Because people who are currently young-ish adults (MN's main demographic?), and younger, will be paying for the lavish lifestyle they've enjoyed?
The money borrowed for their nice big pensions will be paid back by us and our children.

Does this mean they shouldn't spend so much time in Tenerife?

NB Mumsnet babyboomers are clearly exempt. Grin

goady much Hmm

not all pensioners have a lavish lifestyle - lots are on basic pensions and can't heat their homes

Bluepants · 08/02/2015 17:36

I think that's a bitter attitude. What would you do about it? Nothing to be done - look forwards with a better attitude.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:37

not all pensioners have a lavish lifestyle
True, but many do. And way better than we're likely to have.

OP posts:
tumbletumble · 08/02/2015 17:37

Are you referring to state pension or company pensions? Either way, the money wasn't 'borrowed'.

ghostyslovesheep · 08/02/2015 17:38

lots of millionaires have a better lifestyle than I will likely have Hmm

Holdthepage · 08/02/2015 17:38

No I just get pissed off at posters starting vile threads aimed at a whole demographic who had no choice over when they were born.

newrecruit · 08/02/2015 17:38

I'm not pissed off with them. They've made the best of a situation which you can't blame them for.

I do get pissed off when they think it's all down to their hard work, and not a housing boom, favourable pensions and politicians permanently focussing on winning their votes.

With a lot of luck thrown in.

The whole 'we've worked all our lives and now deserve this' is entitled nonsense.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:39

What would you do about it?

There are possible money system reforms which might stop the cycle.
Short of that, I don't really know.

Don't intend to be goady or bitter, exactly, just wondered if anyone was angry about this. I'm not particularly, as it happens.

OP posts:
Bluepants · 08/02/2015 17:40

OP do you think we should line them up and shoot them or something? Your post is extremely bizarre.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:40

Yes, newrecruit. I agree.

Sorry you feel that way. I think it's an interesting topic, myself.

Floggingmolly · 08/02/2015 17:41

Why would whole swathes of people be angry about this?? Confused

Bambambini · 08/02/2015 17:42

Envy isn't nice and they are not all living it up with holiday homes in France and world cruises (though the ones I know seem to). Was just the luck of the draw. You've got it better than those born round WW2 era - maybe they look at you and think how easy you have it from their hard work and hard times. Or folk in the third world looking at our life of comparative luxury and ease - want to swap with them?

YaTalkinToMe · 08/02/2015 17:42

Nope not at all.
I can not control it, being pissed off with it wont change it, so put my energy into things I can control and try and better things for me and my family.

TeWiSavesTheDay · 08/02/2015 17:42

eh... Kind of yes kind of no.

I don't think the way things currently are is fair and I think there should be change, but that is government's job - to do the potentially unpopular but right thing - not the general public. I don't blame anyone for profiting from good fortune. I think that's quite an odd and unbalanced attitude to have.

I sometimes get annoyed with specific baby boomers and the 'you could have a massive house if you worked hard too!' attitude. No we can't, things are completely different, but thanks for assuming we're lazy...

Baby boomers who are poor are pretty hard done by too.

wowfudge · 08/02/2015 17:42

No: they are my parents. Who worked hard and paid into their pensions. Why the hell shouldn't they enjoy retirement? Their lifestyle is hardly lavish either.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:42

Are you referring to state pension or company pensions? Either way, the money wasn't 'borrowed'.

Yes, it was.

OP posts:
ghostyslovesheep · 08/02/2015 17:45

my mothers 'lavish' lifestyle is paid for via two pensions she paid in to - her money invested

I don't begrudge her one tiny bit

Pensioners are not the enemy

demystified · 08/02/2015 17:45

They are the first generation to make things worse for their children.

PoppySausage · 08/02/2015 17:46

Newrecruit - agree

My grandparents saved 80% of their wages and could never understand why we couldn't do the same.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:48

I'm interested in how much the idea that the previous generation had it easier (whilst inadvertently making it worse for us) makes "our" generation feel angry with them.
Clearly it's only of any use if it makes us change things for the better. But sometimes people feel anger which is irrational or not of much use. It's what humans do.

OP posts:
Toooldtobearsed · 08/02/2015 17:49

Damfine you might think it is interesting. It was..... the first fifty seven times, then the novelty wore off.

Is this like bingo? We have the baby boomer thread, now we need a MiL, DC party invitation, parking nightmares and benefit basher to get a full House.

BTW, the answer is, there is no answer.

lanbro · 08/02/2015 17:50

I'm not angry at all. My parents loaned us money to start our own business, we will stand to inherit a good amount from both sides and we'll be well off in our own right, through a bit of luck and a lot of hard work.

TheXxed · 08/02/2015 17:51

It bothers me that many in their position don't understand that its hasn't been paid for by their tax contributions. The fact is its being paid for by borrowing which future generations have to pay for but wont have the services.

I also get annoyed at how irate people are that they should have to pay towards their care.
