Booing God Save Our Gracious Queen

I've sung Gwlad, Gwlad, etc in Welsh, (easier to sing yn Gymreig than write, [is that mutation correct?]), but was disgusted to hear the boos for God Save the Queen.
I love Wales & feel really proud to have my Mynediad Welsh certificate, but this hatred of the British national anthem. Really? Is it necessary?

Very true Chacha. I have never felt intimidated at a rugby match. It's a family game still. Smile

TidyDancer · 06/02/2015 21:24

Rugby is nowhere near as hostile as football, I'll grant you that (ironic considering the alcohol disparity). But it still doesn't make the booing and general bad feeling okay. And there is a difference between that and competitiveness.

mynameisbob · 06/02/2015 21:26

I think the main reason for the boos was that the English team delayed coming out of the tunnel, trying to play mind games. Not for God Save the Queen.

chachaboom · 06/02/2015 21:29

It's not ideal I agree, I'm a peace and love person myself but at least the booing and any bad feeling stays in the stadium. On the streets outside rival fans are welcomed and fussed over ( the Scots especially, as they insist in wearing kilts).

Tinks42 · 06/02/2015 21:29

I can't understand why anyone has to ever go to a football match nor rugby one either. Its not something I want to do...

Dont even have to watch it at home... ahhh but I have a remote control that I am in charge of Grin

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 21:30

Ooh, England got possession in the scrum!

Some stupid bloke Grin

nannynome · 06/02/2015 21:35

What are white posts doing on the pitch, were they ever there before? Wink am trying not to get too wound up considering I am pregnant and don't think it would be good for jellybean. Gah we better pull this back. I will never hear the end of it at work otherwise

crazypenguin · 06/02/2015 21:35
Grin
FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:37

Wales have thrown it away in the second half ffs Sad

PolaDeVeboise · 06/02/2015 21:37

My only comment on this is that rugby, in general, is a 'friendly' spectator sport. However, I used to regularly go and watch rugby in The Orange Tree in Richmond and the only time I witnessed any real antagonism was Welsh supporters towards the English. I was quite taken aback. And I'm Scottish. :D

Saltire · 06/02/2015 21:38

We once went to a Scotland V Ireland game at Murrayfield, back in the days when you could take your own alcohol into stadiums.
There was DH and I in our Scotland stuff, sitting in a sea of green with 2 red dots as there was 2 blokes from Wales there, (daffodils, dragons the lot) (and they insisted on shouting Come on Wales every time either team scored) so 2 scots, 2 welsh and about 2 dozen irish - who had 3 crates of guiness with them - which they shared.
There wouldn't be that at football matches

Tinks42 · 06/02/2015 21:38

Dear god, do any of you actually understand the game? or are you so happy that your husband is watching it at home?

Please dont tell me you've made sandwiches for him and his mates Grin

Bumbiscuits · 06/02/2015 21:38

I hate God Save The Queen. I don't believe in any gods and I don't believe in the monarchy.

The volume is always on mute at the anthem so I didn't hear any boos.

Hulababy · 06/02/2015 21:39

The anti Scottish verse has never been part of the official British anthem. It was dropped entirely before it was taken as the official anthem.

It existed beforehand, that's true, when it was sung unofficially - but it is incorrect to say it was ever part of the national anthem.

FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 21:39

Dear god, do any of you actually understand the game?

Yes I do, don't be so fucking patronising Hmm

PolaDeVeboise · 06/02/2015 21:41

ODFO Tinks

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/02/2015 21:42

Dear god, do any of you actually understand the game?

Are you always such a patronising idiot?

DisappointedOne · 06/02/2015 21:42

No Welsh person would accept God save the queen as their anthem. The queen have us that idiot prince Charles for a start, and it's a symbol of hundreds of years of English oppression of the Welsh. And our anthem is about 72,000 times better anyway.

The English pish boys decided to play games before even getting on the pitch. The crowd weren't gonna let them get away with that.

Our anthem was stunning.

nannynome · 06/02/2015 21:43

I am the one watching it, DH doesn't give a flying fart about rugby. What a silly statement.

Tinks42 · 06/02/2015 21:44

I'd love a sport women played that guys supported though...

only saying Grin

If you find that "patronising" so be it.

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 21:45

Do any of you actually understand the game? Erm, yes. Now do be a dear & bring us all a cup of tea!

OP posts:
TidyDancer · 06/02/2015 21:47

Never considered the Welsh anthem as "stunning" - I really don't like it much tbh but there's not really another option so I doubt it would be the subject of debate like the English one. But it's a matter of opinion isn't it?
