to name my little girl this?

I have two boys already and am expecting a little girl in 3 months.

I like the name Brogan as the first name. I have read this is a male Irish name but know a few girls called brogan.

When I tell people the name they do that . Oh that's nice....With a weird smile face.

Do you like Brogan Rose or Brogan Raine? Or am I being silly.

OP posts:

Somebody with better Irish could confirm or correct this but with the h (Broghan) it would be a bit softer, it would be Broyan. But that would be even more confusing because I guess scottish people then, or anybody else with an understanding of the rules of gaelic would pronounce it broyan.

I love the suggestion of teagan. that is so much nicer (jmo of course).
Also Bryony is nice. What about Roisin Brogan. Tuck the brogan in to the middle slot?

RamonatheMisunderstood · 18/04/2015 18:38

I know a Brogan and she's lovely. I really like the name and I like Rose as a middle name too. But it really is your choice and doesnt matter what anybody else thinks at all!

BackCrackandNappySack · 18/04/2015 18:41

Have we ascertained whether it is actually an Irish name yet?

I agree that it sounds more Aussie/American with Irish pretensions than actually Irish. i would put it in the same camp as Morgan, Teagan, Regan, Logan, Shannon, etc which are all awful.

Dowser · 18/04/2015 18:45

Haven't read the whole thread but Dudley Moore was married to brogan lane the actress

squoosh · 18/04/2015 18:50

It's definitely an Irish surname.

That's where it looks just right, over a bar!

Rivercam · 18/04/2015 18:54

I thought it was a girls name.

I like Brogan Rose.

CapnMurica · 18/04/2015 18:54

I can't believe so many people know people with this name - I've never heard it before!

OP, I don't like it. Really, really don't like it. But don't make your decision based on a bunch of randoms on the internet. Discuss with your husband and family and take it from there.

Rainbunny · 18/04/2015 18:58

I like it. I do rather like male sounding names on girls for some reason. Where I live though she may get nicknamed "Bro" as in slang for a male friend (think bro-dude! and "bros before hoes"(sorry for that one).

I think it's wise to alternate an unusual first name with a more traditional middle name, just in case your dd has a really hard time with her first name. I had a couple of friends growing up who went by their middle names all throughout school as they didn't care for their particular first names. One friend went back to her first name when she started uni as she liked it the uniqueness of it by then and didn't worry about being teased.

It sounds kind of american and very male to me: also why would you want it if a few other girls have it? Doesnt mean its great just because a few people have it? But ignore me, i never think just because other people do/like stuff means its fab, i go my own way.

Rainbunny · 18/04/2015 19:15

Another thing to consider OP, while everyone is freely expressing their like or dislike of the name, in the abstract some names don't sound as appealing but when we meet and know the person with the name it usually does fit them and therefore sound better IYSWIM. I just remembered that I never cared for the girl's name Logan in the abstract but I ended being friends with a Logan in college. She was very Irish looking, long russet colored hair, beautiful pale skin with a lot of freckles and it absolutely fitted her. I can't imagine any other Logans in the world looking as much like a "Logan" as she did actually (No offense to other Logans!)

Anjou · 18/04/2015 19:16

If you really love it OP, then it doesn't matter a hoot what anyone else thinks. If you DO care what people think it suggests you're not 100% about it.

If I met a girl called brogan I wouldn't really think much about it. I know girl siblings called Blair & Brodie. It raises a few eyebrows but masculine names for girls are fairly common. However, I would HATE to be called it myself. I had a complex as a child about looking like a boy (weirdo mother would crop my hair to my scalp among other things) and it's stuck with me throughout childhood. Being called Brogan (just not a nice sound to my ears) that could be shortened to 'Bro' would've been too much for me.

Fugghetaboutit · 18/04/2015 19:22

I have a cousin called Brogan, she's stunning and it suits her perfectly. She's Irish

MammaTJ · 18/04/2015 20:26

You are asking, so I will tell you, I don't like it. However, I would never say that in a RL situation. It is your baby-your choice!

monkina · 18/04/2015 20:45

I personally really do not like the name Brogan. As others have said, to me its sounds very masculine and american, like an american football or baseball jock! Sorry, just being honest.

J0annie · 18/04/2015 21:39

I'm also surprised that so many people know a Brogan. I'm Irish and I've never met one. Are all these Brogans American?

EstRusMum · 18/04/2015 21:50

If you want her to have nickname "Bro", go for it.

villainousbroodmare · 18/04/2015 21:55

I'm Irish and know one family of Brogans (surname, obv). They are lovely people so for me the name has good associations; however I would caution you on inserting that 'h'. In the Irish language and also in Anglicised Irish, "gh" has a 'h' sound. Think of Sheelagh (pronounced Sheila) or Eoghan (pnonounced Owen). So if I saw Broghan written down, I would imagine it was pronounced Bro-han or possibly Broe-han, and your desired pronunciation would only be my third guess.

NeedABumChange · 18/04/2015 21:57

I know a female Brogan. She is the harshest woman I know. Very "strong" character. Smoking and drinking cider from 11, terrifying temper, fits the name very well. Very glad she is my friend and not my enemy. Very loyal but her name is not a name I'd associate with an innocent baby.

Also the spelling Broghan is making me think Brog-Han which is even uglier than the original.

shitebag · 18/04/2015 22:01

The Brogans I know are Glaswegian. Definately not American!

Sbear22 · 18/04/2015 22:11

Dh's name is Brogan! He didnt believe me when I read your post aloud to him Grin It's gorgeous for both boys and girls imo and brogan rose is just lovely. Best wishes!

Sbear22 · 18/04/2015 22:12

Ps it's Irish and means badger.

BlueDressingGown · 18/04/2015 22:16

Are you being unreasonable? No - it's not unreasonable to name your child something that you think is nice.

I personally don't like it at all - in fact really dislike it - but it's not my kid!
