Because people who are currently young-ish adults (MN's main demographic?), and younger, will be paying for the lavish lifestyle they've enjoyed?
The money borrowed for their nice big pensions will be paid back by us and our children.

Does this mean they shouldn't spend so much time in Tenerife?

OneHandFlapping · 08/02/2015 17:51

Oh God. Not this again!

Boomers are just people, living their lives the best they can, and taking advantage of opportunities that come their way like we all do.

Pillorying them will not improve the lot of young people one jot. Why not come up with some actual policy suggestions, instead of this stupid selfish boomers bollocks?

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:52

Damfine you might think it is interesting. It was..... the first fifty seven times, then the novelty wore off.

Oh, we've discussed it BEFORE have we? Well then clearly we never should again. That's how conversation works, silly me.

divide and conquer thats the way our government work.
and suckers like the op fall for it

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:53

Yes, TheXxed. This.

OP posts:
bakingaddict · 08/02/2015 17:54

Not really...I haven't got anything against them. They happened to live through a period of time that was beneficial for them. It's not like they had any direct control over these events and to say that people shouldn't take advantage or enjoy things like a favourable economy or house prices is deluded.

Not all baby boomers have 2nd homes in Spain because ultimately individual circumstances dictate your lifestyle not being born in a specific era.

Unescorted · 08/02/2015 17:54

No - some took advantage of the economic conditions they were born into. Others didn't / couldn't. I am annoyed at lazy thinking that doesn't differentiate between people eg free bus passes and cold weather payments etc. for all or being pissed off with baby boomers as a homogeneous mass.

I admire the baby boomers who have changed all our lives for the better - and am glad that they showed us what was possible. Computers, internet, mobiles, green movement, political dissent, contraceptive, - all the work of baby boomer generation. They have given us a voice. Yes I am thankful that they stood up and did, as I am only standing on their shoulders.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:54

If we don't realise and discuss it, we're much more likely to keep screwing our own children over in turn.

OP posts:
DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:55

I am only standing on their shoulders.

Maybe. But you're also standing under their stamping boots. Grin

Yes but your title asks are we pissed off with baby boomers. Not really resembling your last post which is slightly more balanced.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:56

samcro, interesting. Can you tell me more about how this works, please?

MIL recently sent extended email from her month long jaunt to tenerife (7th foreign hol in last 12 months). Moaning about the etiquette of tipping, asking whether to tip every day or just one big tip at end of holiday. My heart truly went out to her having such difficult decisions to make. She's a boomer. I'm not bitter. Much.

DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 17:58

Yes but your title asks are we pissed off with baby boomers. Not really resembling your last post which is slightly more balanced.

I don't agree. My OP was giving the reasons we might be pissed off. I never even said that I was.

OP posts:
DamFineBeaver · 08/02/2015 18:00

Obviously this is based on generalities. It's the money system which, at bottom, is in the process of screwing people over, not your particular mum.

Ubik1 · 08/02/2015 18:00

I don't begrudge my own parents.

I think my generation (I am 40) is very meek. I think we are failing our children by not standing up fir ourselves, not voting, not demanding better. We can't quite believe that life won't get better. There has always been a safety net. It will be a shock when I am 70 and there is nothing left for me.

ghostyslovesheep · 08/02/2015 18:01

Not all babyboomers have lavish lifestyles by any means - it is strange that this myth is taking hold, just because a subset are well off exactly - I find it strange

I make my own way in the world - I don't expect anyone to make if for me

engeika · 08/02/2015 18:01

Not again.

To accompany this "What about the Baby Boomers " thread let's have a list - get them all in:
1 a racist - "what about the immigrants taking all our jobs" thread
2 a "what about the benefits claimants milking the system" thread
3 a "what about the teenagers lazing about and not doing any work" thread
4 an "all men are bastards" thread
5 " all SAHMs should bloody work and all WOHMs don't love their kids enough
and
5 a "what about all those disabled who could really work" thread.
Have we missed any out?

This only shows how stupid the OP is and should be deleted

TartinaTiara · 08/02/2015 18:03

Yes, OP, I'm pissed off at baby boomers. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to vent.

I'm pissed off with one of them because he called me fat the other night. I'm pissed off with another because he's never paid any child support, and I'm pissed off with a third because she stuck a thermometer up my cat's arse. Oh, actually, I think I'll let her off with that one (though I doubt the cat ever will) because she's a vet, and the cat's got a high temperature. But the first two fuckers, they're dead to me.

And actually the first one is gay. Can I be pissed off with gay people? And both of the first two are from Yorkshire. Fucking Yorkshiremen.

The rest of the baby boomer generation, I'm not particularly pissed off with. Unless and until they do something to piss me off.

Again, I can only offer my profuse apologies to all those who clearly already have all the answers, and are so bored that they can't help posting.

OP posts:
DidoTheDodo · 08/02/2015 18:06

Oh not this again.... Every week we have at least one thread telling us how very rich baby boomers are.
Why pick on a whole demographic? You don't get baby boomers moaning about tax credits and enhanced maternity benefits and all the other stuff they didn't get... Yawn.

Ubik1 · 08/02/2015 18:06

It's a valid perspective

I don't think it should be deleted.Confused

paxtecum · 08/02/2015 18:07

I have friends who are retired from the NHS and friends who work in education. They have paid a substantial part of their salary into their pension funds all their working lives , ie over 40 years each.

They had no choice. The money was taken off them every month.
Why should they now not receive a pension?

newrecruit I agree. My parents' generation don't seem to realise that a lot of it was down to luck, rather than anything else. I work hard, and save hard. I earn more than both my parents did. I still won't be able to buy a house before I'm 30.

grimbletart · 08/02/2015 18:08

No I am not pissed off with baby boomers. What pisses me off is goady fuckers who keep starting threads on this, as if no generation ever has had it as bad as the under 40s today.

News flash. It is not true.

No, I am not a baby boomer by the way being a World War 2 baby who retired last year at the age of 70, and one of the generation who got women towards equal pay, maternity pay, the end of needing male guarantors for loans and mortgages, the end of being sacked for getting married or having a baby, the right to go to law over harassment or discrimination, better career openings for women, towards university education for over 40% of the population instead of 8%……….yada yada yada

I won't go on but FFS these endless goady threads make me angry.
