To think that lying in bed with your arm up in the air is weird

Lighthearted: but still annoying.

DP has always done it, sort of just before going to sleep, or if I'm reading something to him in bed: he puts his arm straight up in the air above him/me. He says it's relaxing and he's done it since he was a kid. I say it's mental and annoying and makes me claustrophobic. He then says I am over sensitive and that all women would love their DP to hold an arm in the air above them.

AIBU?

Yes.

chocciechip · 04/02/2015 12:59

It IS relaxing. Try it. (I'm amused someone other than me also does it. Grin)

ClariceBeanthatsme · 04/02/2015 12:59

Hmmm is it like a spare arm? You know in bed when you just don't know where to put an arm or a leg so it's spare.

drbonnieblossman · 04/02/2015 13:00

YABU. Its his arm.

If he were holding your arm on the air, fair enough. That's odd.

Smidge001 · 04/02/2015 13:00

I do it too! Feels good, honest

ShatnersBassoon · 04/02/2015 13:02

It makes you claustrophobic? How big's his arm?! Confused

Leave him to it, turn away if it's upsetting you.

annadina · 04/02/2015 13:02

I used to do it lots before pregnancy changed my sleeping positions forever! It's fab, and I'm impressed that at least 3 of us do it. Does he also sleep on his back with arms over his head (like the highland fling)? So comfortable!

LittleBairn · 04/02/2015 13:03

Weird does he not get a sore arm?

LittleBairn · 04/02/2015 13:04

Oh if you mean sleep with your arms resting on a pillow then I'm with your DH I find that relaxing too. I was imagining him lying in bed with his arms raised in the air.

Bifauxnen · 04/02/2015 13:05

I do this. And I remember my gran doing it too, years ago.
It feels right.

KerryMehome · 04/02/2015 13:05

I do this all the time - it feels great. YABU!

chocciechip · 04/02/2015 13:06

annadina - totally with you on the highland fling thing too!

Bifauxnen · 04/02/2015 13:06

You have to be laying on your side, though. Doing it while laying on your back would be weird.

allowme · 04/02/2015 13:06

Ooh I remember doing that it felt nice. I am going to try it later.

CornChips · 04/02/2015 13:08

I'm a highland flinger too.

Laugh at 'spare arm or leg'. Last weekend I had DH and DS in the bed, plus two dogs and a cat. One of my legs was on top of a dog as there was no room for it.

also do the arm thing.

RiverTam · 04/02/2015 13:10

I used to do this quite a lot, he's right, it is relaxing.

Unless he's the size of a brown bear I can't see how this would make you feel claustrophobic.

sneepy · 04/02/2015 13:13

Dd1 did this as a baby, I think it's like twirling your hair or sucking your thumb. Just be glad he doesn't suck his thumb.

ouryve · 04/02/2015 13:14

I sleep like that. I'm less likely to wake up with a stiff neck, if I do.

ouryve · 04/02/2015 13:16

And I do it lying on my back. Hand goes behind my head, when I'm reading, then above my head when I fall asleep.

RibbonJar · 04/02/2015 13:17

YABU. If you get it in just the right position it feels almost weightless.

FinnJuhl · 04/02/2015 13:17

I do the arm thing too! If you've got your own eyes closed, then how can it bother you?

HellKitty · 04/02/2015 13:18

I do it to relax and get to sleep. I did wake up one morning with my arm above my head and I couldn't feel it. Spent a few minutes wondering where it had gone Grin

MMcanny · 04/02/2015 13:20

My DH does this too, though usually in the middle of the night when he's fast asleep. I find it slightly disturbing, especially waiting for him to 'stop' when his arms just drop suddenly onto the bed/me.

CornChips · 04/02/2015 13:20

apparently the highland fling is called a starfish and means you are a good listener. ;)

Hmm, I think everyone else is talking about something different to me. I did mean actually holding my arm up in the air. At a 90° angle to my body while I lie on my side. I thought I'd found validation.
