To think that lying in bed with your arm up in the air is weird

Lighthearted: but still annoying.

DP has always done it, sort of just before going to sleep, or if I'm reading something to him in bed: he puts his arm straight up in the air above him/me. He says it's relaxing and he's done it since he was a kid. I say it's mental and annoying and makes me claustrophobic. He then says I am over sensitive and that all women would love their DP to hold an arm in the air above them.

AIBU?

Hee hee! I'm going to try it too!

SomeSortOfDeliciousBiscuit · 04/02/2015 21:35

I honestly thought I was literally the only person in the world to do the arm in the air before sleeping thing.

My brethren (sistren?). I have found you. Let us all lie down and relax.

Caronaim · 04/02/2015 21:36

I've done this occasionally all my life, not for any particular reason, it almost does itself. Somehow I've always equated it with something like horses locking their legs vertical to sleep standing up.

StayGoldPonyBoy · 04/02/2015 21:40

We can't do it. DH and I just put Netflix off to wave our arms about like weirdos. We can't make it so it locks, I have to concentrate to hold it thereHmm I feel left out!

TheFirstOfHerName · 04/02/2015 21:41

DH does this. I thought it was just him... I didn't realise it was a thing.

AnnieEdison · 04/02/2015 22:00

It is definitely a thing but I wonder why?? It is obviously so natural to some people and not at all to others!

Girlwhowearsglasses · 04/02/2015 22:50

Noooooo
You're all barmy
Goes off to lie down with arms down

OMG I've just done it and it feels fabulous. My arm just sort of locked naturally. How the hell have I never discovered this before?

Ifyourawizardwhydouwearglasses · 04/02/2015 23:08

Wow.

I thought I was the only one!!!!

nokidshere · 04/02/2015 23:11

haha we used to do it too when we were younger - swear it helped us sleep better (me and my sisters)

Don't really do it as an adult though - might try it tonight and see lol ;)

TommyandGina · 04/02/2015 23:15

Yup, another arm raiser here - I'm glad I'm not alone in this. Night all.

mindthegap79 · 04/02/2015 23:23

I do this.

But you're right, it's outrageous.

LTB.

Jjuice · 04/02/2015 23:24

Done this forever but thought it was relaxing because I hyper mobile. I also do with my legs. I starfish too and often awake with dead hand.

BlessedAndGr8fulNoInLaws4Xmas · 04/02/2015 23:26

I do this !
But weirder I actually tickle the arm that's up in the air at the same time.
I find it weird and have no idea why I do it.

Nocakeformeplease · 04/02/2015 23:29

My sister and I have done the arm in the air thing since kids. And I saw my 2.5yo DD doing it the other day.

I thought it was just a weird family thingGrin

HotSquashedBun · 04/02/2015 23:32

YABU. I just tried it. There was something quite relaxing about stretching my arm up and feeling the cool air on it.

ChippingInGluggingOn · 04/02/2015 23:39

I do it. With my leg as well.

I expect my Dad did it, I must ask my Mum. My Dad & I both put a hand on the headboard if there is one too.

tinkerbelletigger · 04/02/2015 23:44

I have never ever heard of this!! Is it for real? I'm going to try it Grin I can't believe there's so many of you waving your arms in the air! Why??

LizzieVereker · 04/02/2015 23:52

I do this if I have a migraine, don't know why but it helps.

tinkerbelletigger · 04/02/2015 23:53

I'm definitely trying it then because I get migraines too. How weird!

Petitgrain · 05/02/2015 00:03

Oh my god, I've done this since I was a kid. Haven't done it for a while actually, but yes, it's all about locking the arm and achieving such perfect balance that it's like your arm is hanging in the air, instead of being held up. Sort of thing.

tinkerbelletigger · 05/02/2015 00:06

How have I never heard of this?! I must have led a very sheltered life Grin

Tapirbackrider · 05/02/2015 00:10

Sooo glad to find that I'm not the only one who does this!

Grin
bloomingheather · 05/02/2015 00:45

I do it too! Like Annie and Blessed I tickle my arm with my other hand too. I'm usually pretty unaware of it although obviously not fast asleep - it just happens, usually as I'm falling asleep. I also sleep talk and have night terrors/sleep paralysis sometimes - I sometimes think they must be connected.
I found out recently from my SiL that apparently my brother does it too, which was a bit weird. I wondered if it's maybe connected to being soothed to sleep by touch from our parents as babies. Although lots of people don't do it so maybe not!

FindoGask · 05/02/2015 05:41

I went through a stage of doing this! I didn't even know it was a thing. I have also woken up with my arm above my head.
