To wonder what perks people get?

I was told earlier that a couple I know were given money from the company he works for which was specifically to be used on a meal out as a reward. I was a bit shocked when I was told how much (I'm quite a modest wage earner, and quite frankly would be lucky to get a cup of tea and a biscuit out of my employer) and also this is not his first reward either. Just a bit curious what other perks people get really?

I work overseas as a teacher, I get:
Free lunches
Rent allowance
Private health insurance for whole family
Annual flights home for whole family
One month salary bonus when I sign a new yearly contract
Fancy meal out at the start and end of the year
2 Free school places at school for teacher's children from 3 years old

killthewiseone · 14/03/2015 05:57

DH has free food for lunch provided for him. They also have an all paid for staff jollie to the Alps once a year. Also Christmas meal and drinks all paid for. So long as the companies doing well they also get a generous bonus at Christmas. His boss has actually come out and rescued me when my car broke down, twice. He had a very nice boss.

Another teacher here, so not much apart from the free water and the odd bit of stationary/free photocopying.
But, like most teachers the reason we stay is the children - nothing like a "You're so clever/beautiful Mrs Lara" on a day when you're feeling (and looking) shite. Or just a hug or a snuggle when reading a story to year R. Or those lightbulb moments when they really, truly get something/achieve something.
Let's face it, it isn't the money, the non-existent pension or the Government support that makes the job fab (sometimes).

wheresthelight · 14/03/2015 06:48

The City

Free tea, coffee from a fancy machine, fruit bowl
Pension contributions of 5 - 20% based on tenure/age
27 days holiday
Private medical insurance & life assurance
Interest free travel card loan
6 months full pay for maternity leave
Bonus - can be a very significant percentage of salary
Lots of staff events: 6 yearly with free flowing booze

Having said that, I work long hours and it's quite a stressful environment.

ErinBlockerBitch · 14/03/2015 06:57

Free flu jab

Enjoyingmycoffee1981 · 14/03/2015 07:03

DH works in the City.

The perks are phenomenal.

The best though...
This year he will receive a £52,500 bonus.

SteveBrucesNose · 14/03/2015 07:11

I'm overseas so the usual expat package of medical insurance, school fees for up to 3 kids (which I don't need), annual flight home, rent allowance.

Other than that, which is law, I get the ability to work 30 hours overtime in 2 weeks and still get bollocked for the couple of things still on my desk that I haven't closed our.

They also bought us a team nespresso machine - supply your own capsules though

And i get to go on site visits which involve full days out if the office and get salary deducted for not being in work, despite having used my own car and petrol to travel around 600miles in a day.

Onecurrantbun · 14/03/2015 07:16

DH works for a FTSE100 company and they get flexitime, an extra day off after most bank holidays, 28 day holiday, a shares saving scheme, ad hoc bonuses plus annual bonus depending on how well the company does, cycle to work scheme, plus discounts through something called Eden?? on a range of things from meals out to groceries and appliances. He's on to a good thing I think!

Onecurrantbun · 14/03/2015 07:18

Not as good as enjoyingmycoffee DH though, although forgot to say DH does get free squash.

sPJPPp · 14/03/2015 07:21

Discount of 20% of our own products, Xmas party, summer party, performance related bonus (10-25% depending on how the company is doing), coffee from an Bea to cup machine (although the beans are low quality), a days extra holiday for each years service (up to 5 days) pension where they contribute 8%, free gym membership (although its a gym so no pool sawna / steam), health cover meaning I can claim back 100s each year in health costs (120 dental, 50 chiropody, 6 prescription charges), regular treats - like they booked a chef on pankcake day to make us all pancakes and hired out a cinema for the night for staff, wages have always gone up every year as the company is doing well, have managed to get them to pay for several courses and the hotel and transport.

Ah I needed this after a crappy week at work!

Free tea and coffee, free lunch at the private school where I work. At the state school - bugger all.

ProfYaffle · 14/03/2015 09:14

dh has a great perk. His company's head office is in the middle of The City, they have a suite of hotel rooms in there because it's an international company and they need to accommodate clients and employees travelling from abroad.

Employees get to stay at weekends, for £55 we get a family room in central London with free parking thrown in.

smileyfacechocolatebutton · 14/03/2015 09:18

Magmatic 80 where do you work? I am so jealous, we get nothing apart from tap water!

I work in the voluntary sector as we get nothing, rightly so as any money we get has to be spent directly delivering services to the community.

We have to pay £3.50 each money to purchase tea, coffee, milk etc.......I'm sure I get my money's worth there as I am a prolific drinker of strong black coffee.

However I do get some fab perks when I am visiting people in their home, I'm a respite coordinator, I've had entire buffets and cream teas ready for me when I arrived at some homes. I often get sent beautiful thank you cards, flowers and chocolates from people I have helped. These go a long way to making me very happy in my job despite the meagre pay and lack of long term security Smile

GingerPhoenix · 14/03/2015 09:40

13 weeks holiday a year, unlimited job satisfaction, short working hours, being told constantly that I am the best ever and they love me, lots of smiles, three afternoons a week off and free biscuits and cakes frequently.

AnnieThePianist · 14/03/2015 09:41

Annual bonus (around 15% of salary)

Free qualifications - I've done an NVQ Level 3 and an Apprenticeship over the past 3 years

Free hot drinks

Free massages at work

An annual company awards ceremony in London, free hotel/travel and free bar

Multiple discounts with various retailers...including Merlin attractions and other days out. Also get much cheaper company tickets for sport/musicals/bands etc

AnnieThePianist · 14/03/2015 09:45

Oh and...8% pension controbution and Bupa medical cover

NotGoingOut17 · 14/03/2015 09:48

Civil Servant - don't get the perks of big bonuses, gifts from clients or free meals etc but we do have a lot of perks that to me, provide some kind of security.

Fantastic pension - employer contributes something like 18%
Generous annual leave - including days off for Queen's bday etc it will be 32.5 days at 10 years service
Maternity/adoption leave of full pay for 6 months
If I was sick I'd get full sick pay for 6 and half pay for another 6 so provides a lot of peace of mind
Access to thousands of jobs over the country - love the idea that if i fancy a change that I can apply for other jobs without leaving the CS including having a change in career. Likewise if I wanted to move location within the UK, I wouldn't necessarily have to worry about leaving employment as could request a transfer
Flexi time - I probably take this for granted as am so used to it, but I would struggle to work somewhere with rigid times again (apppreciate not all civil servants can use flexi time to the full)

In addition we have access to free counselling services, legal and debt advice.

NotSayingImBatman · 14/03/2015 09:48

A 20% pay cut and constant threat of redundancy.

ilovesooty · 14/03/2015 09:55

Free tea and coffee.
Access to 6 sessions of counselling.
Everyone except managers got a £250 voucher last Christmas, but that was to compensate for the lack of pay rise for many years.
High quality training.
Can buy up to 5 days additional leave - I get 32 days plus bank holidays.

To me the biggest perk is a wonderful ethos where everyone is valued, fantastic colleagues, approachable and honest managers and being able to work without bullying or fear. That's priceless.

BerniceBroadside · 14/03/2015 10:26

Private sector and cock all, really. Well, free tea and coffee, and a bonus scheme, but nothing out of the ordinary.

I once got a free bacon sandwich. I think of it fondly.
