DD1 has recently befriended a new girl at her gymnastics classes. She has a brother the same age as DS1 so we invited them around for dinner last weekend.

I have a small hobby that involves me making clothes for my younger DC out of vintage clothes patterns. DD1 happened to be wearing a pale blue smocked dress and DD2 was wearing a pale pink one in a similar design. She asked wear I got these "delightful dresses" from and I told her that I had made them. She then replied with these exact words. "That's a little bit pretentious if you ask me". Then continued talking as if nothing happened. As the night continued, she made snide remarks at certain things. I could have forgiven her if she'd left it at that.

The next gymnastics lesson came and as you do, I was sat on the toilet when I heard her talking about me to another woman saying stuff like. "They were wearing the most hideous dresses that she brought upon herself to make" and "Who actually eats lobster in this day in age". The last one made did it for me. "The size of the house was so large, it looked like Hogwarts had come to life- bet the husband sells drugs." I burst out of the toilet and she saw me, gulped and took off like a five year old, leaving the other lady behind to look all flustered. I was so astounded that any adult would say that. I have no idea what to do. DH has laughed about it and told me she is pathetic, but we are going to a special class tonight when they open the gym up and let you do whatever, and I know she's going to be there. What the hell should I do???

Glad you dealt with it so well. Looks like she can pick on some other poor lady!! Also, so confused at any lady's post about you being middle class- I assumed you were just normal. Plus, I absolutely hate that term that quite a few people use on here!!!

Alexaa I guess some people just can't do sewing so don't like those who can?

But if this makes sewing "pretentious", then surely the same principle would apply to cooking, gardening, growing vegetables, knitting, fixing a washing machine, filling a knock in the wall with plaster, or all manner of skills that some people can do but others find tricky?

It means, if you take it to the logical conclusion, that almost every activity in the world is pretentious.

I mean, where does the human race go from there? Oh, don't possibly learn to do something and grow to excel at it because it might offend someone somewhere? Oh, I can't possibly darn this sock because Mrs Miggins from Number 33 might get annoyed? Oh, I can't even think about fixing this incredibly important valve that controls outflow for this strategically-vital power station because Timmy from down the road can't use a screwdriver?

I tell you something Alexaa, that woman won't be so willing to fling around opinions like that after the apocalyse and she wants to barter something with you in exchange for a "pretentiously-created" woman's blouse made out of old curtains.

Then it will all be "Oh, Alexaa, you are so marvellous at sewing. Oh, Alexaa, do have some of my freshly-baked buns! Oh, Alexaa, do you need someone to reorganise your sewing needles? Oh, Alexaa, I will go round your floor on my hands and knees with a magnet and pick up all your stray dressing-making pins."

Ach ... you mark my words. Wink

I'm not commenting on it being gramatically incorrect in and of itself, I'm saying that I find it hard to believe anyone would talk like that. Does she have english as a second language?

Tinklypink · 20/02/2015 20:14

Ooooh could you have a little thread about how difficult these patterns are and where you get them pleeeeeassseee.

I saw the Walkaway dress on Sewing Bee last night and want to have a go but I am not sure my (very) amateur skills are up to it...

I like lobster too

misses the point completely

Harrietsferrets · 20/02/2015 21:02

I didn't see the episode but if the walkaway dress is the one that fastens up the front I made one last year and it took about three hours. V comfy and looks fab on.

BOFster · 20/02/2015 22:01

Walkaway dress.

Asknotaboutthebell · 20/02/2015 22:08

Have no useful advice but I'd love to see a photo of the girls' dresses -they sound gorgeous Smile

TheRollingCrone · 20/02/2015 22:18

Just tell her your DH is a drugs Baron.

I also would love to see the dresses.

Tinklypink · 20/02/2015 22:27

Hi op. Can hardly believe that awful woman how really horrible for you. But remember she is the one cringing now. Her remarks will be going round like a loop in her head. I expect she's hardly slept a wink. I'd be inclined to say something when you bump into her next "oh hi again. I'm sorry that you found my home, girls' dresses and lobster so offensive I do hope you're over the shock oh and if you need some drugs...". Nice toothy grin. She is eaten up with jealousy and hates herself. Carry on being you.
