to name my little girl this?

I have two boys already and am expecting a little girl in 3 months.

I like the name Brogan as the first name. I have read this is a male Irish name but know a few girls called brogan.

When I tell people the name they do that . Oh that's nice....With a weird smile face.

Do you like Brogan Rose or Brogan Raine? Or am I being silly.

Well as I only know Brogan as a surname Broghan just looks a bit misspelt, as though someone has decided to get a bit kreative.

keepsmiling2015 · 18/04/2015 13:09

I've never heard of that name here in Ireland. It sounds more like a surname 'Brog' is shoe in irish. I wouldn't like it at all but if you do YANBU

keepsmiling2015 · 18/04/2015 13:12

Just read over the posts. If you are calling her Brogan, and are going to be telling people it's an irish name - for the love of god don't make up your own spelling by adding a H because it looks better!

BackCrackandNappySack · 18/04/2015 13:13

I don't like it at all for a girl or a boy really, but especially not for a girl, it sounds heavy and clunky. I also think it sounds too much like Bogan which is the Australian equivalent of a Chav.

What about Brodie? That is much prettier and softer sounding.

blackcats73 · 18/04/2015 13:15

I don't like it but I like boring traditional names. Out of the two choices I like rose though.

80sMum · 18/04/2015 13:20

It's not what I would choose (I keep thinking of "Brogan promises" "Brogan record" etc) but so what? If you like it, go for it.

OutragedFromLeeds · 18/04/2015 13:24

I think it's really awful.

It's not so bad that you'd be 'unreasonable' to use it though.

Sootgremlin · 18/04/2015 13:27

I thought Broghan was the proper spelling of it, that's what had baby name links when I googled it.

Sootgremlin · 18/04/2015 13:29

Aibu is obviously safer than the baby name threads Grin

With the H will it be pronounced Bro-an?

Brown rose...

SoonToBeSix · 18/04/2015 13:48

The h just makes it looked like a made up name. I don't understand why ask for advice and then ignore the majority opinion. She is your baby so it's your choice just don't understand why you wasted your time posting.

Bambambini · 18/04/2015 13:49

Not Australian but I first thought of bogan. Don't hate it though and after the initial meeting, I wouldn't give the name a second thought.

Prefer it with the H and I love Rose anyway. I'm scottish and with the R coming after the B, when I say it - it really bursts out like machine gun fire and sounds almost violent.

ShebaRabbit · 18/04/2015 13:59

Its nice but its not really an Irish name, surname yes, first name no. If you include the H its not Irish at all.

WowserBowser · 18/04/2015 14:08

It livens up Rose I guess

SingingHinnies · 18/04/2015 14:09

I like it

Ratfinkandbobo · 18/04/2015 14:15

Personally I don't like it and wouldn't call a girl that.

hiccupgirl · 18/04/2015 14:19

It's not a name I would give a girl...sounds very much a boy's name and a bit hard for a girl. I like Teagan and Rose as a middle name. Raine just looks and sounds too made up tbh.

MissDuke · 18/04/2015 14:24

I think it is quite 'harsh' sounding, and don't see it as pretty or feminine personally. I am not necessarily into 'pretty' names so don't mean that as an insult, just a fact if you see what I mean.

ApplesinmyPocket · 18/04/2015 14:34

I associate the name with a wonderful TV prog I once watched about Irish Dancing ("Jig"). The small Brogan in that was a lovely child in every way and that's who I think of when I hear the name - a sweet feisty clever girl with magic in her feet. Go for it if you like it.

IcecreamSkoda · 18/04/2015 15:16

When I saw the PP suggesting putting an 'h' in the name I thought that was a great idea and now I see from your update that you think so too. Smile
I think Broghan is lovely and original.

I suggest you don't tell anyone else what name you are considering - you can tell them when your DD is here.

spudholes · 18/04/2015 15:33

Too harsh sounding, especially for a girl.

Skiptonlass · 18/04/2015 15:34

I'm afraid the first thing I thought was Bogan too (sorry, sorry.)

Is it pronounced "brohn" or is the g hard? If the latter, just be aware that she's going to have a very hard time if she ever goes for a gap year in the antipodes. :)

Rose is lovely though. Not keen on Reagan/ teagan - it's a bit "Utah baby namer" (google it for a giggle) but that's just my opinion.

Gods, baby names are such a minefield.... We are going through this right now, trying to find one that acceptable in two cultures!

everyusernameisinuse · 18/04/2015 15:40

I'm in Ireland. I've never heard of a male or female with the first name Brogan - but it is a surname - not a very common one

Andylion · 18/04/2015 15:44

I do think people should name their children what they like, but you asked so....

I agree with other posters who think it sounds very masculine, very macho, in fact, like an action movie character. It reminds me of the McBain character from The Simpsons. Also, to me it would look like you stuck the "Rose" after it in order to tell people that she was, in fact, a girl.

"Briar" sounds even more strange, but it leads me to the name "Rowan", (in the crazy way connotations work on us), which I prefer.
