DD1 has recently befriended a new girl at her gymnastics classes. She has a brother the same age as DS1 so we invited them around for dinner last weekend.

I have a small hobby that involves me making clothes for my younger DC out of vintage clothes patterns. DD1 happened to be wearing a pale blue smocked dress and DD2 was wearing a pale pink one in a similar design. She asked wear I got these "delightful dresses" from and I told her that I had made them. She then replied with these exact words. "That's a little bit pretentious if you ask me". Then continued talking as if nothing happened. As the night continued, she made snide remarks at certain things. I could have forgiven her if she'd left it at that.

The next gymnastics lesson came and as you do, I was sat on the toilet when I heard her talking about me to another woman saying stuff like. "They were wearing the most hideous dresses that she brought upon herself to make" and "Who actually eats lobster in this day in age". The last one made did it for me. "The size of the house was so large, it looked like Hogwarts had come to life- bet the husband sells drugs." I burst out of the toilet and she saw me, gulped and took off like a five year old, leaving the other lady behind to look all flustered. I was so astounded that any adult would say that. I have no idea what to do. DH has laughed about it and told me she is pathetic, but we are going to a special class tonight when they open the gym up and let you do whatever, and I know she's going to be there. What the hell should I do???

LaurieFairyCake · 19/02/2015 17:12

Ignore her. Look amused. If she's going to call you a snotty Rich cow you're really going to have to try hard to look down your nose at her Wink

Can you try wrinkling it as if she's farted every time you see her?

bumbleymummy · 19/02/2015 17:12

Lol. Silly woman. So glad that you caught her out. It sounds like she's jealous. I would just carry on being your lovely self and let her squirm uncomfortably about what she's said.

( I'm v jealous of your dress making ability by the way! :) )

I also want to see a picture of your mustbeownedbyadrugdealer house

ohbollocks2u · 19/02/2015 17:13

Definitely confront her. Couldn't your DH get in trouble if she goes around saying he sells drugs? But I agree with him wholeheartedly, she is pathetic and there is no need to engage with her for long, just let her hear you out and then walk away. But try not to cause too much of a scene as obviously, there will be children around! This lady sounds like she has real cheek and personally, I am bemused that anyone would say stuff like that. Then again, the world is full of horrid people.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 19/02/2015 17:14

"That's a little bit pretentious if you ask me"

Cheeky cow.

It is boasty but hell, why not Grin.

I love lobster.

Is your house massive?

Dontstepinthecowpat · 19/02/2015 17:14

Get DH to go to class tonight and ask her if he can get anything for her Wink

Vintage style home made dresses. Lobster. Huge house. Yup that's great stealth boasting Grin

Who was making the comments OP - the kids mum or the daughter? Not clear from your post although im assuming it was the mum.

cookiefiend · 19/02/2015 17:15

I know this is the kind of thing your mum says when you are picked on in school, but she really does sound jealous. Especially the comment about your big house- is that ever viewed as a bad thing. I obviously wouldn't invie Her back, but do not be intimidated by her when she is so clearly intimidated by you.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 19/02/2015 17:16

What's the special event at gym where you can do 'whatever'.

Alexaa · 19/02/2015 17:16

bumbleymummy the house isn't a mansion or anything, which is why I'm very confused. I guess she must live in quite a small house??

She sounds jealous, as am I. Just ignore her-she is rude with poor taste.

CaptainAnkles · 19/02/2015 17:21

If any of that's true, yes she was bloody rude and jealous too.
I'm off to polish my diamond shoes and put the unicorn in his stable for the night.

bumbleymummy · 19/02/2015 17:21

It doesn't look like this one then? Grin

to not want to speak to this lady again?
Alexaa · 19/02/2015 17:22

They do it at most gyms I think but it's when the company or whoever owns it opens the gym at different time periods so that the children can have free-time on the stuff. E.g go on the tumble track without being told what to do on it, use the trampolines, bars, vaults, beams and practise their own stuff. Really fun ton watch the kids doing it as well. They've only just started doing it at our gym so all the girls from their class wanted to go tonight. StillStayingClassySanDiego

What a nasty cow bag! How dare she bitch about you when you were so nice to welcome them over for a meal?

I assume it was the mother who said this, not the daughter?

If it was the daughter then I'd laugh it off, but if it was the mother then you could either avoid her like the plague, or be OTT friendly with her and watch the worm squirm Grin

Alexaa · 19/02/2015 17:23

Haha no not quite, possibly a fiftieth of the size- at least bumbleymummy
