is down, are you sure its you!?" I get frustrated and tell him to leave it then (because obviously if he doesn't think its me he's not at liberty to sell me anything).

He then says "No, no, I was just wondering because of your hair" he still has my ID in the air looking at it and then back at me. He does in the end sell me the cigarettes and his colleague next to him says "you've upset her." I then tell him that "he shouldn't treat customers like that" As I walk away he says "sorry miss."

I'd rather he just refused to sell me the cigarettes and I'd have just left, there was no need for this stand off which left me feeling a little bit humiliated. I know that in the big scheme of things it doesn't matter but I really didn't like the way he went on about the whole thing.

I rang the general enquiry line to ask what procedures they'd have in place for bad customer service. I told the rep that I wouldn't want to report him if it meant that he'd lose his job. The rep said in all likelihood he wouldn't lose his job but the store manager would have a word with him and he advised I contact the store directly. So should I call the store manager?

I didn't say noone under 50 smokes...I said it epitomised stupidity for those that do. HTH.

NoPillows · 25/04/2015 21:14

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo You are completely over reacting! I constantly get IDd, and am older than you, and yes, I get a few odd comments too, but it's not the end of the world and not worth getting your knickers in a twist over. Have a smoke and calm yourself down

Thanks for the info. I'll go off now and have a smoke. My knickers aren't in a twist. I have been ID'd many a time, but I've never been made a spectacle of. It is indeed not the end of the world. But it shouldn't give anyone the green light to have a joke at your expense. Horses for courses I expect. Does it help you relive that youthful innocence?

it messes with my cognitive abilities

...evidently.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 25/04/2015 21:15

Hi WMUALMG some of your other friends left a couple of pages ago... Why don't you join them? They're forming a tribute band which I'm sure you'd be more than welcome to join. If at this point you don't know what I'm on about then clearly your life will be better lived elsewhere.. So long my friend.. I will miss you.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 25/04/2015 21:23

I seriously have no idea what you are going on about - anyone want to enlighten me?

ilovesooty · 25/04/2015 21:24

You just sound peculiar now quite frankly.

snowglobemouse · 25/04/2015 21:26

I originally said yanbu but now yabatwat

daffsandtulips · 25/04/2015 21:31

Are you really this offended about something rather minor? Madness.

Dr0pThePirate · 25/04/2015 21:35

I'm standing by my position on the member of staff being unprofessional but I've also moved to the other side of the field from the OP.

And I've put a little fence around my camp.

It's nice hereSmile

snowglobemouse · 25/04/2015 21:36

I'll join you in your camp if you don't mind dr0p

daffsandtulips · 25/04/2015 21:37

Goodness gracious. We'll all be "professional" to the point of becoming robots soon Grin

Dr0pThePirate · 25/04/2015 21:44

No problem snowglobe

I'll just need to check your ID...

TheSultanofPing · 25/04/2015 21:45

This thread has gone a little strange.

YourKidsYourRulesHunXxx · 25/04/2015 21:50

Maybe he had a few customers that morning that were being particularly banter-ous (not a word, I know.) As someone who works in a supermarket, when this happens to me I tend to be in high spirits for a while Grin that is, until I get a grumpy customer then I am pretty much back to normal Wink. his behaviour might not have been by the book, but I think you should move on as he apologised when he realised you were upset. Not everyone would do that.

WindMeUpAndLetMeGo · 25/04/2015 21:53

NoPillows are you drunk? It's the only explanation I can think of for your replies to people

NoPillows · 25/04/2015 21:55

Like I told King I've never understood why on AIBU threads it's ok for everyone to wade in and you're supposed to sit there and accept the abuse. To those that offered constructive advice thanks. But for others who just wanted to have fun being an annoymous poster on an internet forum...?

Sorry to have lost you Dr0p

And daffs there is nothing here that involves UKIP or 'our country' so please await another thread to post your musings.

Yes Sultan I didn't see that coming but I am willing to accept IABU when presented with solid arguments, not "you're clearly crazy OP"

YourKidsYourRulesHunXxx I totally agree with this! You're very right r.e engaging with someone and then the next person being a miserable bitch ie me but he might have actually been that way considering it was a sunny Saturday afternoon and along came ms mardy bum Wink

Hi, just popping in to say I have got this tribute band up and running, if anyone is interested... Smile

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 25/04/2015 22:00

I don't know what happened between pages 1 and 5, don't think I want to.

I understand your frustration OP, but not worth complaining about. I'm closer to 30 than 16, yet got ID'd for a lotto ticket a few weeks back. And I look my age, haven't been ID'd for cigarettes or booze for ages. I generally laugh it off, but some just take the piss.

GraysAnalogy · 25/04/2015 22:02

Who's wading in Confused there's thousands of posters on here so obviously you're going to get quite a few replies.

Seriously why do people post in AIBU if they're going to argue the toss anyway? It defeats the whole point.

Dr0pThePirate · 25/04/2015 22:02

I'm not gone! I'm over here behind the white picket fence with snowglobe cooee!

We represent professionalism and duty of care to customers but can't understand where you're going with most of your posts Confused

ShipwreckedAndComatose Hi, just popping in to say I have got this tribute band up and running, if anyone is interested... That gave me a very good laugh!!! Grin
