tictocstar · 20/04/2015 19:05

If so why? Please people no attacking I am genuinely curious. I know American is more homophobic than UK, and I think (hopefully!) this thread will be empty, but anyone with any experiences or suchlike?

Also please don't accuse me of being homophobic.
(may sound ridic to epect to be accused, but when asking someone this,^ was the reply...)

The difference between pan and bi in my understanding is that pan people can be attracted to trans and androgynous people.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 20/04/2015 19:23

and WTF is pansexual?

Someone who likes fairies?

riverboat1 · 20/04/2015 19:24

It depends what you mean by 'against'. I know quite a lot of people who are against, for example, gay couples being able to get married, adopt children etc. I know people who make fun of the idea of 'being gay' use it freely as an insult, make fun of gay people (not to their faces but as a concept) etc. Most of these people however will say that they don't have a problem with gay people as such, or support peoples' right to be gay just not to have the right to get married or they find it disgusting to think of the idea of kissing someone of the same sex themselves so find it gross seeing other men/women do that.

I am very happy that I have never met anyone who has actually told me or made it clear that they are 'against' people simply BEING gay, and think they need to be 'cured' or that they should be punished or prevented from being in gay relationships.

usualsuspect333 · 20/04/2015 19:24

No one is going to admit to being homophobic on MN.

So a bit daft asking really.

CastlesBlown · 20/04/2015 19:24

No Fairy because Bisexual is built on the basis of there being two sexes with two corresponding genders. Where as Pan sexual throws that all in the air saying sex and gender are both spectrems and that pan sexual individuals don't give a rats arse which combination there partner is.

No idea how that works in real life, no idea why I know that

OrlandoWoolf · 20/04/2015 19:25

Try posting on FWR. You'll get an interesting response on there. It's not that some of them are against trans people. They just have issues with some of them.

KindergartenKop · 20/04/2015 19:25

Q means questioning. So lesbians, bisexuals, gays, transgender and those who aren't wanting to commit to a label but aren't feeling straight.

dejarderoncar · 20/04/2015 19:25

phantom I'm sure you didn't mean it this way, but many people do think that being gay, lesbian, trans, bi, queer + is equivalent to being a 'peedo' or being into bestiality. Those are rightly condemned as they are always, and can only be, unacceptable forms of non-consensual sex. Please do not conflate them with different sexual orientations.

Mrsstarlord · 20/04/2015 19:25

Fairy

No, bi is male / female. Sounds like pan includes transexual, pre / post op etc.

Not sure that I understand the question though tbh. Are you asking whether anyone has hang ups about people of different sexualities?

If that is the case, the answer is no. As long as all partners are willing.

MzunguMzungu · 20/04/2015 19:25

Well that's still bisexual surely? A person doesn't change their physical sex.

Galvanized · 20/04/2015 19:25

What is your question? I am generally anti LGBT+ events etc as it erases women lesbians' agency and visibility.

MadBannersAndCopPorn · 20/04/2015 19:26

Of course there are people against it, do you really think that everyone just accepts people just the way they are?

Are you actually asking 'is there anyone out there who is openly against it and could you explain why?'
If there are mn out there who are against lgbt people, they'd do well to keep it to themselves but I'm sure you'll get an ignorant biggot somewhere here trying to defend their beliefs.

EllaMenoPea · 20/04/2015 19:26

No people might not admit being homophobic but it's already very clear that people quite enjoy being ignorant. 'People that like fairies' is pretty offensive when it's been explained already.

Arkkorox · 20/04/2015 19:27

Pansexual reminded me of the thread in classics where the husband was er.... Enjoying her pots and pans best wind up thread ever

frikadela01 · 20/04/2015 19:27

Bisexuality usually refers to sexual attraction to male and females. pansexuality refers to attraction to males, females, transport etc.... basically anyone regardless. they are not the same thing Though are very similar.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 20/04/2015 19:28

zesty please be assured it was not my intention to compare LGBT to illegal sexual practices AT ALL

I was merely commenting on the OPs use of a '+' sign to include all other sexual inclinations

And FWIW, sadly, not everyone thinks those things are wrong do they, hence all the cover ups, "that's what life was like" etc "she was 12 but consented" etc etc about historical abuse cases. Hopefully we are moving away from that era though.

Moln · 20/04/2015 19:28

Pan sexual hmmm

Very found of certain kitchen equipment?

Smile

More seriously yes OP people are against anyone one heterosexual. People can be 'okay with it' but think it 'fucked up'

There's a referendum here in Ireland soon, and some of the stuff the 'no' campaigners are coming up with is, erm, interesting.

CastlesBlown · 20/04/2015 19:29

today I was informed about grey-sexuals demi-sexuals and sapio-sexuals by my daughter.

I honestly have no idea what those are but according to her, they are a thing.

MzunguMzungu · 20/04/2015 19:29

Transport! Confused

Hoppinggreen · 20/04/2015 19:29

My lovely old stepdad is.
He is genuinely a kind man who wouldn't knowingly offend anyone but he thinks Gay people are poor unfortunates who need to be helped rather than anything else.
I don't bother to argue with him as he is 80 and has slight dementia so there is little point - I would challenge anything he said that was openly offensive but he doesn't. FIL not too understanding of anything other than heterosexuality either but I believe that as Long as he isn't offensive he is entitled to his opinion.
My brother is openly racist and homophobic - we are nc!!

Fairyfellowsmasterstroke · 20/04/2015 19:30

FFS - Why do we need titles and compartments??

Live and Let live is my moto.

Gay, pan, bi, straight, whatever - just be a decent human being and lets all live in harmony without labelling or judging each other.

We should have this as an anthem:-

maddiehayesfan · 20/04/2015 19:30

No, pansexual isn't another word for bi. It includes gender identity as well as sexual identity.

If you're bisexual you're attracted to people of both sexes.

If you're pansexual you can be attracted to anyone regardless of their sex or the gender they identify as.

A real world example: A bisexual woman can be attracted to both men and women who identify as such. A pansexual woman can be attracted to both men and women who identify as such, plus men who identify as female and women who identify as male.

Moln · 20/04/2015 19:30

Bollocks. Loads of cross posts, now my pan sexual thing looks bad. Sorry!

PHANTOMnamechanger · 20/04/2015 19:30

Transport LOL!! So trainspotters etc ? Or steam enthusiasts as DH prefers to call himself!

OrlandoWoolf · 20/04/2015 19:31

There are people who have issues with LGBT people. There are people on MN who have issues with LGBT people. MN reflects society and trans people especially still face massive discrimination.
