Booing God Save Our Gracious Queen

I've sung Gwlad, Gwlad, etc in Welsh, (easier to sing yn Gymreig than write, [is that mutation correct?]), but was disgusted to hear the boos for God Save the Queen.
I love Wales & feel really proud to have my Mynediad Welsh certificate, but this hatred of the British national anthem. Really? Is it necessary?

No the Welsh weren't booing their own National anthem (Hen Wlad Fy Nhadau) they were booing God Save the Queen which is the British anthem

Saltire · 06/02/2015 20:34

I don't boo the National Anthem as it is that - the anthem for GB. I agree with whoever says England need their own anthem though, all the other countries that are part of GB have one

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 20:36

Isn't that what I said in the first place FIGHT? Confused

loving the Welsh number 2 with his face covered in blue .

dirty game Wink

MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 20:37

Oh absolutely acceptable for them to boo then.....

Hmm
Treaclepot · 06/02/2015 20:38

Very rude. I would quite merrily not stand up for our national anthem or sing it but not someone else's.

HappyAgainOneDay · 06/02/2015 20:38

Well, in the Commonwealth Games (was it that?) some years ago, the England national anthem used to be Land of Hope and Glory. I like that because it's so rousing. I suspect that it's been dropped because of the words referring to the Empire. A few word changes here and there would make it a superb national anthem. The current idea is that it should be Jerusalem.

There was a time when everyone had to be silent during the playing of a national anthem, regardless of the country for which it was being played.

MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 20:41

So are welsh no longer British, I seem to have missed that particular referendum, but I expect it would go the same way as the Scottish one.......

I think it's just not cricket

nannynome · 06/02/2015 20:43

Cymru am byth 13-5 Grin I don't think it is very good to boo other national anthems, rugby has always been far better with the sportsmanship. I always loved the fact that I could always wear my jersey in whichever pub in London I went to and not get abuse for it more than a mild ribbing.

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 20:44

I would hope that the Welsh would always be British. As an English personage I am very proud of my 1/8 Welsh ancestry & my ability to charad Cymreig bach!

*Isn't that what I said in the first place FIGHT?

I thought you were under the impression they were booing the Welsh national anthem. My mistake.

I can assure you that there would have been plenty of English supporters in the crowd booing the Welsh anthem (and shouting "fucking sheepshaggers" etc.). Its happened every time I've been to an England/Wales match. You wont have heard it on the coverage as the singing drowned it out.

So are welsh no longer British

Maybe they were all Welsh nationalists Grin

It's not okay to boo any anthem, shows a lack of respect.

Saltire · 06/02/2015 20:47

I suspect that it's been dropped because of the words referring to the Empire

and yet they keep God Save the Queen with its "rebellious Scots to crush" line Grin.

FightOrFlight · 06/02/2015 20:48

Jerusalem would be a lovely anthem for England.

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/02/2015 20:50

TBF most of my family are Scottish and they are rebellious and could do with a decent amount of crushing. Grin They might complain about that line but they see it in the same way as Hadrian's Wall. A back-handed compliment.

MuttonCadet · 06/02/2015 20:50

Yes, welsh nationals are amusing apparently. Confused
I can guarantee we aren't so keen on our English nationalists.

But whatever floats your boat.....nationalism can be such fun Sad

nannynome · 06/02/2015 20:51

My DH has just left to go to the garage as he doesn't watch the rugby and is bored pfft! lol He knew what he was getting into when he married me! I vote for a leek emoticon Grin

IHopeYouStepOnALegoPiece · 06/02/2015 20:52

Just me or is the Ref crap?

And the booing was disgraceful

Btw none of my messages have anything to do with rugby, I've never watched a game, but I'm hurt by the hatred.

FrancesNiadova · 06/02/2015 20:54

But, "sheepshaggers," is yelled at the Yorkshires, the Devonshires & anyone not from a city. Indeed, when I was a student in Liverpool with a broad Northern accent, I was endearingly known as a woolly-back! (Known as in the acquaintance & not the Biblical sense, you understand Blush ) Bliley, this is getting complicated!
