To wonder what perks people get?

I was told earlier that a couple I know were given money from the company he works for which was specifically to be used on a meal out as a reward. I was a bit shocked when I was told how much (I'm quite a modest wage earner, and quite frankly would be lucky to get a cup of tea and a biscuit out of my employer) and also this is not his first reward either. Just a bit curious what other perks people get really?

OP posts:

Loads of discounts on just about anything you can think of via rewards gateway website
Annual bonus
Super cheques or other monetary rewards when nominated
Tastecards for £30
Free fruit once a month
Wellbeing programme
Pension and private healthcare and life insurance plus other schemes you can opt into like cycle to work, critical care cover, etc.
Subsidised canteen in some buildings
Annual training budget towards professional qualifications
Paid holiday (more depending on grade and length of service)
Probably lots more I can't think of at the moment.

DuchessofNorks · 14/03/2015 13:26

Where do you people work???

I am job searching at the moment. Anyone want to nudge me in the direction of one of these generous employers? Wink

ragged · 14/03/2015 14:09

OP thought I meant free holidays but what I meant was free airfare sometimes to places that are nice to stay on a bit. So we get work trips to places like Amsterdam or Geneva (collaboration or conferences). That's the free foreign travel part.

I suspect the free tea+coffee is to do with hygiene, else there'd be 95 festering bottles of milk in the fridge.

Oceanography is the best science, btw, if your DC a science career traveling to the nicest places in the world, Oceanography all the way.

I do scientific research. DH is a web app developer.

sportinguista · 14/03/2015 15:51

Self employed so my perks are the freedom to work when I want to. Have a cup of tea when I like, wear what I want (clients can't see me), I listen to my music loud while I work, I can offset costs against tax, the variety of work I get to do is better than when I was employed, I don't have to get a packed lunch in the morning I can decide later, I don't have office politics or annoying competitive people and the biggest plus? I don't have to attend an office Christmas party! Grin

amymary · 14/03/2015 16:43

i always get tea when i want, 25% off the products, incentives that are always amazing :) i love my job and never leaving it x

Flowergirlmum · 14/03/2015 16:53

I'm a teacher- absolutely no perks, not even tea or coffee! Def in the wrong job!

GreatSoprendo · 14/03/2015 16:58

Free tea and coffee out of one off those crappy 'Klix' type machines. No other drinks facilities available so I drink tap water or take in a thermos. No others perks whatsoever. It's very motivating......

Girlsbrigadewashorrible · 14/03/2015 17:42

I work as an HLTA in a primary school. We have a tea club which is very cheap and includes biscuits. Parents regularly bring in treats for the staffroom. Occasionally I bring home leftover lunch from the canteen (not as gross as it sounds!) We also sit down to a free lunch with the children at Christmas time, with crackers and wine. I usually get a voucher from parents in December and July, which I really appreciate. I have been on some nice outings with the children over the years. I don't earn very much but I love my job and I feel valued, which is a perk for me.
DH earns lots more than me, and gets to travel abroad now and again. Sometimes clients send him gifts at Christmas, and he has a company car and healthcare, but these are heavily taxed. He loathes his job though.

CustardOmlet · 14/03/2015 17:45

No tea and coffee Sad but work iPad (negotiating iphone) and books/equipment that will enhance my role, free transport between work sites, fantastic training opportunities, all the usual HR perks of the NHS (pension, mat leave, sick pay) then the satisfaction of really enjoying my job and being thanked!

Onepot · 14/03/2015 21:02

custard you either work for a very good NHS trust or HR is the place to be in the NHS. As a clinician i now have to pay for any training and take annual leave for training (not mandatory training that is currently still paid for by NHS...but i suspect given current budgets that will change!).
I have to pay for parking, tea and coffee and black biros as we currently have an embargo on all stationery orders until 1st April! Constantly work over my hours...never get thanked for it as i tbh i think its just expected now!

BrianButterfield · 14/03/2015 22:10

I just remembered one! When I do canteen the duty I get a free teacake!

Creatureofthenight · 14/03/2015 22:15

Bloody hell Catgirl, where do you work?!

Crocodopolis · 14/03/2015 22:28

Water. We have to provide our own coffee, tea, milk etc.

TraceyTrickster · 14/03/2015 22:36

decent Twining teabags and a whizzy coffee machine for drinks at work, a box of fruit per week for the office.

I used to work for a major multinational and the perks were boundless- rewards for achieving xxx hours with no injuries, Christmas gifts, christmas party, extra leave for meeting targets, subsidized shop. No wonder they sold up and left the country!

ChameleonCircuit · 14/03/2015 22:50

Used to get:

Easter egg of our choice
Half day off for Christmas shopping
Turkey at Christmas
Wine at Christmas
Christmas dinner dance with overnight at a nice hotel
Annual bonus

Now.....I'm NHS. 'Nuff said.

flightywoman · 14/03/2015 23:13

Public sector, I'm trying to think.

Ummm...

I suppose I get parking, but it's out in the sticks and there aren't paid-for alternatives that I would have to use otherwise.

We provide our own tea/coffee/milk.

I generally provide my own pens as we are only allowed to order the really cheap ones from the contracted stationery supplier and they are rubbish.

But I do have family-friendly working hours and a flexible boss so that's quite good.

SandInMySandwiches · 14/03/2015 23:30

'Hahahahaha' laughed the NHS worker

toomuchtooold · 15/03/2015 06:29

We just moved country and DH had a relocation package which meant our moving costs were covered, tax advice, help finding a flat to rent... plus 3 months' rent paid and a lump sum to help with other moving costs. It's common in our industry and I've had it before when I moved from one country to another, although it is getting rarer. It's an odd thing. I hope I don't get flamed for posting this - if we got paid say 10% more a year that would be worth far more and nobody would bat an eyelid, but there's something rage-inducing about the idea that your company is taking care of all these details for you like some pampered pet. I felt a bit Hmm when the MPs' expenses scandal broke, there's no excuse for lying and stealing, but I remember one time DH got an expense package where they said "this is for incidental expenses in moving, if you just want to get a new bed or a cooker or whatever that's fine, keep the receipt and we'll pay for it." So even if you didn't actually need a new one because of moving, you could take advantage and fit out your house. How would that look, if the papers started investigating it?

pudseypie · 15/03/2015 07:34
