you're just too funny Acquiredtaste

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 29/01/2015 11:50

Moomin, this is just my problem with feminisim. You say you're not one, or don't really agree with it - suddenly you're a social pariah who hates equality. That's not what I said, or perhaps you missed my final paragraph? Why should they help with feminism, when the name itself screams 'all about women'. It's a mixed message really isn't it, talking about equality, but only from a woman's point of view.

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 11:53

I must imagine adverts that spent 25 secoonds of footballer in boxers and 5 seconds on actual product. Men are as objectified as women.that is why all you ever see in mags/posters is men in boxers/swim trunks. That is why there are thousands of powders/shakes to beef you up. So that men conform to what women find attractive. Feminism excludes men by only focusing on women. While that is the case there will never be equality.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 11:59

notme it HAS to scream "all about women" because if it didn't then it would make NO impact on the world at large...and get this...it IS all about women.

If that makes you uncomfortable you should look deeply at your reasoning. What is it that makes you uncomfortable about women being the centre of attention in a struggle for equality that is ongoing?

the world is not yet at a place where we can safely say "Oh we're all equal now so we can be humanists."

It just isn't.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:01

Aquired as for the complaints about advertisers showing beefy men and protein shakes...do you know how many men work in advertising as opposed to women??

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:01

Suzanne - what exactly do you find so funny? Do you realize that extreme feminists are so aggressive towards men that some people think they should be classed as a terrorist group? That there was aconference of men that were domestically abused. When that conference met it was interrupted by a group of extreme feminists charging in shouting abuse at them. Wanting equality is fine but feminism has turned into a monster that only cares about putting women on top now.

PetulaGordino · 29/01/2015 12:01

"Feminism excludes men by only focusing on women. While that is the case there will never be equality."

Grin
MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:02

here look at that and tell me WOMEN are to blame for the way men are shown on tv!

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:03

Acquired your argument is as valid as calling all Muslims bombers.

They're not. Just as the majority of Feminists are not aggressive extremists.

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:04

Mrs Tawdry- no I am afraid that I dont but I think that for men and women that if there was no demand then they would not advertise so many products in that niche. Men and women have pressure on them to conform to be physically appealing. It is not right that feminists scream they are objectified by men and ignore that they objectify men right back.

itsnotmeitsyou1 · 29/01/2015 12:07

Because to me the 'struggle' is not that of those living in oppressed countries. Or how our lives were 100 years ago when women had to stand up to be counted.

This modern 'I am woman, hear me roar' bull, it's a poor comparison to the fight other female movements have done before us, and are still doing across the world. I do believe in women's rights, I don't understand why that is so difficult for you ladies to understand, but I believe in equality more. I refuse to believe a woman's voice is more important to listen to than a man's, or the other way around.

AnnieLobeseder · 29/01/2015 12:07

Any man who can't get on board with giving up his position of privilege and supporting women in their fight for equality simply because he feels "excluded" by the label we choose to give ourselves is a knobber and his feelings are less than irrelevant to me. Any decent human being would want the world to be fair. If a label makes you care less about equality, you're not a nice person.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:08

No they don't objectify men. MEN in advertising do that because it's all about money....as I said the industry is overwhelmingly run by MEN not women. Accept that you are wrong Acquired

Catzeyess · 29/01/2015 12:08

I am totally for equality and equal pay etc etc and in fact actively involved in fighting for women in my particular field.

However some of the frothy comments on this thread make me sad.

What is it that makes men more violent than women? What turns these blokes into 'twats' Unless you believed men are genetically programmed to be more violent than women or come out of the womb being 'twats' there is something in society failing men too. Surely a non equal society fails the men and the women. Just like a family dynamic with a scapegoat and a golden child fails both children. Just because men have more 'privilege' in society does not make them any less victims to a patriarchal society.

Fighting for equality needs to come from both men and women working together.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:10

Notme a woman's voice is more important than a man's when it comes to the experience of being a woman and of being oppressed. A man cannot speak with as much experience.

If you are a man I accept your fear and if you are a woman I accept your hesitation. But both need to be addressed by you for the good of women and girls everywhere.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:11

Cat the Patriarchy has ensured that men are more violent. That is the "something in society" which has failed them as well as women.

shaska · 29/01/2015 12:12

It's not the same, but this argument, the 'what about MEN we get discriminated against TOO' thing, reminds me, always, of this youtube video (not porn or spam I promise).

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:13

That is not what I am saying which iswhy i qualified by saying extreme feminists. I think a lot of feminists are very reasonable. Yes some men are violent same as some women are violent. Gender (or feminism/equalism etc) is not a indicator of violence or abusiveness. That is a intresting article. Do you know why the numbers fell? Is it redundancy, firing or choice of the women? If it was choice then was it actual choice or felt force d out so left the job 'choice'?

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:16

Shaska right.

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:19

Mrs tawdry i fully accept that i may be (most likely am) wrong in this regard and probably others but i do think that feminism is highly misunderstood (including by me) because of the actions of the extreme feminists. I also think that equality works both ways and for us to achieve equality we need to start focusing on both genders at the same time.

PetulaGordino · 29/01/2015 12:19

what does "extreme" mean in the context of feminism? whatever your definition, i would wager there are far more violent men than there are "extreme" feminists and one's chances of encountering the former is far more likely and risky in terms of outcome

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:20

Acquired you're rambling and mixing things up and not really saying anything new.

You should watch Shastas video. And as Louis CK says "I've got a lot going for me...I'm white and I'm a man...this shit is GOOD...you can't even hurt my feelings!"

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:21

I 100% tried to strike out That i am probably wrong. Seriously ignore it.

MrsTawdry · 29/01/2015 12:24

Petula I suppose extreme in Feminism is what my Uncles friend's are...they are a couple...a gay couple...two females. They recently adopted a child,...a little girl and they've decided that she is not having any men in her life. They want to protect her and encourage her to mix with no men at all.

That's extreme. But we don't think of them. We must not. It's similar to focusing on terrorists when we speak of Muslims.

AcquiredTaste · 29/01/2015 12:24

I do tend to ramble. I have a lot of thoights in my head and they normally come out wrong and mixed up. I shall just lurk on this thread, think my thoughts in my head -and try to learn something.-
