To wonder why parents let their children go out dressed inappropriately

Now I know the weather is warning up, and you expect to see chidkren in shorts, t shirts, skirts etc etc but why oh why do parents allow children, I'm talking Young children age 8-9-10 go out dressed in belly tops and shorts that are that short they are exposing some of their bum? It really grates me as surely young girls should not be going round dressed like this, it's inapropriate imo and I wouldn't dream of letting my own daughter walk round in such a state.

I have a just turned 13 year old dd actually, and I've never had any problems with her choice of clothing. Oh and generally I buy my daughter's clothes from Next, Debenhams, Zara, John Lewis.

OP what is the connection between shorts that don't cover your bum and being chavvy?

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 18:11

Jeez when your child becomes a teenager, don't be surprised if she's staying round her friend's house every weekend, or just pops her head round the door to say a quick 'Hi I'm home, goodnight' Grin

I had a friend who used to have to change in the pub toilets and then change back again before she went home, if she wasn't wearing an outfit buttoned up to the chin...

Cherryapple1 · 10/04/2015 18:11

OP - why are crop tops and shorts inappropriate and chavvy? Can you please explain - does it make children look common and not as good as you?

Philoslothy · 10/04/2015 18:12

I think that Next clothes are very similar to Asda. Why is Asda chavvy and Next not?

Twoplus3 · 10/04/2015 18:12

Why.....because I actually give a stuff about how my daughter looks and how she goes out dressed, God im a terrible parent aren't i.

OP posts:
Cherryapple1 · 10/04/2015 18:12

But exactly why are crop tops wrong?

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 18:13

Oh and generally I buy my daughter's clothes from Next, Debenhams, Zara, John Lewis.

But surely you don't expect the chavs to be able to do this on their benny-fits?

Philoslothy · 10/04/2015 18:13

Debenhams can also be similar to Asda, again why is one chavvy ?

Passmethecrisps · 10/04/2015 18:13

Of course you do but so do most parents. They just have different taste. Surely

Quitelikely · 10/04/2015 18:13

Did you just pop in George and primark to pass the time of day then?

RJnomore · 10/04/2015 18:13

My 10yo spent several days dressed as a donkey a couple of years ago. I had to check on here if it was okay to take her to sainsbos dressed as a donkey.

She didn't have belly or bum on show though so op would be fine with that.

I did peel her out of it when the donkey smell became quite realistic.

TheFairyCaravan · 10/04/2015 18:13

I'm a child of the 70s. When we were kids the shorts were really short, we all wore them. Half the time we played out in swimming costumes and nothing else. Heaven knows what you'd have thought back then, OP!

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 18:13

that's an interesting new fact Grin

I am fascinated by what you consider chavvy - do you raise your kids to be as judgemental or is it just your choice of clothes they get foisted on them?

Twoplus3 · 10/04/2015 18:14

Yes exactly, in some way they do look a bit common. I'm not saying that children should be dressed like nuns but nor should they have their bums hanging out a pair of shorts.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 18:14

Why.....because I actually give a stuff about how my daughter looks and how she goes out dressed, God im a terrible parent aren't i

I would have gone with

Judgemental
Out of touch
Deluded
Killjoy

Not 'terrible', so please don't be so hard on yourself Thanks

Philoslothy · 10/04/2015 18:15

Do people who shop in Asda and Primark ( very similar to Next and Debenhams) not care about the way their children look

I'm sorry but that's terrible! If my daughter came down dressed in a pair of shorts that didn't fit properly and didn't cover her bum then they'd go straight in the bin and she'd be asked to go back upstairs to change

Well, to be fair, she went over the park before I saw what she was wearing and when I finally did see her (about two hours later) it would have been a waste of time to have an attack of the vapours then. Everyone had already seen her arse by that point Grin

But don't worry OP, we are off to Matalan in the morning to get her some new shorts and tees - maybe I'll even buy a couple of crop tops in your honour Smile.

MangoJuggler · 10/04/2015 18:15

Does anyone remember that thread from years ago where the OP photoshopped black pants onto photos of nekkid children taken inadvertently? This thread is in similar vein.

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 18:16

terrible mother - no not at all - terrible snob ...jury's out

Philoslothy · 10/04/2015 18:16

I am very common, by bum is usually covered in public.

I realised the other day that lots of dds tops are starting to look like crop tops as she has had a growth spurt.

Tbh I don't like more adult styles on little kids, but crop tops aren't necessarily adult.

It's funny no one would bat an eye lid over boys clothes and complain about them being too sent etc. You may get people calling some items 'chavvy' I guess.

Dressing a girl seems to open up a whole new world of judgement it seems. And I guess it's only going to get worse as dd gets older, today she has on a t shirt/tunic style dress and leggings that are both getting too small. Luckily the dress is the kind that she can just keep wearing as a long top as she gets older.

The other day she went out in a unicorn outfit, as long as it's weather appropriate I don't care what the madthings wwear, Ds4 is super hero obsessed so it's either a dress up outfit or a t shirt with some kind of super hero on it.

I prefer shorts that are a bit longer only because of grazes when falling over but dd has a few skorts from boden that are getting short but she will wear them this summer as they are practical.

How about you stop applying value judgements to children.
