To wonder why parents let their children go out dressed inappropriately

Now I know the weather is warning up, and you expect to see chidkren in shorts, t shirts, skirts etc etc but why oh why do parents allow children, I'm talking Young children age 8-9-10 go out dressed in belly tops and shorts that are that short they are exposing some of their bum? It really grates me as surely young girls should not be going round dressed like this, it's inapropriate imo and I wouldn't dream of letting my own daughter walk round in such a state.

YABU I thought this was going about no shoes in January. My Dd is 8 and thank god is not body conscious in anyway. Nothing like stripping off when it's hot. I think it was only last summer she started wearing a bikini top on the beach. She has a lovely collection of short shorts.

GoddessErrata · 10/04/2015 18:01

When you get to the point of calling children 'chavvy' because you find what they are wearing 'distasteful'.... Shorts and a crop top; and they are little girls of 8-10yrs old... It's time for me to go share my cheesecake elsewhere!

Passmethecrisps · 10/04/2015 18:01

The thing is I have relatives who would think my 2yo dd is dressed 'inappropriately' because she is wearing a pair of hiking type trousers and a fleecy hooded top. She should be wearing dresses because she is a girl

Passmethecrisps · 10/04/2015 18:02

Posted too soon.

So 'inappropriate' is completely subjective.

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 18:02

I did need a large medicinal sherry to cope - she had a child with her - she was probably some kind of woman of ill repute - the child wasn't ever wearing a hat

Bicnod · 10/04/2015 18:02

I think children should wear clothes (or not) in order to be comfortable.

I used to wear shorts and nothing else up to the age of about 8 when it was really hot.

Don't see the issue with children wearing clothes that show their tummies. I do, however, loathe slogans on kids clothes.

Don't see the problem with boys taking their tshirts off when hot either. Mine were getting hot and sweaty playing in the park so they took their tshirts off. If anyone finds the sight of 3 and 5 year old bellies offensive then they are a bit odd imo.

Twoplus3 · 10/04/2015 18:02

Well yes of course, but that's also her perception of her, as she loves going shopping for new clothes and she loves what I buy her. I also let comments all the time about how lovely she looks and get asked were I've bought her outfit.

I'd rather see a flat chested 7 year old in a crop top than a teenager OP... And even then only because a teenager would get some sad cockwomble leering at her for wearing it.

You'd have had a dicky fit if you'd seen my 10 year old this afternoon - she managed to escape the house in a pair of shorts she's had since she was 7 (more arse hanging out than covered tbh). But you know what, I didn't care and neither did any of the other kids in the park. Admittedly I am now going to buy her some new shorts, but only because it was remiss of me not to realise she didn't have any.

AnnieLewis · 10/04/2015 18:03

Ahhhhhh - exactly what I needed for a friday night in - any cake left?

Philoslothy · 10/04/2015 18:03

OP what do you mean by chavvy?

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 18:03

My eldest DS wore nothing but pants and a Policeman's helmet for years

Stillwishihadabs · 10/04/2015 18:04

Oh and while we are throwing disparaging class specific insults about. I think the prudish prissiness you display is incredibly lower middle class (Hyacinth Bucket) .

Quitelikely · 10/04/2015 18:05

It's nice you get comments but maybe people think there is nothing else you prefer to discuss.

We can't all have your excellent taste in clothes y'know............

Hulababy · 10/04/2015 18:06

I think you are inappropriate for using the word "chavvy" especially when aimed at children.

And since when were cropped tops called "belly tops" - sounds horrible.

WorraLiberty · 10/04/2015 18:06

Well yes of course, but that's also her perception of her, as she loves going shopping for new clothes and she loves what I buy her. I also let comments all the time about how lovely she looks and get asked were I've bought her outfit.

And that's lovely.

However, some people may look at her and think she looks a state or even 'chavvy'. They may even go as far as starting a thread on a public forum about girls who dress like that.

Lots of individual people have individual perceptions about these things.

This is why it's best to keep your opinions on other people's chavs kid's clothes to yourself if you can't say anything nice.

Twoplus3 · 10/04/2015 18:06

I'm sorry but that's terrible! If my daughter came down dressed in a pair of shorts that didn't fit properly and didn't cover her bum then they'd go straight in the bin and she'd be asked to go back upstairs to change.

OP posts:
thornrose · 10/04/2015 18:06

Where do you buy her outfits? Just out of curiosity!

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 18:06

My youngest child has taken to dressing in cheap theatrical costumes like some kind of cheap actress -

TenerifeSea · 10/04/2015 18:07

"She's dressed tastefully, age appropriately and she's comfortable."

In your opinion.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/04/2015 18:07

My DS wears shorts in public - is he chavvy?

ghostyslovesheep · 10/04/2015 18:08

Twoplus3 please come back when she is 13 so we can all have a big old laugh Grin

you have no idea what's coming Grin

thornrose · 10/04/2015 18:09

they'd go straight in the bin and she'd be asked to go back upstairs to change.

Blimey that took me right back to the 80s, dad is that you? Grin

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/04/2015 18:09

Despite my best efforts with belts and adjustable waist elastic his pants are almost always on display Sad

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 10/04/2015 18:10

In the bin? How chavvy. We Freecycle.
