To wonder what perks people get?

I was told earlier that a couple I know were given money from the company he works for which was specifically to be used on a meal out as a reward. I was a bit shocked when I was told how much (I'm quite a modest wage earner, and quite frankly would be lucky to get a cup of tea and a biscuit out of my employer) and also this is not his first reward either. Just a bit curious what other perks people get really?

I work in a City law firm. We get a (modest, performance-related) bonus if we bill more than 1700 hours a year (that's the amount we actually bill though, a lot of what we do is not billable). So basically an overtime payment!

We also get a free canteen dinner if we work past 7.30pm (often) and a cab ride home if we work after 9pm (often). There's free tea and coffee!

Also, a private pension with matched contributions up to a 7% limit, life and medical insurance, 27 days' paid holiday. There are other 'options' to add to your package (like spouse insurance, dental, childcare vouchers, gym membership) but you have to pay for them.

My training (two years' law school fees) was also paid for, and we have regular training sessions in the office.

Not bad at all, plus the salary is comparatively good.

Free tap water and regular redundancies [bitter]. That's academic life for you.

xiaozhu · 13/03/2015 11:46

Oh, I forgot, we get half a day off extra on Xmas eve, and there are one or two parties per year (summer and Xmas) which are paid for.

*Tea / coffee
*The governors have agreed to pay for teachers to have a school lunch on Parents' Eve days - not a big thing but does make us feel valued
*School holidays - I know we don't get paid for them but they still feel like a bit of a perk

Other than that, as a pp said - the perk of taking in a load of stationery / bits and bobs from home to shore up the school budget a bit Grin

fredfredsausagehead1 · 13/03/2015 12:20

Company car
Fuel
Meals out
Health insurance for the whole family
Bonuses
Tickets to sports events

Sazzle41 · 13/03/2015 12:26

Oh forgot laptop (on top of free ice cream, fruit, free tea/fresh coffee/hot choc & 50% discount on every brand we market in Staff shop).

Discount on local gym & hair salon and staff discount card for Debenhams/TM Lewin/J Lewis/ D Perkins/Hobbs (cant remember others but includes most high street stores). Weekly Friday free team lunch or cakes from local posh patisserie (Boss pays). But long hours, often/usually manic so probably a good job the perks are generous.

ElspethTascioni · 13/03/2015 12:31

Self-employed so no perks with any pecuniary value, but getting to telephone conferences in your jim-jams with the cat on your knee? Priceless!

JillyR2015 · 13/03/2015 12:33

Zilch as work for myself but it has its compensation not least of which you can earn a lot of money and keep it!

lertgush · 13/03/2015 12:39

I'm a SAHM but I get to use DH's benefits. The latest is a trip to Florida for the family that's costing us about $50.

I'm sure someone will be along in a minute to tell me I'm an embarrassment to feminism for not going out and earning my own free trips to Florida :-)

IKnowRight · 13/03/2015 12:45

DH & I both work in an industry which has no spare money these days

I get:
Childcare vouchers
Subsidised (but largely crap) canteen
10 voucher at Christmas
Free Christmas meal at above canteen in December
Occasional lunch paid for if off site on worky stuff

DH
Childcare vouchers
Car & petrol card (heavily taxed tho) - he does legitimately need the car to do his job
100 bonus (taxed) for working an extra day in the run up to Christmas
25 voucher at Christmas
He's just completed 10 years so will get 100 for that

that's all folks

Boysclothes · 13/03/2015 12:57

I used to work for a company who organised corporate travel. So we'd be hired by companies in the US to organise a reward trip for 100 of their employees, say.

The budget for this was AMAZING. Think five nights in the Langham or similar for 100 people. Cocktail party at the NHM on the first night. River tours, lunches, shopping days for spouses, walking tours followed by dinner in the ivy or similar, spa days, race days at silverstone, etc etc. Just endless activities laid on, hundreds of thousands being spent. Loved it!

I remember one company wanted to fly their employees over in private jets and the only place we could find for them to land was Northolt. I was explaining this to an unhappy American CEO who wanted to fly into London until my boss hissed at me "Princess Diana!" I then sorrowfully explained of course we would get him into London, but we'd thought flying into somewhere "exclusive" like Northolt would have appealed more, it being the airport the royals used, and the security had really been upgraded since Princess Diana had to be flown home their from Paris.... Of course then he couldn't wait to fly in to Northolt. We were shameless!

scotchfreeescapegoat · 13/03/2015 13:40

Half Day at Xmas & Easter. Xmas party + team/department Xmas party. Kids Xmas party. Annual Bonus. Interest Free loan for travelcard/season tickets. Corporate discount at loads of retailers if i show my work id. Free gym membership. Free private health, death and sickness/accident insurance.

all the coffee, tea etc i can drink (though it is vile).
Quite a bit of business travel, of which i get to keep the airmiles.
Lots of lunches and dinners out with clients and service providers (not strictly a perk but still nice to do mostly).

GreenShadow · 13/03/2015 15:19

I came on to say nothing, but thinking about it, I may not have any financial perks as such, but there are definitely several benefits which is why I'm still there after many more years than I had expected when I took the job on:

I wear what I want (so in my case very casual clothes),
5 minutes drive from home (and free parking right by the office) or half an hours walk through an AONB
Pleasant company if my colleague is in the office, if not I work alone, which I am also happy with.
Working hours also offer some degree of flexibility which I consider a massive perk
Pension contributions.

But no freebies (not even tea or coffee or Christmas lunch), bonuses, cars or gym membership etc.

bluebeanie · 13/03/2015 15:31

Good pension, death in service, child care vouchers, interest free travel loan, students' union discount card available to staff, annual salary increase on top of inflation increase, unpaid sabbaticals up to 2 years, 26 days holiday, plus bank holidays and approx 5 days paid closure days at Xmas, £15 towards Xmas meal, 6 months full pay maternity. I work in a university.

I'm jealous of annual bonuses and major discounts - my friend works for Waitrose - same perks as JL.

HemlockStarglimmer · 13/03/2015 15:46

I was a dental nurse/receptionist and I was going to say nothing as well but thinking back, not having to pay for dental treatment is a perk worth having.

Otherwise we got a small cash bonus and a meal at Christmas, and hot drinks provided. We didn't always have time to drink them but they were there and the chair-side staff in surgeries had their drinks made for them (usually by me).

Didn't have to buy a toothbrush or paste for twenty two years either - that was down to the reps who called in.

I also got 50% discount on private orthodontic treatment from my last employer.

marcopront · 13/03/2015 15:53

Free accommodation with electric, telephone and internet bills paid
Free education for my DD
Medical insurance for both of us
Flights to the UK once a year
Free Tea, coffee and biscuits
Christmas Party and end of term party.

lolbeansansalad · 13/03/2015 17:47

I have worked at my company for over 10 years and it has been very jammy up till now -

Final salary pension
Life insurance
Free lunch every day, with a wide range of choices
Annual performance related bonus (for me 21% of salary this year, normally more like 15%)
On site subsidised childcare in outstanding setting
Flexible working
On site gym and on site squash courts with exercise classes too
Dinner dance in 5 star hotel
Xmas do
Children's xmas parties
Summer BBQ
Company owned hotels for exclusive use by staff, holds all sorts of events, children's fun days, summer clubs and so on
BUPA
Childcare vouchers
Company has own travel agent that will help you out wherever you are in the world
Free tea/coffee/fruit/biscuits
6 months maternity leave on full pay
33 days holidays per year
Gifts when reaching milestones with company plus extra days leave
Company credit cards to be used for expenses, including 'entertainment' ie team drinks, also can be used for personal emergencies which will then be deducted from salary
Share scheme

I say up until now, as quite a few of the above benefits are being reviewed due to difficult times in the industry. Still, it was good while it lasted!

Binkybix · 13/03/2015 17:49

I get quite a few standard ones but best one was when ex boss, who used to be senior in an airline, arranged for me and DH to be upgraded on a holiday when we were flying with his old company.

manchestermummy · 13/03/2015 18:04

Water. In a cooler, mind you.

We got a flu shot one year.

Generous leave though, and manager who is very understanding about things like poorly children etc. I treat this as a perk as it's made my life so much easier. I give as much as I take iyswim.
