Ds likes playing games on the xbox and often plays online with others. He is very into minecraft which I don't mind as it's age appropriate for him as he is twelve. He is now sulking that it's not fair because the rest of his friends from school are either playing Call of Duty, Grand theft Auto and Battlefield. And he is left out from the group players online. Most of his minecraft friends are from year 5/6.
He knows that I disagree with the first two games totally inappropriate for his age as they are 18. However I looked into the content on a demo of Battlefield which is a 16 rating. It seems to be soldiers running around a field firing at each other in the army. maybe I should let him grow up a bit more and let him play with his mates on Battlefield! Apparently I've ruined his life!! Think he is entering the Kevin and Perry stage

ChippingInLovesChristmasLights no of course I'm not in an intimate relationship with them, but they and their girlfriends are often round and my house and they seem perfectly sweet and chivalrous to me.

nooka · 10/01/2015 02:23

yes, it says I love and respect him, and he me. Do you really see that as a problem? Bearing in mind that we are in our 40s and with one notable exception haven't yet fallen out about anything worth noting. Generally speaking in a relationship you can't (or shouldn't) just do 'what you want' regardless as to whether you have free will or not (and in any case I think that's a bit irrelevant).

Of course that doesn't mean you have the right to regularly kick up a stink about stuff that doesn't matter, or at least your partner has an equal right to complain, or at an extreme leave.

dh and I played games together when we met as teenagers so we had plenty of opportunity to talk about preferences before we got very seriously involved with each other. I don't think that either of our views have changed very much.

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 10/01/2015 02:46

OP tell him it's against the law to play 18+ games, whilst he's under age and that is final.

RandomNPC · 10/01/2015 02:49

Steamtrains, I want to marry you for your username alone!

SteamTrainsRealAleandOpenFires · 10/01/2015 03:37

TY Random for the offer of marriage, but I'm already "spoken for" Sorry to disappoint you.

GraysAnalogy · 10/01/2015 04:38

Battlefield? Yes. GTA? Don't think that's a good game for anyone

Thing is though people seem to be more bothered about ages of games and don't give a shite about film ratings.

GraysAnalogy · 10/01/2015 04:44

It still shocks me though how much vitriol video gamers get. You wouldn't be arsed if your child sat playing Operation for over an hour but God forbid they want a computer game that has a story line, takes skill, developes critical thinking... (Can I just add this is aimed at those who see computer games in general as some taboo)

GraysAnalogy · 10/01/2015 04:55

Is there a link tho 'Walmart in America banning GTA' by the way?

DropYourSword · 10/01/2015 05:33

Not sure Gray, but I could link one for it being banned in Australia's Target, which I think is what the OP might have been referring to. I just didn't because TheHermitCrab dictated to me: DropYourSword we are not talking about banning games, petitions against games or how much people should know about a game. Even though it was actually the OP that mentioned it being banned in a store.

GraysAnalogy · 10/01/2015 05:45

Ive seen the Australian one, however im highly doubtful of the nation wide US Walmart ban.

DropYourSword · 10/01/2015 06:35

If it was removed from shelves I wouldn't imagine it would be nationwide. I reckon probably only statewide. If it did even happen. A 3 second google search shows I can buy it on the online Walmart store for $59.99 plus free shipping.

JCDenton · 10/01/2015 12:12

Sounds to me like the OP meant Target in Australia, I think the only time Walmart dropped anything was during the Hot Coffee GTA scandal, which only seemed to cause a drama in America.

Violent story about a gangbanger in non-LA, with hundreds of people killed? Fine
Consensual sex? Game withdrawn from shelves, Hilary Clinton personally involved.

Thank you for the suggestions on the last page. Dc2 is skipping off into town to the Game Shop with his Christmas money in one hand and the list with Need For Speed at the top in the other!

It's an independent shop too and the man in charge is very knowledgeable so I'm confident that dc2 will come home a very happy camper Grin

teenagetantrums · 18/01/2015 16:23

To be honest at 12 my son was playing 18 games. My ex let him, his friends were all playing them so he was just going to their houses to play. I wasn't overly bothered, in the grand scheme of things was just like us watching 18 films when we were that age. Doesn't seem to have done him any harm, he is 20 and at uni. Once they get to high school I think you have to just let some things go.
