Booing God Save Our Gracious Queen

I've sung Gwlad, Gwlad, etc in Welsh, (easier to sing yn Gymreig than write, [is that mutation correct?]), but was disgusted to hear the boos for God Save the Queen.
I love Wales & feel really proud to have my Mynediad Welsh certificate, but this hatred of the British national anthem. Really? Is it necessary?

I HOPE the ref is French and that's a whole other can of worms but he's doing a decent job, I think!

The booing was utterly shameful and disgraceful. Not to mention ignorant since it is also the British national anthem and therefore an anthem of Wales. And I say this as someone who is part Welsh. Awful behaviour. In the interests of fairness, I suspect some booing was taking place during the Welsh anthem too.

Agree with the idea of LOHAG as the English anthem. Jerusalem is good too.

CalicoBlue · 06/02/2015 20:59

There is no hatred, it is all with good humour. The English National Anthem is British, so it is ours too. Cymru am byth!

nannynome · 06/02/2015 20:59

16-8 :D yay. I lived in Liverpool for a while too Frances :) if we are going on blatant being rude about nationalities we might as well target the french ref too (that's tongue in cheek before anyone jumps on me) Smile

MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 21:01

Okay, I'm happy to go with lohag and boo everything else.

May be frowned upon in certain circumstances, but I'll just print on pass out this thread.

FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:01

Yes, welsh nationals are amusing apparently. I can guarantee we aren't so keen on our English nationalists

Plaid Cymru's goals as set out in its constitution are:

To promote the constitutional advancement of Wales with a view to attaining independence within the European Union;

To ensure economic prosperity, social justice and the health of the natural environment, based on decentralist socialism;

To build a national community based on equal citizenship, respect for different traditions and cultures and the equal worth of all individuals, whatever their race, nationality, gender, colour, creed, sexuality, age, ability or social background;

To create a bilingual society by promoting the revival of the Welsh language;

To promote Wales's contribution to the global community and to attain membership of the United Nations.

Welsh nationalism isn't about setting fire to holiday homes Confused

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 21:02

I love rygbi, I'm English & proud of it & I love Wales, but the booing of the anthem was out of order. If it had been football I'd have expected it, but I expect more of rugby fans somehow.

OP posts:
MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 21:02

Calico, booing is never in good spirit. Hmm

TidyDancer · 06/02/2015 21:03

Agree Mutton. That was not what I'd think of as "good humour". I've witnessed it in person and it's unpleasant.

MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 21:04

Okay fight, that sounds like nationalism to me, which I'm uncomfortable with, because whatever you say about inclusion, it's not.

Bowing out of this thread, I'm taking it too seriously. Sad

frankie001 · 06/02/2015 21:05

Sitting in a room of Wales supporters who agreed it was a poor show to boo the anthem.
Hope England wake up for the second half, has felt quite messy so far. Wales deserve to be in front!

Gruntfuttock · 06/02/2015 21:07

OK, I'm the only one who didn't know what the thread was about, so now I'd like to know (seriously), on a scale of one to ten, how stupid was I not to know it was about Rugby? Was there a clue in the OP that I didn't pick up on?

CalicoBlue · 06/02/2015 21:08

My Dh goes to the home matches and he says it is all friendly with English and Welsh standing and singing together. It is also the old adversity, they each boo the others song.

FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:10

I think what Calico was referring to was the intense rugby rivalry between Wales and England. It's a grand tradition and one that is usually embraced in the right spirit. Booing an anthem is wrong whichever nation is doing it.

chipsandpeas · 06/02/2015 21:10

to solve the problem england need a anthem of their own

as much as i hate gstq in general.....it is the british national anthem so i dont think england should use it as it own

altho i have never booed it in public (usually mute it when on telly), i cant rule out never booing it

crazypenguin · 06/02/2015 21:11

Yep, I agree booing is totally unacceptable.
I was lucky enough to attend the Scotland vs England match at Murrayfield last year. Flower of Scotland was unbelievable. It was so rousing! I love the Scots. They know how to party. ??

crazypenguin · 06/02/2015 21:13

YES!!! (Sorry neighbors...Grin)

FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:13

Jeez Mutton what part of this makes you uncomfortable:

"To build a national community based on equal citizenship, respect for different traditions and cultures and the equal worth of all individuals, whatever their race, nationality, gender, colour, creed, sexuality, age, ability or social background"

Hardly the BNP is it.

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 21:14

Oh Gruntfuttock, really? YABU! Anyway, we're 16-13 now & awaiting an England conversion!

OP posts:
FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:14

Oooooh 16-15 Shock

Get your arses into gear Wales!!!

nannynome · 06/02/2015 21:15

Pants I am going to be grumpy if the second half has us losing now. Meh

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 21:16

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot!

OP posts:
chachaboom · 06/02/2015 21:17

I agree, the booing was naughty ( probably caused by one too many shandies, it's on too late, we are not sophisticated continental types) BUT, there won't be any scraps between supporters, and the English fans won't be bussed out under police escort- like what happens in nonce football. They'll just be in the pubs, enjoying.

crazypenguin · 06/02/2015 21:17

Coming for to carry me home! Grin just one point... twitch

Tinks42 · 06/02/2015 21:17

Fuck that, give me netball any day.
