to name my little girl this?

I have two boys already and am expecting a little girl in 3 months.

I like the name Brogan as the first name. I have read this is a male Irish name but know a few girls called brogan.

When I tell people the name they do that . Oh that's nice....With a weird smile face.

Do you like Brogan Rose or Brogan Raine? Or am I being silly.

I love Brogan Rose

Kitsmummy · 18/04/2015 11:26

It reminds me of Bogey Grin

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2015 11:27

The OP lives in the UK

She can't cover all possibilities that whatever name she chooses, might sound vaguely similar to something in every country in the world.

Sootgremlin · 18/04/2015 11:30

It's an ugly sounding word to my ear, but horses for courses and all that. Seeing it spelled with the 'h' in it does seem to soften it though. I would definitely pair it with Rose or something equally traditionally feminine, the contrast would work better I think.

If you like something don't discuss before baby is here, it is much easier to like a name when it belongs to a lovely child, can really alter the association you have.

GrimDamnFanjo · 18/04/2015 11:30

I'd keep your name choice secret from friends and family. Much easier that way.

trufflesnout · 18/04/2015 11:32

We get it, it sounds like 'bogan'. Except it's not bogan, It's Brogan or Broghan - and furthermore OP is in the UK.

DragonMamma · 18/04/2015 11:33

Sorry, I think it's awful and sounds chavvy as hell. I'd imagine some great big hulk of a girl if I heard Brogan.

Plus I don't think it 'goes' with Daniel at all.

trufflesnout · 18/04/2015 11:34

Nice. All this claptrap about 'feminine' names is horrible.

Ineedtimeoff · 18/04/2015 11:35

I think you can pick fault with every name and can find similarities to offensive words. A child will grow into their name and offensive slang words that are current parlance will have changed meaning or dropped out of fashion by the time your DD is in school. Language is constantly changing and evolving and I love it for that.

I do find it offensive that others say it's a 'chavvy' name, that any name is 'chavvy'. I'd like to re-claim the word. If it's used to simply be an offensive term for working class from a council housing estate, then I will happily call myself a chav and be proud of it.

For me the question is more can you cope with the name? or will you spend the first 6 months of your DD's life being paranoid or sensitive to comment about her name, perhaps looking for offence where there may be none meant? If so then perhaps you may look to a more conventional name. I would suggest the fact that you are looking for reassurance here means that this would be the case. That said, I don't think Brogan is a very unusual name for a girl. I think it's quite on trend actually.

WorraLiberty · 18/04/2015 11:36

But your imagination is no-one else's problem.

I'm not sure the OP would want to take that into consideration.

QOD · 18/04/2015 11:37

It's a gazillion times better than Ester, Maude, Martha, Violet ... all the old twee names
Be bold!

SideOrderofChips · 18/04/2015 11:38

i know a little scottish girl called Broghan

shes a lovely little girl

SoupDragon · 18/04/2015 11:38

Personally I think it is a very harsh sounding and looking name. I also really hate Raine.

Someone made the suggestion Of Teagan further down which has a far nicer sound.

SoupDragon · 18/04/2015 11:40

I'm not sure the OP would want to take that into consideration.

Perhaps she shouldn't have asked for opinions then.

passthewineplz · 18/04/2015 11:46

I quite like it and according to another parenting site it's a girls name.

I also like Briony, Brooke and Brodie which are similar

MissMogwi · 18/04/2015 11:46

I like it. Especially Brogan Rose.

If you and your DP like it then have it,who cares what anyone else thinks?!

Sootgremlin · 18/04/2015 12:10

I imagine if someone came on saying they wanted to call their son Violet or Ava or Ruby the claptrap about masculine or feminine names would suddenly matter rather more.

Thing is OP was wondering why she got muted reactions and wan smiles when she told people her name choice. It's because people have different associations with certain sound or types of name, this thread is helping her to find out why she got those reactions and whether she's happy regardless. Forewarned is forearmed.

Oh I love the name Maude Lebowski so much. Couldn't bring DH round to it though.

daughterofliz · 18/04/2015 12:20

I see it as more as a boy's name but I don't hate it. Brogan Rose is a nice idea because then she has one definitely feminine name she could use if she ever thinks she would prefer to be more girly.

lightsalive · 18/04/2015 12:24

Thanks everyone.

I will not say anymore to people the name I will call my little girl but I am going with Broghan Rose. I do think the H softens it so thank you all.

I live outside London so should be okay. Rose will be middle name so she can give just her first name when she introduces herself to people or double barrier it, whatever she prefers really.

Broghan Rose is definitely the nicest variation and spelling by far, OP. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

bananayellow · 18/04/2015 12:46

I said I liked it earlier but I admit that I like it more with the h.

It doesn't sound chavvy to my chavvy-meter, but then I don't know anyone of that name.

squoosh · 18/04/2015 12:51

The added 'h' looks weird to me, not sure how it has a softening effect? Just stick with Brogan.

Sootgremlin · 18/04/2015 12:59

I don't know, I think maybe the h makes it seem more like Bronagh or Meghan, so softens it a bit, whereas Brogan is more like Logan. Purely associatively.

Ilovehamabeads · 18/04/2015 12:59

I think the H makes all the difference to the written version. Much more feminine.
